They will also be able to explain the laws about who may and who may not have such and where/how a legally owned gun may be used..... Tho' personally I would have said NO!

No, No, NO

Why?

Lead to the dark side, it will

He is in the Army Cadet Corps already. Residential at Catterick coming up

Then leave it to them...
-
Just where is he going to use it?
First sight, by neighbours or passers by, of the boy carrying such in the tiny garden adjoining Nick Towers and he'll have armed police crawling all over him.
Don't be misled by the bit of orange plastic on the "business end" ... a touch of Airfix paint will soon cover that up and it will look "real".
Like Pirate says ~ leave it to real weapons properly supervised by the Army Cadet Corps

Nick, to be pragmatic, it doesn't matter how 'legal' the thing is, if some interfering old busybody sees someone with what THEY think is a 'gun' - they'll probably do a 999 about it.
Next thing you know there'll be a couple of ARVs outside with lots of Old Bill dressed like paramilitary troops complete with their H&K semi-automatics. All pointed in the Boy's direction.
Do you REALLY want that to happen? Have a little reflect first.

As many of you have commented though those days that you remember are very different to the society that children / young adults are growing up in today.
I appreciate The Boy may want one ( as does his dad by all accounts lol: ) but one of the other lessons lost today is that you can't always get what you want ( you remember that song eh Nick ;) )

I use that line a lot when shopping with him, always adding "as the Rolling Stones so wisely teach us"

Totally agree! They've totally lost the plot here - for example, I daren't even carry a good old fashioned penknife these days! And as for the things I used to carry when scouting (you know, ferkin great things with gadgets for getting boy scouts out of girl guides or summat, you know, pointy bit) well one of those would probably see me in Strangeways for a 10 stretch or more!
