Title: Children and Food: Quantity question
Post by: Nick on September 05, 2007, 11:59:45 AM
One day's normal intake for The Boy (and he is not fat):

Breakfast: Large bowl of cereals, 4 slices of toast and marmalade/honey, Half pint milk

Lunch: Two large sandwiches (today cheese, ham and salad). A carrot with half a tub of houmous. One banana. Half a pint of cranberry juice

Evening: Salmon fillet, potatoes, salad. 2 plums. 2 yoghurts. Half pint milk. Still feeling peckish so cheese and biscuits with some grapes.

Snack before bed: Large sandwich, banana, juice, apple. 4 biscuits.

That's significantly more than I eat!

Is this normal? (SNoopy goes first)

WW2 air raid shelter in the basement ffs! eeek:

Surely with Captain Calamity that is an insurance requirement  point:

From what I have read of him on here it sounds like the boy is an extremely active soul so between that and the fact he is still growing I'd say his intake is probably normal.

Or as normal as things get in Castle Nick  eeek:

The shelter accommodates 55 people apparently, not that we have ever tested that claim.

Seal the entrance from your house, dig another one and with a bit of DIY work you could open a themed guest  house  eyes:

One day's normal intake for The Boy (and he is not fat):

Breakfast: Large bowl of cerelas, 4 slices of toast and marmalade/honey, Half pint milk

As Grumpmeister says considering The Boy's shenanigans and age that probably isn't far off. If he was sedentary in front of a pc for the majority of the day it probably would be but he isn't.

I assume Wenchy can calculate the calorific value....................

Also take into consideration the quality of the food, it isnt fat and sugar laden junk so even if his intake seems extreme, while he isnt putting on any weight he's probably far more healthy than his peers

I have to ask though Nick, what on earth is cerelas?  whistle:

I don't do calories, I do GI. Other than the amount of bread he is consuming I don't see anything wrong with it. And even then so long as it isn't plastic white bread it's all good stuff.

And what is GI? S'OK, looked it up.

And he has just asked me for some more lunch Banghead

That's about what our 9yo gets through on an average day. The 6yo eats a bit less, the 14yo would consider that lot a light snack! They do eat a f*ck of a lot more than we do but they are growing I guess.

An average week's shopping at the kennel includes 3kilos Bananas, 2 kilos Apples, 2 Kilos Oranges, 1 kilo Grapes, Punnet of Nectarines/peaches and 8 Kiwi Fruit and a large Honeydew Melon.
We also buy 6 loaves of bread + make 6 ourselves (some prefer shop sliced bread for their toast)
18 pots of Yoghurt, 3 kilos Carrots, 2 heads of Celery, sundry cucumbers, tomatoes, at least two lettuce, 1 kilo cheddar cheese, half kilo Edam or similar, 30 eggs. I cauliflower, two large heads of Broccoli, half kilo Onions, 2 Kilos pasta (various shapes including Spaghetti) one kilo Rice. Sundry fish, and Twenty fish fingers. 5 Kilos Potatoes
Meat is an unknown as brother is a butcher and simply restocks our freezer as it needs it.
Oh and all three have school lunches!!! eeek:

Then I wouldn't worry. To be fair unless they are sat in front of the computer/tv eating turkey twizzlers for dinner then I wouldn't be concerned.

That is reassuring. I worked out we get through 24 pints of milk a week. There are only three of us!

He is presently "watching TV". This involves having the TV on and leaping around the room, occasionally bouncing off a sofa. noooo:

We only use 9 pints of milk a week. None of them like milk much, Mrs S is allergic to it and I don't like it. I never eat cereals (however you spell it) and the children only have a little milk on theirs. Mrs S doesn't eat cereal either.
My breakfast is always Porridge (made with rolled oats and water) with half teaspoon of cinnamon on top. Good for the cholesterol ~ or so they tell me. We do seem to go through gallons of Orange and/or Apple juice.
And NO Children like seedy bread (in my experience that is something that one grows into liking)

But you would all like his life style, his money, his house in Henley on Thames and his farm in Spain. The men among you would quite fancy his wife too.
Jealousy I call it.

BTW  both of his cook books specialising in advice for using GI as a method of controlling weight were very good for someone with a heart condition and diabetes. They certainly helped me a lot.
