Title: The all new horsey betting shop
Post by: GROWLER on February 22, 2013, 12:27:53 PM
Decided I'd start up a well and PROPER competition instead of all this airy fairy stuff, with overly complicated roolz that no one apart from the OP actually understands Banghead.

Now I don't really understand betting and all the technical jargon that oes with it, but I'll join in with a bit of guidance from any of you's lot that do.

We'll start out with a 'bank' of say  rubschin: 100snotters each, and then you can place you imaginary bet on here before the race, simples!

Post the result up after, and we'll see who makes the most profit, only I'll problee need a bit of help, 'cus I don't even understand the 'odds' tbqh....unless they're ded simple ones like, like 2/1 etc.

Wotchya!

I'm going for the tasty lickle number 'Barenger' at Sandown, 1:45 cloud9:

Seems to be 5/2 at the mo like, so if I place a tenner on it that'll give me  £4 if it wins...i think? confused:

What are the roolz, like?

Just do a imaginary bet of your own choice from todays meetings (racing post iis good), and then just go back in there later to see if it wun like. Werk yer winnings out   if you can  confused:, and post them on 'ere like!
You can do an e/w bet to cover yu arse even if you want, but it starts getting complicated then I think?

You've got to post yer selection on here BEFORE the race though, or it doesn't count like. noooo:

No you turnip headed goon. It's just like a betting shop in here, but without having to stand there with fat sweaty bearded council teneants,  spending their DSS handouts looking at screens and newspapers and stuff.

5/2 .....divide the first number by the second number ...... giving you 2 & 1/2 to one.

A tenner at 2 1/2 to 1 gives you 25 snotters, plus you get your stake back.   Thumbs:

Not stupid game but rules is going to be a bit complecated like wot I said

I suggest 3 new rules

- no clever dick bets like Yankees, coomulators and each way
- odds are as posted in BBC results
- no dog or cow racing etc

A wager on four selections and consisting of 11 separate bets: 6 doubles, 4 trebles and a fourfold accumulator. A minimum two selections must win to gain a return.

But then thinking back over years of anguish over Growler's VAT returns it was always a forlorn hope anyway.   sadsmiley30:

Ah the joys of seeing the family out of the door and idling over the racing pages, trying to do the crossword and drinking a fresh pot of tea in perfect peace.  cloud9:

 lol: Now that's a thought.

At our previous residence there was a "Fly" dog track close by. "Known as a "Fly" Track as it was outside of the normal Greyhound racing circuit.
Anywhoo they used to hold Greyhound and Whippet racing evenings there and on one occasion they tried Afghan Hound racing. Now that was a joy to watch as Afghans can run as fast but much further than Greyhounds. The problem is that the Afghan cannot be trained to race and they would stop for a p*ss halfway through a race, some would be crafty and lie in wait for the hare to come round from behind them and in one race one tried to mount another.
Hilarious and very boozy evening.

I've used 1/4 odds but even so you missed the £5 return of the stake which would make the pot £140.75.

You should know as you are a betting chap that non handicap races only give you 1/5th of the odds.

To make it easy for the rest on here:

Pot was 138.75 less 10.00 (five quid each way) = pot now 128.75
Your horse did not win....so the first fiver is down the pan.
It came 2nd....so the last fiver goes on it at 1/5th of the odds (Starting Price 7/1 divided by 5 = 1.4/1)
multiply 1.4 x 5 =7 + the fiver back = 12

I forgot the stake and UM forgot the odds breakdown.... pot now 140.75.  Thumbs:

I make it...
If you took the prices at time of placing the bet
Cappa Bleu 2nd at 12/1 £5 e/w (£10) you get back £20
Tea For Three 3rd at 10/1 £5 e/w (£10) you get back £17.50
Rare Bob 5th at 18/1 £5 e/w (£10) you get back £27.50
So, you placed £40, you walked out with £65 = £25 profit on the day

However, if you took starting prices, the only one that differed was Rare Bob which was 16/1 instead of 18/1. If that was the case, your profit for the day would have been £62.50, not £65.00

Baldy will be able to confirm whether my calculations are right or not

I'm not sure if your pot was £90 before these bets were placed, or after they were placed  confused:

Uncle has it right in terms of Bookies rules in Betting Shops but I have a feeling that On-line betting has changed the rules.

I have looked the the Bet Fred Rules but they do not make it clear.

Quote
3. Each-way Betting

Bets are settled to win unless ‘each-way’ is selected. An each-way bet is a bet of twice the selected unit stake. It contains one bet of unit stake on the selection to ‘win’ and one bet of unit stake on the selection to ‘place’ according to the terms advertised for the event.
In general, for UK horse and greyhound racing only, the ‘place’ part of each-way bets will be settled as per the following ‘place’ terms:
Handicaps – 16 or more runners one quarter the odds – first four places
Handicaps – 12-15 runners one quarter the odds – first three places
All other non-handicap races of 8 or more runners one fifth the odds – first three places
Races of 5, 6 or 7 runners – one quarter the odds – first two places
Less than 5 runners – the place money is invested to win
In all races the number of runners shall be the number of runners coming under starter's orders. Bets will not be accepted where the place stake exceeds the win stake.
Each-way doubles, trebles and accumulators will be settled ‘win to win’ and ‘place to place’ in accordance with the above.
Title: Re: The all new horsey betting shop
Post by: Snoopy on April 07, 2013, 08:47:38 AM
On another part of their site they say:

Quote
An each way single consists of two bets on one selection in one event. The first bet is on the selection to win and the second bet is on the selection to finish in the allotted placings i.e. second, third etc. The place terms will vary depending on the event and the place part of the bet is settled at the relevant place odds. For example, if the place terms for a race are the first three at a fifth of the odds and your selection finishes second or third, you will receive only a fifth of the full odds times your stake money as a return. A £1 each-way single has a total stake of £2.

I use Betfair; in there you bet the win and place separately and thus the stakes are separate as well. It also means the odds between them are not necessarily connected. Often I just bet for a place.
