Title: Your first car
Post by: GROWLER on September 04, 2007, 04:47:28 PM
What was your first car then ey?

1962 105E Anglia here. Primrose yellow with a white roof and loads of rust. sick2:

Took me all over the country with the lads on board though. Virtually lived in the bloody thing. New points and dissy rotar arm every 3000 miles.
Masserati air horns, chrome pancake air filter, blue spray on tinted windows, LFC stickers and a matt black grill too! eeek:

Ahhhh, they were the days. cloud9:

1956 100E Anglia. SV  Went from Camden to Wimbledon to pick it up and drove back during evening rush, found wife had missed bus to Leicester Square because she figured I'd give her a lift.

eeek:  I can still remember the terror of driving through Piccadilly et al on my first day of driving,  brings me out in a hot sweat just to think of it.

It didn't put me off though, within a week I was off to Wales in it, because it was raining I had to follow a lorry for miles down the A40 because every time I put my foot down to overtake it the wipers stopped!  Aaarrgh!

Oh Yes, now I think of it, I had to hold it in second gear all the time - it only had three - must have been all that traffic light racing down Tottenham Court Rd that did that...  redface:

....and had a welsh-cake griddle plate for a floor to stop my foot going through the hole.....

Happy days... cloud9:

Happy days... cloud9:

That's the sort of caper i'd have got up to, that and rolled up newspaper to shove in the sills before the filler was applied.happy001

I remember an Austin 1100 I bought from the auction and the big ends started knocking, so I drained the oil and shoved 5 liters of Hypoid 90in it. Stopped it knocking but was an absolute bastard to start. lol:

Anyone ever try the 'sawdust' trick? Wonder if it really did work?

My first car, purchased for 25 quid in 1964 was a 1949 Ford Prefect.

For the petrol heads:
Quote
This charming sidevalver was built by Ford of England at Dagenham, Essex. These cars have come to be known as the "Upright Fords" due to their rather tall and narrow, or upright look.

It was powered by a 4 cylinder 1172 cc side valve engine that developed 30 bhp. The rather small differential with a final drive ratio of about 5.5:1 delivered 10 hp to the road wheels which were shod with 5.00x16 tires. Naturally, if you got stuck going up Khandala it would not pull away from a standstill and you would have to reverse back to the bottom of the current slope and start again. All hills had to be attacked flat out. 1st and 2nd gears had no-synchromesh, so gear changes called for double declutch and jam, at peak revs to make progress.

The engine had no water pump, but relied on a thermo-siphon cooling system (the expansion of the coolant itself would force coolant to circulate through the system). It was common to see a steamy Ford Prefect after a hard drive pull into a petrol bunk, cool off for 30 minutes and have its radiator refilled. The engine had poured babbitt main and rod bearings. The engine also lacked an oil filter. At sustained high speed 70 km/h it would build up crankcase compression and throw out the oil through the back main into the clutch. The car could be coaxed to 100 km/h for a brief while but would quickly overheat and mess itself up with oil.

For suspension, the car had a beam front axle, transverse semi-elliptic leaf springs front and rear - like the Ford Model T. Shock absorbers were the Armstrong lever type. There were no anti-roll bars. These cars had Girling mechanical brakes using rods and levers, which were barely adequate when all was in perfect order, unless you had a particularly heavy foot.

The Prefect had an interior in Bakelite imitation wood and imitation leather PVC seats The car had 6 volt electrics. Its wipers were operated off engine vacuum, which meant the wipers would slow down while going uphill.

I do recall having to reverse up some hills in Wales where we (GF and I) went at weekends.

An old Standard 8, quite comparable to the pic below  lol:

Took the engine out over the winter, replaced it with a Vitesse's, remote gear shift as opposed to the 'proggling stick' it possessed, underslung the suspension and... wa'hay! Got done for speeding in the first week out  redface:

My dad had one of those!

My sister and I used to have to hit the side of the car to get the trafficators to come out when we went around corners.

Every couple of years we would paint it! He mixed emulsion paint with some varnish or other and we daubed it on with two inch brushes!

My first car was a 1973 Austin 1300.

Great motor and a huge engine bay for DIY repairs, etc.

Unfortunately, it slowly but surely rusted away to the point where I had to get my MoT?s from a mate over the telephone and sent through the post.

OK, I'll join in this one  ;)

First transport was a Triumph Tina scooter  redface:

This was replaced after passing car test with a mini - an Austin 850 to be precise, pale blue with a black roof 8722 KB was its reg. Had the old style 'magic wand' gear stick and a starter button on the floor! I used to run it on a shoestring which meant cheapo cross ply tyres which only got replaced when you could see the canvas (no tread depth regulations in those days!)

That was followed by (wait for it):

Triumph Herald 12/50
Ford Cortina Mk1 1500
Triumph Herald 13/60
Ford Cortina MkIII 1600 GT
Humber Hawk Automatic
Triumph Vitesse MkII convertible
Rover 3500
Wolseley 1300 + Austin Mini (now a two car family)
MG Midget
Triumph 2500 PI
Morris Marina  redface:
Commer Camper van
Volvo 264 automatic
Ford Cortina MkIV 2.5
Rover SD1 Diesel + Morris 8 Series E  (going backwards now - this was my 'classic' phase)
Peugeot 305 + Renault 25 Turbo Diesel (in France)
Citroen 2CV (also in France to replace the Pug)
Vauxhall Cavalier 1600
BMW 525TD
Rover SD1 2.6 Auto
Vauxhall Carlton 2L auto
Vauxhall Omega 2.5 auto
Vauxhall Omega 3L MV6 auto
Renault Clio 1.4

Phew! There were a couple of motorbikes chucked in at various points such as a Triumph Tiger Cub, a pair of Honda CX500's (one tourer one custom) and a Honda 400/4

Anyone else care to post their vehicular history or have I sent you all to sleep?

Shame, as THAT would probably be worth a couple of grand now, even as a non runner requiring renovation. Old shape Mini's are fetching ridiculously high prices. eeek:

The above will probably show 'timed out'. Just click on the home page to re-instate it.

It'll be sitting in a museum or garage somewhere, being trailored around to various classic car shows probably.
Can't you trace it through the owners club p'raps? rubschin:

I think I'll join the Escort owners forum to see if i can trace my old Mk2 seeing as it's still showing on the records.

Bought 1/18th scale model of it whilst at the Coventry Motor Museum last Sunday. Same colour and 3 doors too. IT is a Ghia though, not a GL.
Looks bloody brilliant sitting on top of the telly. cloud9:

Mrs Growler doesn't agree though. ::)

It is indeed.

I was bloody horrified when i first saw it in 'the yard' back in February. eeek:
Covered in shite, broken glass and open to the elements.
No mechanical damage, and it was driven into the yard apparently.
 Seperate chassis was/is straight.

Still finding the odd fragment of glass even now though.
Runs perfectly and passed all the stringent applicable tests.

Mini Van 850...brilliant. Passion wagon with mattress in ther back.

Austin 1800 auto...shed. auto box failed
Hillman Hunter. used as a taxi but only kept it 2 months when the filler the MAIN dealer had put into the sills started falling out. evil: Threw it back at them and ended up buying a.........

....Morris Marina 1.8....used as a taxi. Did 110,000 miles in 18 months. totally reliable.
Austin 1300GT ....one of the best and most loved cars I ever had.
Vauxhall Viva GT. ...quick but bloody thirsty
Ford Escort L 1300 Mk 2....ok
Ford Escort GL 1300 Mk 2....good and reliable

My first car was a 1973 Austin 1300.

Great motor and a huge engine bay for DIY repairs, etc.

Unfortunately, it slowly but surely rusted away to the point where I had to get my MoT?s from a mate over the telephone and sent through the post.

Pretty much the same as me then, except mine was a 1972 model in a lovely bird-shit yellow/green colour. Many a weekend I spent inventing ways to hold the rear subframe on!  Great memories!

Long story Growler, but I already had a Dolly (NLW 588V) when I inherited this one. The inherited one was in far better nick so I stuck it in the garage and there she still sits. I had the engine running 7 years ago, but the clutch had seized, so I put it on the "to do" list. I'll be redundant within 2 years, so it's a little project to look forward to.

Vehicle wise, over the years:-

1. Morris Marina 1.3 Coupe which I never got to drive as my older brother wrapped it around the only tree on the Sutton one-way system before I passed my test (1st time, at 1 years, 1 month and 28 days...)
2. Austin 1300
3. Mini 1275GT (bored to 1340 with twin 38's). I wrapped that one round a tree.
4. Dolly #1 - Vermillion Red apparently, but DVLA says that it was green too. I though the spraying looked a bit iffy.
It went like a rocket, toasting Escort RS Turbos and original MR2s at the time. It finally expired on a track day at Castle Coombe...
5. Dolly #2. In the garage.
6. Rover 827 Vitesse. Cost ?100 to buy and lasted three years before dying in the car park of my local (cam belt)
7. Current lexus GS300. Like drive a soft, fluffy white cloud and is very good friends with petrol retailers.

In between 4 and 6, all my travelling was by motorbike:-

1. Honda SS50ZB2E. Sitting in the sdame garage as Dolly #2 and good for 60mph and 110mpg!
2. Suzuki RGV250L. Lovely but fragile.
3. Yamaha FZR1000EXUP (de-restricted). Great, but swallowed oil if on a motorway.
4. GSXR750WW. Utterly, uterly lovely. 52 seconds round Brands Indy on road tyres (well...Diablo Corsas) and it would wheelie for mile after mile on a deserted French Autoroute.
5. Current GSXR750K3. As above, but a lot light and twitchier, scares me a bit so I can only manage 54s round Brands. Better for wheelies though...

Attached picture of me at Snetterton a few years ago, not the panic in the eyes...

Bit of a track day participant then ey Moany?

Went over to see the newly re-furbished circuit in Angelsey (Ty Croes) last saturday.
Felt a bit apprehensive as to just what it would look like, having competed there and loved the place as it was for many years.

Looks very good though tbh., and talkin' to some of my old sprinting mates that were competing, they all reported that it is fantastic to drive on.

Apparently, the owners are trying to get the BTCC to come there. It could certainly handle it I'd have thought.

Check it out if you've not been there before. http://www.angleseycircuit.com/
They do do bike track days, and it's probably the most scenic circuit in the country, with Snowdon and the Irish sea as a backdrop. eeek:

Bloody hell Growler, you expect him to be looking at the scenery whilst hooning round the circuit at ludicrous rates of knots on a knife edge of adhesion on two wheels! If I was circulating a track at those sorts of speeds, the one thing I most definitely would not be looking at would be the scenery - unless of course I'd lost the plot and was quietly sliding along the tarmac hoping that I was not about to lose most of my skin!

Do they still have traffic lights on the road which crosses Valley Airfield on Anglesey?

My Grandmother had an interesting incident there. Taking friends shopping to Bangor she was approaching the runway and the lights turned red. She ignored them much to the apprehension of her friends and was nearly sucked into the jetstream of a plane taking orf!

She wrote to the MOD demanding the pilot be reprimanded since she had "right of way"  eeek: Apparently she was of the opinion that he should have stopped... !

Needless to say her friends declined further invitations of lifts to Bangor.

Meanwhile, back on the topic. Someone told me yesterday that there is a web site to discover just how many particular models of your car are currently registered.
Not much interest to the casual onlooker, but I'd like to check my little racer out. Anyone know of the address? Can't find owt on google. ::)

No. Either 1.7 or 1.9. IIRC they were the only two diesel units available for the BX, and IIRC again, it was only the 1.7 that was offered with a turbo. rubschin:

To be honest it's because I am not interested in cars other than as a convenient means of getting me from where I am to where I want to be.
Like most people who have been to school I understand the basics of the internal combustion engine but frankly it does nothing for me.
As a kid I learned that there are certain things that "Chaps" talk about. Cars, Horse Racing, Football, are all examples of things that do not interest me personally but I maintain a watching brief over so that I can converse with those who wish to talk about them.
Having played Rugby & Cricket at school and in my RAF days Boxed and learned to Fence (sword not garden) I have more interest in those but am happy enough to chat about anything whilst in the Pub or Barber's Chair. Most people are not really interested in my personal hobbies so I tend to keep those to myself.

No ~ never killed anyone whilst fencing ~ not the done thing really ~ did break my blade on a naval chap once in an inter-service comp.  I carried on and drew blood but only because I didn't realise that I had broken it. Got disqualified anyway. evil:
Boxing came about because the Fencing and Boxing teams used to train together a lot of the time as much of the training is the same when you think about it. Anyway I was tall and light (in those days) so got talked into trying a bit of boxing. Did OK until I got involved in an inter-services evening with the Army. Little Scottish corporal beat the shite out of me so bad they stopped the fight halfway through the second round ~ unheard of in Inter-service matches as blood is what they come for.
I retired from boxing two days later when I "came round" in Sick Quarters and realised that I couldn't remember anything after the bell for the start of the first round..

It wasn't available through the company I checked with.

I stand corrected.  BUT... there was a French market 1.6. When I was in France the badge caused a lot of curiosity as they all said it was wrong.

The XM made Cardiff to Bayonne on ONE tankfull !!!  3 1/2 tanks to Alicante and back. (it had an auxilary tank) It was a wonderful motor.  Sorry to see it go.  sad24: There was nothing that wasn't fitted, it was my first experience of truly luxury level motoring.

The Picasso is great - except for one point.  The A/C controls are to the right of the dash, out of my reach when my other half is driving.  And she hasn't a clue how to set it so I freeze my butt off as we wobble down the road vainly fiddling with the buttons.  evil:

BTW.   I was surprised that nobody commented on the Leyland Marathon I slipped into the list.

No. 1 was nearest. (No. 2 is an Octopus insn't it?)  But it was a BRS special with a TL12 turbo intercooler lenthened chassis and all mod cons - Built specially for Middle East work with a double skin roof and aircon (and a 250 litre water tank), but they dropped the contract and flogged off the motors - It was a left-hooker too.  Because of the mods it made a standard rig a metre overlength, but nobody ever noticed...  ;)

Been given a Citroen C1 for the day, while our current crock of crap is in with a list of faults that would take nearly as long to read as 'War and Peace'.

Must say that it's a cracking little 'round town motor, and simplicity in itself with no useless frills to go wrong.
Sounds like a mini V6 with its three cylinders, and it's suprisingly perky too.

Noticed the road tax. ?35 p.a. eeek:

Cred not important to be honest. Reliable, capable of doing Surrey to Wales a couple of times a month. Moneywise, well not top line but reasonable. There isn't a terribly strict budget.

IMHO Citroen ~ best deals on new vehicles at the moment. Large or small they are cheapish to buy and run.
I have a Picasso ~ 1600 engine, carries five of us and best of all returns a good MPG. Has a flat boot (No Lip to lift things over) with loads of space and seats collapse to carry longer loads.

Some muppet has bought them new, taken the depreciation hit and then passed them on. My last was a repossession.

Buy at a few months old with reasonable mileage and they are far cheaper and you still get the manufacturer's warranty. Growler will confirm!

I bought a virtually new Golf for £4000 from an auction. 9000 on the clock. On the forecourts (new) at £11000, and that was years ago.

1. Don't but new
2. Don't buy second hand from dealers

Thats all well and good IF you know and are fully aware of what the pitfalls are, AND you know a bit about mowtas. You can strike it lucky, but you can come horribly unstuck at an auction.
The golden rule at auctions, is to ONLY buy a car that has come from a main stealer. If it doesn't say this on the description sheet normally stuck in the windscreen, walk away from it no matter how 'pretty' it looks.

How big a car do you want Wench?
Small medium or large? Hatchback, booted, estate, cabrolet, coupe, MPV, 4wd,Gti, diesel or petrol?

Take into consideration that WHEN Mr W passes his test, insurance must be taken into great consideration as he won't have any NCD. It will be expensive initially, but not as bad as a 17 yr old would pay.

Fiat Panda

My thoughts too tbh. Crackin car, and well respected in the trade. Fiats are 100% better than they were even 5 years ago.

Hyundai Getz with the balance of the 5 year manufactureres warranty worthy of a sniffin', and I think Kia are offering a 7 year warranty on their range now too. Picanto is quite sweet albeit a bit of an ugly face.

New Fiat 500 coming out in 2 months, beautiful but expensive for what it is, + join the waiting list.

Have a very close look at the Citroen C1/Peugeot 107/Toyota Aygo.
They are all made in the same factory which is a Toyota factory. Build quality is very good. Driven the C1 and was suprised just how good it was. The 3 cylinder1.0 litre engine is a gem and suprisingly perky, with phenominal economy....60mpg easily obtainable around town. Don't waste time looking at the diesel version. Little benefit for the extra 1000 quid.
Miniscual boot though, so transporting all your 'tat' around could be a problem if that's a requirement...back seat folds down in one piece on the cheaper model, but in two halves on the 'posh' one to give you loads of extra tat moving space. ;)

I'd say the C1, Panda, Picanto, Getz, or the Toyota Yaris. All obtainable new or fairly new for less than 7 grand.
C1 attracts the cheapest insurance i think. Group 1, and shop around well hard for that too. ;)

DON'T get sucked into the BMW Mini range trend setting tripe. Horrendous second hand prices, upwards of 6+k for an early one even, and many have been abused. New prices are just a bloody joke! happy001

Yes, I've heard all the jokes Snoopy.  lol:

It was my grandfather-in-law's, we inherited when he kicked the bucket. It had a dodgy head gasket which cause the radiator to overheat fairly regularly (disgraced itself in Reading town centre and driving over the south downs) and the gear box was wrecked. We replaced it with one of those new-fangled Felicias in due course, the garage "did us a favour" by not charging us to scrap it.

That's as may be, but they did in fact win their class on the RAC rally for many many years from the mid 70's to the early 90's IIRC, due to staggering reliability and being so robust, and also having the ability to get through mud ice and snow where other cars failed. Engine at the back over the driven wheels was the main reason for that, so don't knock them. noooo:

Ignorance is bliss in'it? ::)

Look here plums. I stood in various forest throughout the UK over 25+ years EVERY November watching the Daily Mirror/Lombard RAC rally, and the Skodas' where always a delight and suprise to watch.
1 particular moment over those years stood out, and that was in the mid 80's at 'The Woodyard' in Dalby forest. It's like a great big bowl arena, extremely popular with speccies, and the track leading out of it is moderately steep.
This particular November it was quite snowy, and VERY icy. The top lads negotiated the slope well good like, being mainly 4WD, but once the lower class cars arrived, all 2WD, the place almost became a car park, with loads cars being pushed by dozens of amused spectators...loads of cheering and jeering. The atmosphere was fantastic, with co drivers falling over helping to push their stricken cars, and cars sliding back down the hill.

The BIGGEST cheer however, was reserved for one of the Skoda Estelles that came plodding 'round the corner, and zig zagged it's way around the mayhem and promptly disappeared over the crest of the hill.
The roar, cheering and clapping was almost deafening from the 2/3000 + crowd! Fantastic stuff, and I think anyone that witnessed the Skoda of those days will agree, they were a crackin' little motor. happy088

Wenchy. When you're ready, do check out the deals from Citroen. They are always very aggresive with their marketing, and sometimes offer free insurance for the over 19's, which in Mr W's case would be a very strong factor to consider in his early driving days.
Do check out all the others too though. It's a buyers market at the moment. The stealers are falling over themselves to get your signature. happy088

The stealers are falling over themselves to get your signature. happy088

Ohh free insurance!!! Now that isn't something to be sneezed at!!

Some right owld 'wags' in 'ere ey Wenchy? ::)

Going back to the new v 2nd hand choice arguement.

New, for:
It's new, so you know it's history...well nearly. ::) Did you know that ALL new cars have usually been driven by up to approx 11-15 different people before you reach it? eeek:
Nice to know that no one has ever owned it too.
Breaks down? Under warranty, so no hefty repair bills, just the annoyance, but you'll usually get a courtesy car for free. Most manufacturers include 3 years RAC/AA/ Greenflag breakdown cover too.

New, against:
Price, and an immidiate big loss /depreciation as soon as they register it in your name.
The worry of it getting damaged. Some like me get paranoid, and end up parking it 3 miles away from the supermarket to avoid it getting whacked/scratched by other inconsiderate arses. Some like our Nick for instance, don't give a flying duck however...it's JUST a car.  ::)
Whatever.

2nd hand. For:

Price. Biggest slice of depreciation will have been suffered by the first owner. Most of it's early days problems will have/should have been sorted under warranty.
Balance of manufacturers warranty if the car is under 3 years old ( for most models, more with Hyundai and Kia to name two)

2nd hand. Against:

What has the car been through? How was it treated? Has it ever been damaged. Is its service history (essential) genuine?
HPI'ing it normally reveals any adverse history, and most if not all reputable garages would do this check as  a matter of course.
Always a good idea to ring the previous owner for a 'friendly chat' if you can obtain his/her details.

If it breaks down out of warranty, you are on your own. Beware of 2nd hand dealers warranties, as they normally have limits on how much you can claim per breakdown. READ the small print to discover WHAT exactly you are gettin'.

Buying privately you won't be offered a warranty, and you'll have no come back whatsoever if it was described reasonably accurately in the first place.

If for instance, the ECU ( brain for the car) coughs its clogs, you are quite often looking at a 4 figure sum to get it replaced. Lights coming on on the dashboard can sometimes be a quite expensive pain to rectify too..airbag, engine management etc. ::)

In a nutshell, buying new or very nearly new is the safest but most expensive option. 2nd hand has the financial benefits, but beware of how/where you buy it. Take an expert with you, and don't buy a car on your own. the salesman normally see wimmen as 'easy meat'. Not that I'm suggesting you are my little cherub. cloud9:

Of course you have always got the 'banger option'

Couple of hundred quid for a 10 year old Fiesta with a bit of tax and MOT, and if it breaks down or fails the next MOT, you simply weigh it in at the local scrappie, and probably get 50 snotters too! Lafin! lol: Just make sure you've got breakdown cover though, as you'll probably need it at some time during ownership.

EY?

Problee no. ::)

Well I HAVE. Had two so far, and have a Fabia Vrs in the fleet at the moment. By far the best car I've ever had. Totally brilliant in virtually every dept. happy088
Ask Degsy...problee when he gets back of his jollies...he's got one too...and luvs it! cloud9:

Yes, I test drove a Fabia and Octavia about five years ago, and there was nothing to choose between them and more expensive marques. Our Felicia was "nearly there" but still a bit agricultural, like a cheap Seat or an older VW.

Been out 'lookin' yet Wenchy?

Progress and 'short list' reports required please. I'm interested in the outcome of this. rubschin:

Get any old  pre 2000 diesel, and run it on up to 70% veggy oil in the summer, and 40% in the winter...as discussed elsewhere.

Apparently....you Citroen owners...ALL of the current range of Citroen diesels will run on a mix of up to 30 % bio diesel. This is always assuming it's available locally to you
I'll see if I can find the link about this.

Gorrit:

 http://www.worldcarfans.com/news.cfm/newsi...s-on-bio-diesel

Get. It doesn't werk. evil:

Try this: happy088

http://www.worldcarfans.com/2060807.003/Citroen

So after reading that, I assume you can put approx 4 gallons of bio in to a tankful of our gordons genuine rip off stuff?
80p a liter 1/2 a mile from here, and it's already got 50% ordinary diesel in it, so the equation in fact goes up to.....8 gallons thus saving you about 8 quid on a tankfull on the basis that you can buy it for 80p p.l.? rubschin:

Hmmmmmm..... Had a diesel last time (Vauxhall Zafira) but this time went for petrol. The additional cost of buying a diesel did not seem to be VFM when I did the sums on mileage gained versus additional cost of vehicle and additional cost of diesel as opposed to unleaded at the end of three years. Since getting the Citroen I haven't been far so any saving on mileage would not offset the additional costs with this vehicle either. I have had it 16 months and only done 2,700 miles. ~ That's agoraphobia for you. ::)
When I think I used to average 50K miles pa as a rep!

Diesel is still significantly cheaper than petrol in Cyprus – presumable reflecting the real value of the two. Both our cars are therefore oil burners...

Still, cooking oil is cheaper still…   rubschin:

You will have noticed that diesel is now dearer in the UK than petrol.

Indeed... I think the excuse was 'particulates' wasn't it? Obviously not serious enough a problem to ban the stuff but just dangerous enough to raise a few billions in revenue...  noooo:
