I remember this prog from the very beginning (sad I am really). Used to work shifts and so ended up watching this in the afternoons. Twas never the same after Matt and Dolly went, and the it was ruined when they got rid of the sheep.

"long time 'friend'" is the usual euphemism  in these cases.
