Title: Rearranging Deckchairs...
Post by: Barman on September 11, 2018, 10:04:53 AM
A large chunk of our village is on the move - about 60cm per year towards the sea...
Most days I walk down to the village on the main road that has a mahoosive concrete retaining wall at the side of it...
Mahoosive concrete retaining walls don't travel well and it has been tearing itself apart... the cracks get visibly bigger every day...
This was back in March... (https://s22.postimg.cc/4eslwqkz1/IMG_20180320_123009.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/4eslwqkz1/)
This is one I took yesterday - I could slide my hand through it... (https://s22.postimg.cc/4217qkaf1/IMG_20180908_130200.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/4217qkaf1/)
I've walked down there just now and there is a big 'Men at Work' sign up... Obviously no men actually at work but still, I wondered what they had been up to.
And I found that in order to stop thousands of tonnes of concrete tearing itself apart as it heads towards the beach...
...they have glued it together with mastic. facepalm: (https://s22.postimg.cc/h66s39a6l/IMG_20180911_122434.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/h66s39a6l/)

They need a Heath Robinson/Baldymort approach. Get load of bungee cords and glue/weld/nail them to either side of the crack along the top and side.

LL could make a fortune selling tickets for the 'Incredible Flying Baldymong' after you end up attaching all the cords to one side then try and pull them all tight at the same time before gluing them down... whistle:

Well it'll stop people sliding their hands through it
for a couple of weeks, then more mastic needed. rubschin: buy mastic futures

Well, it didn't last very long and the village council has now suggested that the road is too dangerous to drive down or even walk down... eeek:
...but the road can only be closed by Limassol District Council and of course holidays or whatever so it remains open... ::)
rubschin: not funny at all for those that lived in them
Wasn't there some row about the authorities promising to do something and then doing nothing?
Yes, it has been a bit of a farce...
They condemned two villas and forced the owners to move out... they then paid their rental for a short while but were stopped by the gubberment...
You can't get insurance for landslides here so if you are affected you are basically fucked...
...however, if it is a landslide then the gubberment must step in. But they won't agree it is a landslide even though the evidence and satellite surveys prove it.
Luckily, fally-down road is a gubberment road so hopefully when they are forced to close it they will have to acknowledge the landslide.
Sadly, I suspect somebody will need to be killed or seriously injured before anything happens... noooo:

No...
All the surveys show that the land slid about 10,000 years ago.
About 10,000 years later Pissouri started to be developed and some of the houses, roads and the cemetery were built on the slipped land.
The two house that were condemned were built over 30 years ago and the cemetery much earlier than that.
But then in 2012 the land started moving again. Nobody knows (or will acknowledge) why it started moving again but the surveys show that the water table has risen from -30m to -6m and is the probable cause...
So somebody needs to take the blame for over-development (there is no mains sewer system) causing water to be dumped into the land or one of the drainage systems installed recently...

Dodgy wall road is tearing itself to bits... noooo:
It is amazing that all those roads I've shown were re-surfaced in May when we were in NZ and all of the kerbs and pavements were re-laid and sealed (with mastic) in September.... eeek:

No, the power stations burn heavy oil on account of not being able to agree on burning (much cleaner) gas.... Therefore we have to pay millions to the EU in fines because pollution... ::)

Could that work? Pump out the water deposits and fill the voids with concrete in order to increase the ground strength. rubschin:

Our friends house is moving 60cm per year... she has had to have all the utilities (water, electricity, telephone) extended with 'loops' in the cables and pipes so they can keep up with the house...
...the good news is that she gets closer to the beach every day so the house must be increasing in value!

In a sane world they would surely start pumping water out like TODAY and see if it helps...
...but the pipes and stuff would apparently cost €20M - god knows why - so it isn't happening anytime soon... noooo:
Is there anyone in local or national government in Cyprus that could actually organise a piss up in a brewery?
noooo:
Given just how seismically active Cyprus is you'd think that even an idiot would be able to pull their head out of their arse and do something. If the ground strength is that compromised all it's going to take is one strong earthquake nearby for a catastrophe. noooo:

They closed the road! eeek:
Nah, not really... one of their signs says 'Road Closed' and the other says 'Roadworks'... one at each end of the road... ::)
Looks like the slippage broke a water pipe... and that they'll just replace the pavement with compacted gravel - will save time the next time it happens... ;)
And some more (https://photos.app.goo.gl/ygg1ZRMqwb4uZAJt8)...
With logic like this I'm surprised that the authorities haven't requisitioned a couple of barrels of your home brew to detonate and push the ground back together again.. noooo:

They dug up all the paving slabs a few weeks ago and replaced with gravel... But the road is moving so quickly that large gaps and cracks soon opened up in the gravel. The solution? Fill the gaps and cracks with more gravel and cover the lot with more mastic...

This is interesting... rubschin:
Just been on a 5Km walk around the village... The GPS is my watch is pretty accurate and can track when I am walking on different sides of the road, when I cross over, etc. (it has GPS and GLONASS receivers)...
When I walked down the fally-down hill it shows that I have left the road and walked across a field (in reality, it would be in thin air). Of course I haven't it is just that the road has moved so much since the map data was collected! eeek:
[serious]All of the roads I've taken pictures of down there used to be tarmac asphalt but have been ripped up and 'repaired' with cement concrete which to me is counter-intuitive as concrete is more rigid...
They've put some kind of plastic 'join' in the concrete down the centre of the road (and across it in some points) so that it breaks there... not that it has made the slightest bit of difference... [/serious]

As if to prove it, this is the gap that has opened up between the building (on the left) and the patio/perimeter wall that meets the road on the right... (https://i.postimg.cc/gnfYRfbY/IMG-20190315-121623.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/gnfYRfbY)
...and this is the gap between the perimeter wall leading to the road (left) and the parking area behind the apartments maisonettes on the right. (https://i.postimg.cc/4YVX1BXp/IMG-20190315-121639.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/4YVX1BXp)
And this is a driveway at the opposite end of the building looking from the road towards where the place is leaning backwards... (https://i.postimg.cc/B8347Hvk/IMG-20190315-121704.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/B8347Hvk)

And the gubberment is still denying that there is a problem... facepalm:
They have just decided not to compensate those worst affected (i.e. their houses are falling down and they've been evicted) on the basis that they must have used dodgy builders... noooo:
Meanwhile I have a cunning plan involving a convoy of slow moving traffic between the two motorway junctions adjacent to the village... A publicity stunt like... eveilgrin:

Prseumably the local media are covering this. Or are they in the pockets of the incompetent clowns who run the gubberment?
It has been in the local newspapers, TV and Radio... And on the BBC too. I believe they may have some contacts for the Daily Fail (the same journos that produced the article that Grumpy linked to earlier)...
Nothing seems to sway the gubberment tho...
I've begun to believe that they (gubberment) are hoping and praying for a huge earthquake to strike so they can blame everything on that and get disaster relief from the EU... noooo:

But yes, I reckon buying back at a penny in the Pound and making a football pitch is more likely... ;)

Not much to see yet but they have finally started to do something about the problem - albeit far too late for many.
Phase 1 is a multi-million €uro project to create a line of reinforced Cement Concrete piles at the top of the landslide to protect the rest of the village...
Phase 2 is errrrrr.... rubschin:

I'm not sure how deep they have to go to get to solid ground, I guess it varies across the landslip...?
I'll take some video when they really get stuck in so we can see how deep they go. They have two drills that are going to start at either end of the slip and meet in the middle as far as I can gather...

Doesn't sound much if the problem is horizontal slippage. They were about 10 feet for the piles we had for our extension but that's a vertical load through the piles, BIG difference when the land is trying to move.

When they did our last extension they concluded it had to be piled as they couldn't get concrete round the house for normal foundations. So 2 days of piling and what did they say? 'Now it's ready for your builder to get the concrete round to fill them' evil: It got sorted

I think they are agreed that it is a groundwater issue but cause and blame have not been settled...
The groundwater thing is complex - we don't have mains sewers in the village so all the waste water is dumped straight into the ground. Years ago a sewer system was supposed to be put in but certain sections of the community fought against it... ::)

Some official pictures from the site today - they are encasing the tops of the piles in a reinforced concrete wall...
Now I'm no structural engineer but I have this feeling all that'll do is delay the movement until enough force builds up for one almighty event.
I think the idea is that the land on the left of the wall (in the top picture) is already haaawwwaaaaayyyy and heading down hil - it is land that has 99% of the damage that I've taken pictures of...
So the wall is Phase #1 which is to stop the land on the right of the wall following its mate...
Phase #2 is supposedly to stop the land that is already on the move... Involves draining, more piling, etc. If that happens or if they just write it off as a bad loss is another matter... Shrugs:
