We have moved from AOL to Primus (?).
New router etc all set up. Two out of three laptops have connected through wifi without issues, as has my phone, but the third laptop refuses.
It connects to the router without issue, but seems to think the router has no route to the internet, which it clearly does.
I've spent a couple of days looking at options to no avail.
Anyone got a clue?
Tel?
Grateful for any thoughts from anyone.
Laptop is probably 6 years old running Vista. It worked fine with AOL.

It has to be anti-virus or firewall software...
Disable both and see if that fixes it....

Common prob is where device has a fixed IP address and wrong gateway, so device becomes part of the network but does not know where the internet is.
You need to check that the laptop is seeing the router as gateway.
So, Start, Run, CMD to bring up a DOS box. Type ipconfig and you will get the address of the laptop, sub-net mask and gateway - check that gateway is the same on all devices.

Tel
This laptop (working fine):
IPv4 Address: 192.168.1.36
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.160.1.1
Other laptop (not connecting) is the same other than the first one is 192.168.1.35. Subnet mask and Gateway are identical.
Next step?
Thanks

I have tried Barman - although I can't seem to get AVG to talk to me at the moment. Switched off Windows Forewall to no avail.
Perhaps I need to update AVG - I'll downloa ... Oh!

Does it connect if you take said laptop to one of those free WiFi places?
I'd mention Starbucks but I fear that'd get me expelled

Yes - has been fine with most wifi connections. Only had this problem once before in a hotel where both our laptops (both Vista at the time) could see the router with no problems but couldn't get any further.
Have used wifi from hotspots and hotels/rental properties on numerous occasions without issue.

[rambling mode] I'm thinking you've got a cheap and nasty modem/router from your new ISP that can't arbitrate between more than 2 wireless connections. Like the one those sods from el cheapo ISP gave me. But then you shouldn't be able to see the modem/router and it shouldn't have been able to give it that IP address. [/rambling mode]
What happens if you connect said rejected laptop via an ethernet cable to router?

What wireless mode is the router set to - BGN, etc.?
-
Um - how would I know what mode the router is set to? rubschin:
I just got it out the box, plugged it in and followed the very limited instructions.
-
Hate to say this but sounds like they were instructions for a limited modem
Subject to the real wisdom of tel I say get BT, it just works - well obviously not on some mediterranean island

Find the IP address of the router - it will be 192.168.something.something
Type that into the address bar on your browser and you should have access to the router....

Can't you just phone the helpline of the new provider and get them to sort it......or have I missed something?
-
Tried a couple of days ago and gave up after 15 minutes on hold.
I think it's an issue with the laptop rather than the provider.

They normally have some 'expert' who can talk you through the whole problem though. Give it a try. Thumbs:

Sure? If it works fine on ethernet and on wireless to other providers there is something awry with that modem and it's wirelessability. What happens if you try and see which laptops can see each other over the home wireless network?
Also can you reset the modem - so that it forgets all the connections it has made to the other laptops and then try rebuilding it's list by powering up the blanked out laptop first. That'd show if it's a 3 is a crowd issue
And there's also the trick of forcing a new IP address for the laptop. Open a command prompt and enter ipconfig/release and then ipconfig/renew.
Or even better wait for wisdom of tel

Banghead Can't turn the wifi thingy on the laptop on now. Banghead
The button is not functioning and I cannot find another way to turn it on.
I managed to uninstall AVG and can turn off Windows Firewall, but now cannot test BM's suggestion.

Google <your laptop make> and wifi problem. You are rarely alone in these problems. Sounds like a BIOS setting is setting your WiFi to off

You also rarely get an answer to your problem either, still it's nice to know you're not alone. confused:

Have a look to see if it is disabled in Device Manager

Also check the craptop for wifi on/off switches which you may have moved while fiddling round with ethernet cables.
Also, some craptops (like my Tosh) have button combinatios to turn off wifi in the soft side - Ctrl-F4 I seem to recall. The two together (soft and hard switches) give you three to one against it working - try all combinations.
Good luck!
