Title: These fibre optic providers
Post by: GROWLER on February 03, 2013, 09:56:50 AM
Am I right in saying there's just the three of them?
BT Infinity, Virgin and Sky?

Just been on another site what I frequent, and ther's much discussion as to which one scores better over the others.

Conclusion?
There doesn't seem to be one tbh.
All receiving loads of praise and critisism, albeit the praise wins generally speaking.

April is fast approaching and I want to make the right decision when I come to change IP away from this poxy ao hell contract end.
Will be requiring a good built in blower deal and will even consider selected tv channels of interest too.

Well I know Virgin are most certainly, 'cus i keep getting big slaes letters off them every month telling me so!
Virgin do seem to edge it over Sky from what i can gather, both on price and product. rubschin:

Know very little about BT Infinity.

Am I right in thinking that I haven't really  got to save anything onto discs and sticks and things, 'cus most of that sort of stuff is just on the 'puter and not on the broadband side of things?

It's all causing much confuzzlement in me Anna L og tuned 'ed, and this has been the main reason for putting it all off for so long (12 years)

Apparently I can even keep me existing email addy too, which is a great relief. cloud9:

Your PC will work the same (but faster) and everything else will remain...

Spare a though for those bereft of fibre optic, give generously to ByteFam.  This is the plain Engish version of the reply all those providers give the likes of me:

"Piss off you country bumpkin, wet string links for you losers and no hope of it getting wetter"

evil: evil: evil:    [/bitter, twisted and jealous mode]

In theory yes, in practice you can never do too many backups esp if they ask to load some of their software on your puter.

And if your email address has your current providers name anywhere in it then life can get more difficult once you ditch them and at some point will likely be cut off.  Hotmail, Yahoomail and Gmail are very very transferable.

100 MONSTER bites speed, rising to 120 soon too apparently. confused:

I presume that's fairly quick, seeing as this aoHELL one is only UP to 25 or 30 or summat, but in reality, about 6.

Going to have the Discovery channel on the telly too, so that'll be lots and lots of Bear and out in the wilderness's tv for me then. cloud9:

If you click on either mine or BM's speed test you'll be able to do your own test on your own 'puter and connection.
Download is the speed that you use to compare what your provider says you get and the actuality.
Upload is always way slower
Ping is speed of response from your provider.
Generally the speed of the PING is considered important but only for gamers etc.
I can usually find download speed of around 15 if the boys and Woodstock aren't soaking up bandwidth .... which is what they are doing this afternoon. One is watching fillums on YouTube, One is doing homework research and Woodstock is preparing lessons for next week and "stealing" ideas from the www.

Tivio box, yes, plus  inclusive calls all week except to non Virgin mobbies

Normal cost after 12 months for the package I've signed up to is horrendous though. eeek:
Includes Sky movies which I'm not really that arsed about tbh, but it does include ESPN too for footie. cloud9:

Getting nagged by the Growlers Jnr. united to do just that. evil:

Nowt wrong with the existing one though. Banghead

This is the problem with the faddy 'must have, must have NOW' society of today though.
Far too much 'easy come, easy go' for my liking. ::)

Is this HD that you speak of really going to be that much of a life changing experience I ask myself?

Probably not, in fact it's probably just a load of owld cobblers, in'it? ::)

FWIW, I think it is worth the price to 'upgrade' - however, that's a decision only you can make.

I do draw the line at 3D though - I'd rather wait for 'holographic' TV.

Check it out for sports with a mate who's got one and you'll see what I mean.

Sky charge extra tenner for HD access, Virgin may be similar

It is worth it.  I was agin it but Mrs K insisted for her programmes but once you've seen footie etc on it you won't want to go back

Don't do what me bruvva did though.  Buy HD TV, pay Sky for HD and then use a SCART to connect the two  ::)   Amazon do cheap HDMI leads, work a treat

Just 2 weeks to go! Party001:

Had me first taste of the Discovery channel while I was away.

Mike Brewer rebuilding the 'woody' was most interesting, as were several other shows, albeit most are from yankland. ::)

You will love it Growler but I think you'll find Discovery Channel is great for a few days and then you bore of it.  They have loads and loads of badly narrated repeats

Showing right now on Discovery's multi channels via Sky

Mythbusters (what Snopes does better?  This escipode is about can you run and jum from rope bridges, and can hail storms sink boats - who cares?)

Pagans (all airy fair magical crap - no smut)

Desert car kings (all about restoring a 1964 Plymouth Barracida - I don't care, we have the Mini thread and that's about a car type I have driven, repaire and cursed)

Weird Connections (about Human Sniffer dogs - iteresting for 5 minures)

Another one this Sunday i think, through some disgusting jungle in S.America iirc. eeek:

Alaska features quite often too wiv Bears and things. cloud9:

I don't have access any more...

I used to like Mythbusters and Aircrash Investigations...

But as you say, many repeats and I found the frequent adverts and 'goldfish' style reminders of what had happened five minutes earlier most annoying...

I eventually dumped my mahoosive dish, cancelled the Sky subscription and don't miss it a bit...

Anything I want to watch I can download - always with the adverts conveniently edited out....

So are you saying we will see you less and less because you find watching a repeat of some twat living on a desert island (by choice FFS) better than the wittery repartee (at your expense sometimes) here

We will be bereft just like wot we were last week  cry:

Growler it seems Virgin also show Liverpool FC TV

I have never watched it but I have seen MUTV on their various free sampling weekends and that was utter shite so I expect FCTV will be same.  The fare consists of old has been sitting around with some carefully placed B class totty du jour discussing matches they are not allowed to show.

Even the manager's press conference uncut was so dull I nearly nicked Mrs K's knitting for some excitement

Not surprised you gave up Sky.  The sports stuff is excellent but not everyone's  tea:.   My virtual axe murderer (aka Mrs K) loves all the murder based fiction but most of that eventually gets to Freeview

It's ONLY a repeat IF you've seen it before, which I clearly haven't.

Well I found it interesting, and most enthralling information contained within for when I finally draw a line under the exsistance i currently endure, both here at G Towers and in the wider werld in general.
No cnut ever..well rarely, and only normally when pissed as a rat..... agrees with my (admitedly) somewhat eccentric views, opinions and rantings, so when I've finally had enough, the island will call me to enable me to rant to my 'earts content, in the full knowledge that no bastard on earth will disagree or barrack me. cloud9:

What can possibly go wrong i ask meself?  Shrugs:

With my track record with all things digi, plenty i reckon. scared2:

Now, some serious questions.
Will these Virgin goons install their intermong connection for me, and will they delete this aoHELL shite, or will they just lob a load of discs at me and say, "there you go chief" ? Shrugs:

Will I retain my email addy, or will I have to see if GROWLER @Virgin.com is available?
What will happen to all my emails?

So many questions with plenty of suprises await I fear. scared2:

Shouldn't actually affect me piccies and other stuff saved on the 'puter, as opposed to aoHELL stuff, should it?

What will happen to all my emails? If your email is Growler@aol.com then it will have to change so save all your contacts in an address book and notify them of the change. If you have a net based email such as Growler@ yahoo.com then you'll be fine.

So many questions with plenty of suprises await I fear. scared2: Your biggest surprise is likely to be the speed and efficiency of Virgin connection

Shouldn't actually affect me piccies and other stuff saved on the 'puter, as opposed to aoHELL stuff, should it? Piccies saved on your 'puter should not be be a problem but why not open a Free Picasa Account with Google and save all your piccies there and save on memory in your PC?

Tell you what I'm missing about aoHELL, (not much granted) and that's the homepage wot had the facility to list your favourites and a really good clear and concise section across the top with the tool bar that you could place your most favourestest favourite sites with a symbol of your choice  to click on for instant access.

Firefox just seems to have a drop down 'bookmark' thing that's not as clear and easy to use.

The Virgin welcome page is shite too and don't even bother using it now.

Just an observation

Google do a iGoogle page that you set as your home page and lets you customise with all you favourite bookmarks and stuff on it but BAD NEWS is they say this will be discontinued soon.

However Yahoo do a My Yahoo page that they said they were discontinuing but then seem to have changed their mnd.

Worth looking at

I know everybody crititises aoHELL, and rightly so in many respects, but their home/welcome page for members is actually very good and informative with bags of facilties links and info.
I was in the misguided belief that competitors sites were probably all very similar, but no, not the case at all. eeek:

Virgin's is extremely poor. which did actually suprise me tbh.

I presume all these other IP's are assuming their customers will be using Firefox and the like, and therfore don't make an effort, whereas aoHELL do actually make their site attractive enough to use for internet useage, which is exactly what I did in the main for 10 years.

Looks quite attractive with informative link bar, but where do you place your favourites? Couldn't find that facilty, and it is actually quite important imo, especially when you've been so used to it in the past.

There's a Google bookmarks thingy you can add and then you can add them to that or even import them

Try the My Yahoo too  http://uk.my.yahoo.com/ (http://uk.my.yahoo.com/)    As it seems that will last beyond October

iGoogle to be retired Nov 1st (http://support.google.com/websearch/answer/2664197?hl=en&hlrm=iw)

My Yahoo won't (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Yahoo!)
