There has been talk about a big screen adaptation of the Gunslinger series for a while now but I'm in 2 minds about this as there have been few Stephen King adaptations that haven't been dire. The Shining and Shawshank Redeption are the only 2 that come to mind although The Mist wasn't that bad either. The less said about The Stand or the Langoliers the better. noooo:
Idris Elba as Roland is an interesting bit of casting, I can sort of see him in the role. I'm not so sure about McConaughey as the Man in Black though rubschin:

So last night we went to see Tim Burton's latest dark offering: Miss Peregrine's School for Peculiar Children
Weird on so many levels with a slightly laboured first half and a stonking second half with Samuel L Jackson at his menacing best hamming it up. Also wonderfully sick in parts so why something thinks it's OK for kiddiewinks with parents just defeats me.
All in all 3 stars out of 4 from me.

Where did the plane land then?
Perhaps you should see the film then. It's not about the water landing it's all about veteran post truther Clint Eastwood's fabricated story of the Safety Board investigation. A false narrative that will weaken their ability to investigate safety issues and as a result make yours, my and everybody's lives a little less safe.rubschin:Just watched 'Sully'...

Brilliantly filmed, the acting is v good (yes even Depp) and the basic yarn works well but it's a bit slow in the middle third

(which I have never done but who knows what tonight will bring)
Paddington 2. It's a sequel, it's about a kids book character, it shouldn't work for the likes of us
But it's brilliant (well after the first 10 minutes which are a bit slow), and just for BM there's even a musical dance number over the end credits. Loads of cameos (sadly no Nicole Kidman this time) and just wall to wall humour over a suitably absurd plot

Ok, review time for Solo...Shame but I'm not surprised. Ta for saving me 2 hours and several £££
Meh...
noooo:
Ok being serious now, I wanted to like this film, I really did. But I went in not expecting a masterpiece and I can safely say that Solo delivered in that regard. In all honesty if you strip away the nostalgia and take out Han, Chewie and Lando then all you would have an updated version of a Roger Corman B movie with elements lifted from Firefly such as the train robbery. Hell at one point in the film I actually dozed off briefly. The plot, such as it was, was bland, clunky and predictable and at no point in the film did I feel invested in any way with the characters, even if Donald Glover's portrayal of Lando was spot on.
Overall it was a couple of hours of my life that I'm not going to get back... noooo:

To be fair to the cast they did what they could with the shite they had been given but it's just another example of Kennedy running the franchise into the ground blindly championing her agenda. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against the idea of inclusion, but it has to be done properly. And from what has been shown in the recent films Gordon Brown's clunking fist was more subtle than the garbage the screenplay writers that have been allowed hammer into the stories. Compare the Star Wars films to the MCU films, Marvel is going from strength to strength because they not only use the right actor for the role and directors who respect the lore but they also give them the artistic freedom to make the films that the fans want. Star Wars on the other hand seems to be a drive to destroy one of if not the most successful franchise in movie history in order to rinse the customers and push an blatant agenda in a way that insults the fans.

Aside from the hatchet job done on Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia's Jedi Poppins scene, Darth Whiny Emo, Rey's sudden mastery of Jedi combat when she has had little or no instruction, the blatant rip off of the Hoth battle from Empire Strikes Back, killing off senior characters just to get rid of them and then creating a pointless throwaway character in Holdo when she seems to have been crowbarred in just to force Dameron's mutiny by not telling the remaining command staff what the plan was. She would have been much better implemented by developing her over Ep 8 and 9, then there is the whole "we are on a secret mission and cannot give ourselves away but we will pretty much wave a huge flag saying Rebel spies here by rescuing the local wildlife" and of course the JarJar Binks of the new trilogy Rose Tico.

Lieberman said: ‘A top priority for us on The Aeronauts is authenticity. With that in mind, we intend to do as much balloon filming in the sky as the weather will allow.
Was curious about this film when it was first announced, right up to the point where I found out that they had got rid of Henry Coxwell (a record breaking balloonist at the time who was on the actual balloon flight with Glaisher and was instrumental in averting a catastrophe mid flight by releasing a trapped valve when the balloon ascended so high up that they began to pass out) and replaced him with some random female character instead.QuoteLieberman said: ‘A top priority for us on The Aeronauts is authenticity. I'm starting to think they should have an irony category in the Oscars for films like this...

Still on the subject of Star Wars, there is a fan re-edit of the godawful mess that was Episode 8 in the works and if the trailer is anything to go by then it's going to be a better piece of work than the original (then again that isn't really shooting for the sky).If it's got Daisy Ridley in it I will watch it

Daisy is still in it but a lot of the scenes are completely changed from the mess that was the original. For one thing Luke actually trains her, Jedi Poppins is no more and Akbar actually has screen time.
Most of the complaints I've been hearing from people leaving the film are that it seems to be playing fast and loose with the canon. I will admit I chuckled and shook the hand of the lass who said she fell asleep not long into the film and missed pretty much the entire thing.. lol:lol: lol: lol:
Apparently a straight sequel from the second one, so that godawful mess that came out in 2016 no longer counts cloud9:But the second one was utter shite. Worstest thing Sigourney Weaver ever did.

If you're able to watch this movie with an open mind and not get hung up on "unrealistic aspects" then it's extremely enjoyable. It was a well cast film and they did a great job telling two parallel stories at the same time. I had a lot of fun watching this and was entertained throughout the entire film.

BTW he loved MI-6 Fallout. So are his reviews gospel or garbage?

Well the early audience reviews of Captain Marvel both online and from asking people as they left the screen aren't good, one person even said she would rather watch Green Lantern again. lol:
Once Disney take it off the restricted list and I can use a free ticket I may give it a look but I'm not desperate to see it by any means.

Mrs K is talking about us going to see it tomorrow. It's a clever premise for a film but the extracts look a bit cheaply done. Maybe they spent the production budget de-aging Samuel L
Anyway may report back (if we don't get diverted to Ask Italian like we did last time)

The general feedback I've had is that when the cat that is used as a plot device has more on screen charisma and personality than the person in the title role then there has been a major cock up in the casting department. noooo:

It may be from an early version but looking at the terminator when it's jumped in the air to throw that metal rod it looks like the CGI Neo did in the second Matrix film.Thought Linda Hamilton was very good in that clip. She was rubbish in the first Terminator film and superb in the second.
It's got potential though, I'll give it that

Knives Out (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8946378/)
At heart a whodunnit yarn with a twist but thoroughly entertaining in a tongue in cheek way for its just over 2 hour run time. Daniel Craig, Jamie Lee-Curtis, Chris Evans, Toni Colette, Christopher Plummer and even Don Johnson all excellent playing dislikeable characters. Even has a clever use of vomiting as part of the plot

Lovecraft's work helped keep me sane one summer years ago when I was working in a hotel owned by a religious couple who used to employ members of theircultwierd ass Alpha evangelical groupcongregation who couldn't find work anywhere else. Now I have nothing against religion as a whole but I'm dead against people forcing their views on others so as I was reading a compilation of mythos tales at the time I used it to scare off the gormless zealots who decided that saving my soul was the most important thing in the bloody world. I don't think they ever realised that I was just quoting chunks of his horror stories and it wasn't my personal religion.... whistle:

For Villeneuve, this 55-year-old story about a planet being mined to death was not merely a space adventure, but a prophecy. “No matter what you believe, Earth is changing, and we will have to adapt,” he says. “That’s why I think that Dune, this book, was written in the 20th century. It was a distant portrait of the reality of the oil and the capitalism and the exploitation—the overexploitation—of Earth. Today, things are just worse. It’s a coming-of-age story, but also a call for action for the youth.”
In an intriguing change to the source material, Villeneuve has also updated Dr. Liet Kynes, the leading ecologist on Arrakis and an independent power broker amid the various warring factions. Although always depicted as a white man, the character is now played by Sharon Duncan-Brewster (Rogue One), a black woman. “What Denis had stated to me was there was a lack of female characters in his cast, and he had always been very feminist, pro-women, and wanted to write the role for a woman,” Duncan-Brewster says. “This human being manages to basically keep the peace amongst many people. Women are very good at that, so why can’t Kynes be a woman? Why shouldn’t Kynes be a woman?”

Harold and Maude......
A 'tour de force' of a film and one of Hal Ashby's best films
'Harold & Maude' is one of those 'sleeper' films that just seems to resonate that bit more with every passing year. Harold, played by the criminally under-utilized Bud Cort, is the quintessential disaffected rich kid wanting to find some meaning in a vacuous life who hooks up with the devil-may-care Maude through their mutual love of attending funerals (Joyce's word 'fun-for-all' springs readily to mind in those scenes). There is plenty to love about this film, the slower pace and the lampooning of easy targets, the 'gung-ho' military uncle and the fetishist priest for example. Here is a film that really stands up well to repeated viewings.
Looks like when things get back to normal it could be a good time for the smaller independent cinema chains now that larger ones are throwing a temper tantrum against Universal over Trolls 2 and banning any other of their films from being shown. So for the sake of one film going straight to VOD they are sacrificing guaranteed major earnings from:A stupid spat mainly caused by very well paid people not engaging brain before using keyboard
Jurassic World Dominion
Fast and Furious 9
Minions: The Rise of Gru
Boss Baby 2
I know that they want to keep the old status quo but this is just a case of cutting off your nose to spite your face. facepalm:
I'm surprised that AMC were the first to kick this off though, even with the extra $500 million they raised in debt offering and the share price increase with around $5 billion total debt they are still bloody close to going into bankruptcy

They'll be a kiss and make up but this is likely to be looked back at as another roadmarker on the road to the end of cinemas. The answer to the question 'would cinemas have existed if VOD and 50" LED screens been invented first?' is no.

WorryingSome crackers on that list but not sure any would get me into a cinema right now.
If half of the precautions I've heard are accurate I'm not sure how many cinemas will survive. Losing half the rows in a screen and then half of the remaining seats to ensure distancing may only be economically viable for larger sites.
You missed the This is your Life thing point: point:

And so it begins, Wonder Woman 1984 has been put back till Christmas. While I can appreciate the arguments cinemas are already struggling due to low numbers and reduced capacity. If the studios keep putting films back or onto VOD there isn't going to be a cinema left for them to put films on to in the future. noooo:It's a worry but what to do? VOD is as much just responding to the masses of people that would rather watch pirated copies than go to the flicks. Not just Covid threatening cinemas
The studios switching to VOD won't prevent piracy though, if anything it will make it easier as you can stream to a computer and then use video capture to record it.I guess their theory is that many pirate copy watchers do it more for the home viewing convenience than to steal. I'd hate to see cinemas go, they're a huge part of my life but if I'm honest mostly last century. Gone from ~2 visits a month to ~ 2 a year in normal times. And yes that's part explained by the content is nowadays really aimed at those much younger than baby boomers but they're the ones most likely to want to see stuff on their screen and now

The film follows a couple played by KJ Apa and Sofia Carson who fell in love virtually during “COVID-23” and try to meet up.
The “Romeo & Juliet”-esque plot is set in 2024 when “the mortality rate is over 50 percent and the virus kills at an accelerated rate” and “infected Americans are forced from their homes and into quarantine camps,” according to Entertainment Weekly.

Enola Holmes (yes we gave in and bought a Netflix subscription, she wanted to watch Prom) 90% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes
It's based on what are called 'young adult' books but with that caveat it is brilliantly done with an outstanding performance by its lead actress and many of its 'spot the star' cast in a reasonable yarn. Hardly cerebral but definitely entertaining.

Given that it's Ivan Reitman's son directing and they've got Murray, Hudson and Akroyd to reprise their characters it sounds like it's going to be a far more authentic version than the 2016 abomination.

Enjoy a double dose of Dr Who in the cinema this July with a double bill featuring Dr. Who And The Daleks and Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. lovingly regenerated in out-of-this-world 4K for the perfect cinema experience for Doctor Who and sci-fi fans.
Dr. Who And The Daleks was the first big screen film adaptation of British TV’s most iconic sci-fi hero, and the first time Doctor Who was ever seen in colour. Having invented the TARDIS, a strange machine capable of travelling into other dimensions, the Doctor and his three young accomplices set forth on a quest through time and space. Their journey takes them into the dark, undiscovered depths of the universe and to the planet of Skaro, a primitive world devastated by nuclear war and populated by two warring species, a peaceful tribe known as Thals and a life form heavily mutated by radiation, encased in protective machines, a merciless force of destruction known as The Daleks!
The second film, Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. sees Cushing return to the big screen – the future of Planet Earth now belongs to The Daleks, but deep within the London Underground a group of resistance freedom fighters are planning an attack. Can The Doctor help them succeed in destroying their extra-terrestrial enemies and take back control of Earth?
Directed by Gordon Flemyng, featuring the legendary Peter Cushing as everyone’s favourite timelord and also starring Roy Castle, Bernard Cribbins, Jennie Linden and Roberta Tovey. Despite not being part of the BBC’s Doctor Who IP, these films have remained a firm favourite amongst the "Whoniverse" and are much loved by fans across the world.
I'm never going to go see it in the cinema but this trailer is brilliant

In The Retaliators, an upstanding pastor uncovers a dark and twisted underworld as he searches for answers surrounding his daughter’s brutal murder. A high-octane original soundtrack and cameos from some of the biggest names in rock music set the tone as this horror-thriller reveals a game of revenge played using a new set of rules.
Marc Menchaca, Michael Lombardi, and Joseph Gatt star in a horror experience where Five Finger Death Punch, Tommy Lee, Papa Roach, The Hu, Ice Nine Kills, Escape The Fate, and more appear onscreen and on The Retaliators Original Soundtrack.

I wish I could say it was worth what I paid for it (€0.00) but it wasn't.... noooo:
The biggest screen in the whole world couldn't make this a good movie... I'd rather watch the cat and trap segment at the beginning for 2½ hours than the movie again... ::)

Thinking about going to see Barbie rubschin:
Managed to traumatise some of my younger colleagues earlier. They were talking about the Bambi live action remake and what Disney meant by it being modernised and how it would include climate change and an anti gun message etc when I chimed in saying that in this case it was to hide the fact that because of poor business decisions and declining park attendance the studio doesn't have the money for the CGI that will be needed so they are having an all furry cast and claiming inclusion.
Somehow I managed not to crack up laughing at their expressions of absolute horror.. lol:
I'm a bad bad person eveilgrin:
Fucking hell this may be the goriest Saw film yet. I just watched someone cut their leg off while someone else was drilling into their head. The film pulls you in at the start with the way they build the characters up before really fucking you up seeing what happens to them.
You really should go and see it but for fucks sake don't eat anything beforehand

This isn't flogging a dead horse, this is beating the hell out of the zombified remains in the hope that you can get something usable. Banghead:thumbsup:
Lana, the Matrix trilogy should have remained that, a trilogy. The fourth film was absolutely dire and announcing a fifth one sounds like even more inept necromantic filmmaking. If you are hell bent on milking the franchise then make the prequels, at least then you can make an interesting story about the rise of AI and the rising tensions among humanity leading to the war.

Well the Guy Richie adaptation of Operation Postmaster looks interesting. Cavil seems to work as Gus March-Phillips and whoever was cast as Anders Lassen looks like he's done a decent job of portraying him. Think I'll give this a look. rubschin:

I've now seen the film and............errr.............well if you don't know anything about Operation Postmaster and haven't read the book the film is (very) loosely based on then it's standard Guy Richie fare. If you do know about the operation or have read the book then............it's standard Guy Richie fare so historical accuracy will take a bit of a back seat in favour of his trademark Richieism which gives it a very 'Dirty Dozen' vibe although the characters don't feel overly fleshed out.

I'll admit I had high hopes for the film and then some hefty reservations when I heard it was a Guy Richie project and overall it turned out pretty much as I expected. While I can understand it may have complicated how Richie wanted the film to flow. For instance Gus March-Phillips wasn't in prison prior to the operation and knew Appleyard both from Dunkirk and operations with the Small Scale Raiding Force, a group Anders Lassen had also started building his legend in. Operation Postmaster wasn't a one and done mission that was over in a couple of weeks. It was the first of many SOE operations and took months to plan and train for. Plus it was was intended as a cutting out operation for the three boats from the beginning instead of being a last minute change in plans.
Including Ian Fleming was a clever tip of the hat as he was a member of the SOE and had previously stated that James Bond was based in no small part of Gus March-Phillips, he wasn't directly under Brigadier Gubbins but Rear Admiral Godfrey instead so wouldn't have been part of that meeting at the start. .
Richard Lippett was removed completely from the story and replaced with Marjorie Stewart who was a member of the SOE but likely wasn't involved with this particular operation and Mr Heron who is one of a number of characters who have been made up for a more Richiefied story (see also the Nazi commandant at Fernando Po)

I've been a fan of Coppola ever since I first saw The Godfather so hearing that this was meant to be his magnum opus I was excited to come down and watch it.

It's OK but not a patch on the first two films which did set a very high bar. The first hour dragged a bit but and misses the scatterbrainness of Sally Hawkins then it got a lot better and there are some very funny moments esp in the last 5 minutes.

Just had a look at the advanced bookings for Snow White for the opening weekend. There are 17 screenings over Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Usually when we have the live action remakes we'd already have at least a couple of hundred advanced bookings with that many shows.
Currently we have less than 50 for the entire weekend. Something tells me that I've been optimistic on how it's going to perform and apocalyptic isn't even going to come close to the imminent disaster. noooo:

Well I got some reviews from a few of tonight's customers. Some of the comments have bordered on art.
"Who supplied the costumes, Temu?"
"where did they get the dwarf models? An unreleased PS3 game?"
"Someone needs to go back to school and learn what continuity means"
"Character development? I flushed better writing down the toilet this morning"
"Disney would have been better off blowing $400m on the tables at Vegas, they'd probably lose less money"
"What the hell were the writing team smoking and where can I get some?"
And my absolute favourite which cracked me up (yes I am a bad person redface: )
"Fucking hell, that bombed so hard the Enola Gay is fucking jealous"
Bit of a disturbing review tonight.
"I'd rather have a prostate exam from Captain Hook then endure that pile of shite again"
Not sure if he meant the pirate or Abu Hamza and I wasn't going to ask. Either way it's a brain bleach moment. eeek:
And just to prove how perverse audiences are: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c74ke77v7rvo
'Disney's live-action version of the classic fairy tale Snow White has topped the North American box office chart despite a slew of underwhelming reviews.
The movie has taken an estimated $87.3m (£67.5m) globally during its opening weekend, according to Box Office Mojo, external. Almost half of that figure came from North America.'

It gets the Grumpy seal of approval. There are some changes but that was to be expected when moving it from film to stage but overall very well done and highly entertaining. Coogan nailed all 4 roles and you can tell he was having fun playing Strangelove. Thumbs:
