It is pointless speculating as to the cause of the crash; lots of ill-informed and reckless theories get bandied about at times like this. We'll have a better idea as to a likely cause once the airworthiness authorities has checked the flight data and cockpit voice recorders - so we should wait until then.
Air travel is safer today than it's ever been. When I was a kid in the '60's it seems like there was a major air crash every few weeks. The two Malaysian Airlines losses last year continue to make headlines...and the collective loss of life from these two incidents may have skewed air safety figures for last year (though both aircraft are likely to have been brought down for non-airworthiness reasons).

Pointless maybe but in an age where just about everyone expects to fly sometime in the future then that same just about everyone will be wondering why and yet won't have any real clue
All a bit concerning. I'll go with the very imprecise PICNIC theory

You can make the planes as safe as possible and maintain them to the highest standard. You cannot do this to the minds and human frailties of those that pilot them.

The live press conference is going on right now. Looks like deliberate co-pilot action - not good

Would also make it harder to crash the plane seeing as it wouldn't be able to take off when its on bricks. rubschin:
