I figure that by then there will have been enough complaints about crappy programming constructive criticism to choose whether or not to give it a go. whistle:

Get a 4Gb memory stick, shove it in one of the spare USB ports in the back of the computer then go into properties for that drive. You will see a tab marked Readyboost. Activate it and you should see a performance increase as it will use the drive as extra memory.

I couldn't see how an external essentially Flash drive could be faster than an HDD with a cache and less buffers between it and the CPU cache but hey ho
SSD drives seem to still be a bit pricey (the Notebook I mostly use only cost me £120) but they will take over from HDDs soon. In effect it's what smart phones and tablets already use

I have to admit Readyboost seems to have a more pronounced effect on laptops rather than desktops but if you have a spare memory stick it's worth a try.

You would have to have the laptop equivalent of PeeWee Herman for it not to run according to the specs on Microsoft's website:
System requirements
If you want to upgrade to Windows 10 on your PC or tablet, here’s what it takes.
Latest OS: Make sure you are running the latest version either Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 Update.
Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster processor or SoC RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) for 32-bit or 2 GB for 64-bit Hard disk space: 16 GB for 32-bit OS 20 GB for 64-bit OS Graphics card: DirectX 9 or later with WDDM 1.0 driver Display: 1024x600
If all else fails you can manually get the reservation here
Wi-Fi Sense is enabled out-of-the-box on both Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows 10. I know this because I have used both operating systems -- the former more so than the latter -- and have gone through their setup process more than once. But here is the trick -- this feature can be disabled at the setup stage, if users want to do so.
Only if they know about the issue and know how to disable it (remember that many Arsebook users can't even spell their own name). If the Register hadn't highlighted this would they have known?
The issue is Microsoft defaulting to leaving a gate open, what else have they done this way?

Microsoft asks for feedback...

I've been using Windows since Windows 386...
Great product, but I only use a fraction of the features. I now have a 3GHz Phenom and 12Gbyte of RAM to do what I did on a 1GHz Pentium with 1Gbyte of RAM and XP a few years ago...
Quite frankly, I'm not sure what it is doing with all that processing power...?
So what would make it better would be the ability to turn off vast swathes of features that I never use so I get a faster, more interactive experience with my hardware...

Yep same here
It seems that it says it is going to download Win 10 first but doesn't and then installs the Win 7 updates
I'm going to wait for my other PC to be 'ready' and then install it and see how that goes. I have a full set of restore discs for that and because it's a full size laptop it just rarely gets used so no tragedy if it's out of action for a week.

In all honesty it's one of those things that I'd never think about doing, it takes up around 25Gb but unless you have a system with a single hard drive that has limited capacity it's not a problem.

Do not click that 'delete old copies of windows' prompt until you have a full system restore to go back to

Yep it's a 200Gb note book with idiot partitions that refused to update the Sat Nav because of insufficient C drive spare
Hit the clear up space icon and it just froze up and would not restart. Did get to a go back to Win 7 icon but it's effed the registry profile
So I have Win 7 and a new identity
Today I will mostly be learning about registry merging and mending

I now have Windows 20
Well I've had to install it twice, rebuild a profile, fail to find the registry errors and all in all spend several hours of my life I won't get back
And it still wants that missing driver tracked down
But no data lost  eeek:

Last week, mine installed an upgrade then promptly shut down and would only let me log in as a guest. 10 minutes later it re-booted and has been fine since. Even the touch pad scrolling works again.

It certainly did. I was in charge of bringing word processors into the company back in the dark ages. The secretaries and typing pool (that tells you how long ago it was) took to them immediately. I'd bought two to start with and it was handbags at dawn for access to them.

But the way it's panned out, word processing actually slows down final document production. When it was typed people would think twice before requesting changes, now a document is iterated so many times as everyone gets their input- because it's easy to make changes.
Arguably we get better final documents but quicker? noooo:

I loved COBOL because it was so close to English in comparison which made the paperwork a hell of a lot easier to put together. (Yes I know you are supposed to do the algorithms and flowcharts first but the college was so hell bent on trying to teach JSP that they just managed to confuse most of us. It didn't take long before we realised that we got better marks by writing the program then making up all the paperwork to fit. whistle: )

I had to embed hex into COBOL programs to send data to a laser printer - Canon told me I was the first in the UK to do it. Unfortunately no one else in my team could get their heads around it and so all future wierd and wonderful stuff got dropped on me, like outputting to Oracle database, Word and Excel, nearly always wanted yesterday.
Did octal, binary etc at school. We were the first year to do what was then called "Modern Maths", Boolean algebra and stuff. Unfortunately they introduced it at the beginning of the first term of 4th year, so we had to forget 3 years of trad maths and only had 2 years before taking O levels. That was fun, many people could not hack it at all.

Outlook suddenly demanding so much processing power the poor little thing overheated regularly and would randomly shutdown

One iPad Pro being set up as I type. It will of course not go as well as I hope but then Win 10 didn't either
I'm loving my Asus laptop with Win 10 now... Can't imagine ever going back to a desktop or buying another tablet...
My new phone (phablet really) gives a pretty good mobile experience to complement it...
Twas a bit of an impulse but they just don't make notebooks like this one anymore but it's struggling with bust USB ports etc however in a way buying the iPad is all down to the late Dan Gurney

My brother tells me his obit in Autosport is excellent (it is) but I don't buy Autosport but I remembers I did sign up to the every magazine you've ever thought Readly service for my hols and never used it as it's crap on the phone and notebook. So thinks I read it on Mrs K's vintage iPad and bloody hell it's very good. Read loads of stuff - Autosport of course but also What Car and Spectator.
So [digression mode off] just had to have one
And the Readly service I was going to kill off will be around a fair bit longer. Suggest give it the free month trial.

Well Windows 10 and indeed Windows days for me are numbered. Wasn't so much the software but the paucity of decent small PCs to support windows
One iPad Pro being set up as I type. It will of course not go as well as I hope but then Win 10 didn't either
I'm loving my Asus laptop with Win 10 now... Can't imagine ever going back to a desktop or buying another tablet...

Well a few days later I wish I’d gone for a surface PC. As with everything the devil is in the detail and the detail is so much better with Windows
Does the iPad support Microsoft Office? Yes but only if you only use the features you get in the free office packages. So what’s the point Microsoft/Apple?
So far it doesn’t do for Excel: - copy Excel sheets inside workbooks - rename said sheets - edit/add conditional formatting
for Powerpoint: - A4 paper size - Entering shapes with exact sizes so I couldn’t use it to draft out the new bathroom design
for Google Search: - search by custom date range (but Bing does so maybe Google can go sling their hook)
I can see Mrs K having this iPad (hers is over 5 years old) and me buying a £mega Surface PC before the year is out
Anyway in short beware buying what appears to be brilliant (and in some ways it is) and is highly rated in those professional reviews that only look at the obvious features
Not exactly a Banghead cry: but a definite rubschin:

LibreOffice is good but unless they've adapted it since I last did any real work on it, it doesn't have full Excel functionality. Certain formulas just wont translate across and spreadsheets that use VBA need to be reworked to Star Basic

Well the iPad has just been relegated
OK for social networking and email but frankly rubbish is you ever want to really use a tablet/laptop for anything serious. Well that and that once I got it Mrs K has wanted me to pass it to her (to replace her 5+ years old iPad 3 that was struggling on all sorts of stuff)
So I raided the piggy bank and got meself a Surface
And in many ways it is the bees knees, a thing of some beauty and blistering fast but why oh why do they supply it with a DNS cache that effs up accessing just about everything. Took me 24 hours to diagnose and fix that but I am supposed to be an engineer (well was). What hope has Jo or Jane Normal when presented with a PC that will access Bing and fuck all else? Poor show Micros-shit
Anyway back to thread topic, seems I am Windows 10 forever now

So what do you need a real keyboard for that you can't do with the touchscreen one I assume you're using now?

I'm using my laptop at the moment, can't use the onscreen one as that needs a mouse to work.

Maybe tell Microsoft about the Computer Misuse Act section 3 (3) http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1990/18/section/3 Recklessly forcing an update on you without checking the loaded USB drivers were compatible
(A threat some of us hinted at against BT when they effed up the YouView boxes over the air, how much that influenced them is unknown but eventually they fixed them)

We new (for me) pooter has arrived and I've been spending the day sorting it out and trying to work out why it's unable to detect my graphics card Banghead
I've got a nasty feeling that the PCI 16x slot is buggered. cry:

Graphics card is working again cloud9:
Forgot I'd had this problem a while back after a windows update and a couple of days later a quietly released hotfix solved the issue it fixed itself.
Just got to deal with low res and rough graphics while I wait for the Radeon drivers to download.

Another one yesterday, that basically took all day.
Now, a quick disk cleanup shows I can delete the previous Windows installations...29.8GB... rubschin:
I'm picking up a second-hand Asus Laptop this morning to use as a backup.
The seller is going to 'Factory Reset' it which presumably means I'll be downloading updates until June before I can use it... ::)

Another update I didn't want overnight Thursday. All the files I was working on saved as weird named autorecovered files
And then another one last night did it again. I go into the settings to find that for reasons known only to Microshit they have decided this PC is Mrs K's and not mine. FFS Banghead
Think I've sorted it

Since the latest update, startup times increased considerably and Firefox takes ages to initially load too cussing:

Another irritating thing is Cortana - easy enough to take it out of the startup programs, but it will fire up if you use the search function from the start button. A quick bit of regeditry kills it off for good.

Only since the latest update - prior to that you could just turn it off via a pill switch or Speech, inking, & typing, and click "Stop getting to know me."
Now it seems, regedit or gpedit.msc.
