Couldn't get on the internet last night. rubschin:
Decided to do a anti malware scan this evening to see if it could find anything that might be causing trouble.
Clasping at straws more than anything else tbh, as I know virtually bog all about these things....believe it or not. Shocked:
It came back with two items anyway:
Adware Zango HKCV/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/Tool bar
Game Pl.....?HKCV/ Microsoftware?Crossrider..
What are these two items, and could they have actually prevented me from getting on this thing last night?
I've destroyed them now anyway. eveilgrin:

He'll answer when he's next in no doubt.
Only the 2nd time I've had the sweeping thing catch something tbh.

My laptop was running slowly last night, so I ran Spybot. It found that Adware thing on mine this morning, I got rid of it and back to normal now
-
Google is usually a good info source on problem programmes
They're prolly just irritant programmes not outright malware

Zango is your bog standard piece of adware which will occasionally redirect your browser to websites belonging to whoever has sponsored it. Check your desktop and remove the shortcut that it would have added there as well.
If memory serves me correctly (not a forgone conclusion these days) Crossrider is a framework for developing single code cloud applications across different browsers instead of having to make bespoke code for IE, Chrome etc. rubschin:

Barman was just about to say that whistle:

Why don't you say what you mean?
Sadly there is no helping some people Banghead he posted using Chrome without having any such adware problems
Here's a clue as to why Chrome wasn't your problem:
. . .It came back with two items anyway:
Adware Zango HKCV/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/Tool bar . . .

I did say wait for Tel......... whistle:

Oh I dunno.
My well documented numptiness on these matters is actually fairly well documented, and i WASN'T blaming you personally you plant pot. ::)
I was merely clasping at straws PRIOR to the anti malware results.
If it can be considered that Google Chrome itself wasn't to blame, then I'll glady re-install it, as I did actually find it quicker and resonably easy to navigate around, so thank you for the recommendation but also, please wind yer neck in! Banghead

PC tinkerers use Firefox as there are billions of almost debugged free add ons you can play with
Firefox and iExplorer users have to keep restarting their browsers as both have memory leak issues with sites developed for Chrome - like Google sites
Firefox and Chrome users have to keep refreshing pages as neither supports the auto update if newer feature only iExplorer seems to have.
But since SMF doesn't update the time code that often that's no loss unless you visit the beeb or PHP sites like *koff* frequently
So I use Chrome

Try installing AVG 2013 free - integrates with browsers and provides a little bit more protection.
FF is becoming bloated, latest release is quite odd at times, now refuses to have to do with my my webmail (normally use Outlook but sometimes use a machine that is not configured for it).
Chrome is ok, but Google is now integrating so many of its services into one package that you have to be careful if you start to use anything other than the browser bit.

No.
Nasties usually picked up from iffy web-sites or ones with poor security - ie nasties get hidden inside adverts etc - just rolling the cursor over them can cause an infection unless you have enough security - doesn't matter what browser you are using really.
Android devices are the up and coming targets for nasties.
-
Were those things that the anti malware scan picked up (as mentioned above) really nasty nasties then that would have me prevented me from getting a connection?

Possibly/probably.
The nasties werk at different levels and some don't werk at all cos they were firkled together from on-line toolkits and the person didn't know what they doing.
They may -
disable ant-virus software and/or updates
prevent you visiting anti-virus sites to get new software or updates
point you at sites other than your usual search ones
display loads of pop-up ads and warnings
invite more nasties in, which in turn will invite more nasties
Worst infection I've cleared, was over 500 different nasties all started by one - they were a mixture of dangerous ones and just plain stupid ones, had to use 3 different bits of software and about 18 hours scanning.

Mud in the keyboard more like or MM using his pooter

There's always the devious ones that also place a copy in your restore points just for good measure or alter the registry to re-load themselves with a random name after a re-boot everytime you think you've cleared them.
It's quite challenging at times.
