Title: Getting quotes
Post by: Uncle Mort on August 21, 2014, 09:03:20 AM
I have decided to replace the wall at the front of the property, the current wall wasn't built very well, frost and vandalism(!) have taken it's toll. So I get a couple of local builders in for quotes. Both quotes are similar so I choose the lower, not just for the price but also because he seemed "right"

So I call the other to say "thanks but no thanks" which should be straightforward but of course he immediately drops his price. I still say no but somehow he makes me feel guilty and bullied.

Why should that be so?

cos you're human perchance?

I never go for quotes lowered to undercut another, they will always find a way to get their profit margin back.

I think you can probably tell a lot about the quality of his work from the 'feel' you had for him.....

True, I always say "give me your best price" so by them coming back with a lower quote they're already showing that they are trying to screw me.

QED.

You made the right choice and the later guilt proves that the technique works sometimes on some people.
