Title: The All New Elfin Safety Thread
Post by: Barman on September 28, 2013, 10:11:04 AM
I thought we had one of these but I couldn't find it.... perhaps it was removed for Elfin Safety reasons.... or to protect an cheeeldren or summat....? Shrugs:

Anyhoooo...

How I larfed last night like...

Went to the village amphitheatre which was absolutely packed solid - 1,000+ people in there...

This place...

(https://www.virtual-pub.com/SMF/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs24.postimg.org%2F9vu3s1gpd%2FDSC02121.jpg&hash=f1af89d3e2f4a8eaa43fc0ad7af1e97bfb0e7ebc) (http://postimg.org/image/9vu3s1gpd/)

...but with more people, all with chairs, cushions, lunch boxes and loadsabooze....

About ten minutes before the show started I made a comment about how amazing it was that the village people (yes, YMCA, etc. ::)) had managed to build the place all those years ago and it hadn't fallen down, sprung a leak etc....

Just then the power went off - pitch black the place was, not a single emergency light or illuminated 'Exit' sign in the whole place! happy001

So what did we do...? We just sat there and kept eating and drinking until they fixed it of course!  Thumbs:

Thank god there are still places like that in this country. As previously mentioned, I visited the Minack Theatre in Cornwall earlier this week and was amazed at the lack of H & S but also happy to see that it was really down to good old common sense. Rowena Cade who more or less built the thing in the 1930's must have been one determined woman  happ096

There is a kiddies play park just up the road from here...

When developers build a project they have to give 20% of the land back to the village... It is called the 'green area'....

Theoretically, the village maintains it, in reality they never do...  noooo:

So it either just grows weeds and has stuff dumped on it or the developer can do something with it to keep the place looking nice...

Some just put a path through and a couple of benches and lights but more popular is to turn it into a little play park... Although why anybody would want to have a play park next to their luxury villa is completely beyond me....

Anyhooo... just up the road is this little play park built in the 'green area' between two houses...

They put in some paths and planted trees... It has swings, a slide and a see-saw.... and a precipitous drop over the edge of the cliff with no barrier! happy001

I'll take some pictures tomorrer...

There is another just round the corner, lights, benches, swings and slide.... they've planted Oleander all around that one which as some of you may know is highly poisonous!

Yes

You must have had that frustrating experience of having to stop for US school buses.  I've always had this thought that once little Walt Wankerthrob III gets to be 16 he sets off for his first Greyhound bus ride, arrives in town, gets off the bus and walks straight under an 18 wheeler that he thought would stop like they always did

About ten minutes before the show started I made a comment about how amazing it was that the village people (yes, YMCA, etc. ::)) had managed to build the place all those years ago and it hadn't fallen down, sprung a leak etc....

Just then the power went off - pitch black the place was, not a single emergency light or illuminated 'Exit' sign in the whole place! happy001

Well, now that you mention that....  rubschin:

I was shooting (clays) with the guy that I made that comment to in the afternoon...

One of the targets was dead easy.... it came right towards you and hung in the air just waiting to be smoked....

The guy I was with said "this is one of those targets that makes you feel good about yourself as you can always hit it..."

And I said, "until one of those bizarre occasions when you miss it time and time again but can't work out why...."

How we larfed!  lol:

Just walked the dog (NAE) up to the play area...

View from the road...
(https://www.virtual-pub.com/SMF/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs11.postimg.org%2Fp18d58mm7%2FDSCN0834.jpg&hash=074e273027246cc4fdcddb5489a228808eec06b0) (http://postimg.org/image/p18d58mm7/)
They covered large areas with gravel and sand - it all blew away the day after they finished it... you will see the site is quite exposed...
(https://www.virtual-pub.com/SMF/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs11.postimg.org%2Fcy31hobjz%2FDSCN0835.jpg&hash=92f971c5488b4618acf3d64775926ddd8855b9a0) (http://postimg.org/image/cy31hobjz/)
The trees didn't fare too well either - they need to be tied to 6 feet of rebar - not a bit of bamboo...
(https://www.virtual-pub.com/SMF/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs11.postimg.org%2Fdxtcddqpr%2FDSCN0836.jpg&hash=acd513b3a2aff1944c89b592f48e6a6725ec6dfc) (http://postimg.org/image/dxtcddqpr/)
The view over the edge....
(https://www.virtual-pub.com/SMF/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs11.postimg.org%2F5knnipri7%2FDSCN0837.jpg&hash=c14fa755fe850751290156e5e73f696bb6cb14e1) (http://postimg.org/image/5knnipri7/)
Not a huge initial drop but not much chance of stopping yourself once you are over!
(https://www.virtual-pub.com/SMF/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fs11.postimg.org%2F7qhyd7uyn%2FDSCN0838.jpg&hash=b5ebeb134c188ae8d79370caaaac509ce8a555ef) (http://postimg.org/image/7qhyd7uyn/)
But a nice view of the sea before you go!

Just walked the dog (NAE) up to the play area...

View from the road...

They covered large areas with gravel and sand - it all blew away the day after they finished it... you will see the site is quite exposed...

The trees didn't fare too well either - they need to be tied to 6 feet of rebar - not a bit of bamboo...

The view over the edge....

Not a huge initial drop but not much chance of stopping yourself once you are over!

I keep looking at the pictures and my main thought is it all needs a good season of rain

Ta though and yes a good view of the sea.

Precipices are a bit of a weird H&S case.  People are scared of them because of the "just one wrong step" thought but do that on the average town pavement and you will still be so much strawberry jam.  Yes they put railings up at the main junctions but now someone has pointed out that cyclists get squashed against them.

The most scary place I have ever been is a middle floor of the leaning tower of Pisa.  No safety rails and kids running around the outside.   I'm told there have been changes, I hope so.

H&S is about being reasonable with a sense of proportion but life and limb should not be treated cheaply just because they need a little thought.

You're right actually... it has been a bit of empty space for the past ten years...

They had to bring a load of soil and 'build up' the cliff edge part to make it wide enough... it will be interesting to see how it all copes with the rains this winter...

Why they didn't just plant a load of Yuccas on it I have no idea....  noooo:

There is another 'play park' ( the one with the Oleander) no more than 150m (150 yards for you oldies) away...

The rain might be the end of it...  lol:

The large patio area and pool you can see in picture 4 completely disappeared the first time it rained... the whole lot just collapsed and washed away....  noooo:

So they re-built it all....

... and the next winter the same thing happened.... doh:

Will be interesting to see what happens this year now it has been rebuilt again.....
