Title: The All New Problems With The VP Server Thread
Post by: Barman on February 19, 2012, 07:12:11 PM
I see that there have been some performance issues while Snoopy has been in charge I have been away like...  rubschin:

Can you please use this thread as a 'log' of any problems that you experience...?

Just note the date, time and what happened (or did not happen).

Thanks!

That's very thoughtful.

1: I couldn't find my wallet between about 10:30 and 11:45 this morning. Found it behind a sofa cushion.
2: I found the quad had a puncture at about 14:30. Not fixed yet.

BM! Really! You didn't expect sense did you?

If it helps most outages, slow downs etc are recorded with date and time on the VP secret room on Faceache.

Hello,

A staff member has replied to your question:

Hi,

Please accept our apologies but the maintenance shouldn't have caused the issues that it did, hence the reason you weren't made aware of it.

The work carried out on the server last night was to resolve the problems the server has had over the past few months, so hopefully that will be the last of the problems you have been having.

Thanks

Hi
If it's an issue specific to posting, it sounds like it may be related to the database.  I've checked the database here and it appears to be functioning correctly.  Is there a test log in account we can use to test posting at this end please?

Thanks.

Hello,

Hi
The registration response opened up a new ticket, I've merged them now.  I've also done a test post and ran a few tests here and it seems a bit inconsistent (eg. phpmyadmin works great, but some of the internal tools are taking a while to work).  I will pass the details to our systems team for further investigation.

Thanks.

Hello,

A staff member has replied to your question:

Hi,

I've been reading over the history of this support ticket to get a full grip on the issues you have been facing. Further work was carried out on the host platform overnight last night and I've not experienced any slowdown on navigating the site and making a test post since that maintenance (all pages are loading within 1s and submitting a post goes through equally as quick).

Can you confirm if the issues are currently present with the site or if there is currently any improvement?

Kind Regards,

Hello,

A staff member has replied to your question:

Hi,
your issues are stemming from the nature of your website and the hosting. Your website is nearly entirely database driven so every time someone loads a page/makes a comment etc they require a database connection. As you are on shared hosting your total database connections are limited to 18 at a time, this means when your site is busy users have to wait for a free connection to be able to generate the page/ load the comment or whatever they are trying to do. Looking over the logs it seems your site can have anything from 40-400 users on it at the same time, if this level of use is sustained I would need to recommend migrationg your hosting to a virtual or dedicated platform. Hope this helps.

Hi
Would it be possible to supply a few example dates/times of when the site has been performing poorly?

It's worth also checking the support pages for the software you are running.  I've checked here it looks like there are some caching options available, this should reduce the number of requests to the database and improve the performance of the site.  There is likely to be more information available on the simplemachines.org site, but a quick look gave me this -

http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=228991.0 (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=228991.0)

I'll have to get a plan together like.....  rubschin:

$2.95 a month = c 27 Euros a year.

I'd speak to them and see how long that offer rate applies and how long a contract they want.
Also I'd check how much longer the current hosting contract has to run and what, if any, rebate they would give if we shifted hosting services before it expires. The offer prices seem to be time limited so you'll need to move quickly.
TBH they couldn't be much worse than the current hosts.

Most of it lives on a database...

We take a backup (or three) of the database, install the site software on the new host, configure the new database, upload the backup and bish-bosh it is done!

Will take up to 48 hours for all the DNS servers around the world to update so we might be off-line for a couple of days....

Hello,

A staff member has replied to your question:

Hi,

It appears today one of our customers has been rather abusing the database server. this has slowed things down not only for yourself but a few other customers. Please accept our apologies for the repeated disruption to your site. Due to the nature of shared hosting it's possible that this sort of thing can happen from time to time.

The only way to prevent this is to try and designate dedicated resources to the site. This isn't possible on shared hosting by it's very nature and as such virtual or dedicated hosting is the next step up. Our virtual servers start at a competitive rate that is comparable to what you are paying for this shared hosting currently, however require someone that has technical expertise to see to their day to day running.

To obtain and analyze the logs you seek would take a lot of time and isn't something that's necessary at this point.

Kind Regards,

I sent them this reply first thing...

Quote from: Barman
This is one of your standard answers - I know this because I have seen it before....

So you are now agreeing that it is not our increased bandwidth that is causing the problem but somebody else abusing theirs?

Yet WE have to be punished by spending more money with you???

As I pointed out to John Coyne yesterday, we already spend £80 per year for hosting plus another £39.36 for the SQL database plus another £14.27 for extra mySQL storage and something else for a backup fee...

When we signed up with you it wasn't made clear that to actually USE the site we would have to upgrade to a dedicated server!

So no, either sort out the client that IS abusing your services and return our performance to the (acceptable) levels of a few weeks ago or arrange to refund our payments from the end of March - I'll move the site elsewhere.

Thanks in advance.

No response yet tho....  noooo:

A staff member has replied to your question:

Hi,
we are dealing with the individual that was abusing the system, however as my colleague states this could re-occur with another customer and due to the nature of the shared hosting we cannot prevent it until after it has happened, he was merely offering you a solution which gives you full control with similar costing to what you are currently paying (£120+vat for a linux vServer).

[serious]
Just a thought from the layman, couldn't these 40-400 users be the Amazon advert thingys that keep changing what's on offer at the bottom of the page?

If they keep reading all the posts to see what is being talked about and match up the adverts to the posts, wouldn't that overload it in the same way?[/serious]

A good point well made!

I guess it could be an issue but we've been running the Amazong thing for some time now...

The reasons they've given so far for the problems are: -

1) Site maintenance that they were carrying out
2) Too many users
3) Another user on our shared server who is using too much bandwidth.

I personally think that is all bollox - standard replies to get rid of me (no chance   eveilgrin:) or get us to upgrade to a faster (and more expensive) dedicated server...

I'll switch the ads off and see if it makes a noticeable difference tho....

Probably fibs as you say, but when the Amazoon thing first went on, I'm sure it didn't show a different set of offers every time you open a page like it does now.

My colleagues are dealing with the customer which is causing the issues.  It isn't a case that you and other customers affected are being punished by having to purchase a more expensive service, my colleague was simply advising a system which is more robust.

I would advise assessing the performance of the site once we have dealt with the individual who is causing the problems, if you still feel that cancelling the service is the best is course action we can carry that out.

Thanks.
