When I moved down here in 1989 the bloke who lived next door but one had just come home from hospital, permanently paralysed from the neck down after having a severe reaction to a flu jab. Although it was a freak event, that has been enough to stop me from having one. I appreciate that medicine etc will have progressed in those years, but to reinforce the point, one of the younger lads at work went home a couple of years back and told his mum who was a nurse that they were offering flu-jabs at work, she told him not to go near it
Altough I don't know of any, I'm sure there are some who have died because they didn't have the jab. HTH confused:

Serious <I get one each year. Firstly I am in an 'at risk' group and secondly I work (and in the past) travelled with the general unwashed.
I have had flu, once, in the past. Delirious (sp) for 2 days and missed Christmas, prolly 1984. Not sure which strain was around then but I would never want to go through that again. I was much healthier but not necessarily fitter then either. How it would have effected me if I had been coping with any other condition I can only imagine.
I sometimes notice feeling slightly sniffly.>
However, I have never had manflu. ;D

I'm an "at risk" as well but I don't normally bother to get the jab. I had one last year but only because I happened to be seeing the doctor and he did it there and then. Don't recollect ever having "real" flu, just the occasional cold.

To answer the question as to why you should suddenly get the invitation ~ I'd guess it's because you have a new doctor (after all you have moved) and it may be local practice to offer the Flu Jab to anyone who "qualifies" either by age, known medical conditions or just because they have some spare.
Are they any good? I have had flu in the past (several times over 65 years) and frankly would not want it again. Also I am in the "at risk" group because of heart. Woodstock has also had flu (yeah all right make the jokes if you must) in the past and like me is in an "at risk" group, in her case asthma. Soooooo we trot along every October/November and have the jab. Only side effect either of us ever get is a bit of a sore arm and that is not every year. Sometimes no effects at all.
Minimus qualifies (asthmatic) but cannot have the jab as he is egg allergic and the active bit of the vaccine is/used to be "grown" on egg whites. Previously his consultant has said No! to him having the jab unless he goes into hospital for a couple of days to be vaccinated and "observed". This year the local surgery has told us that they have a new vaccine that is not prepared this way and "should" be safe for him but we took the view that we'd wait and see the reports on this "new" vaccine before committing. His consultant agreed with us that we should leave it a year or two to see what other reactions are reported worldwide.
The good news is that apparently there is an even newer vaccine under test that may (or so the makers claim) offer life long protection against all strains of flu from a single jab. If that proves to be the case I will certainly have one.

Me: So what shall we do then?
Nurse: Well you don't really qualify for the jab

Me: Any side effects?
Nurse: Oh yes. Your arm may swell up, you may get a temperature and you may feel ill for 48 hours.
Me: A bit like flue then!
Nurse changes subject: Are you still smoking?
Me: Yes, but what has that got to do with it?
Nurse: I Have to ask you
Me: Why?
Nurse: Um, it's bad for you
Me: I know. Do you smoke?
Nurse: Yes
We stare at each other
Nurse: DId they give you an alcohol questionnaire?
Me: No, but I wouldn't have filled it in, or I might have lied.
Nurse: DO you want a booklet about healthy eating?
Me: Thanks, but no
Nurse: OK then off you go

Had one for the first time this year because I am in the 'at risk' group. I happened to be visiting the GP and he did it there and then. No side effects.
