New Elf n Safety person at the Canal people has sent instruction on "keeping safe" to all staff and volunteers
This is "duty of care" arse covering at its finest ::)
If we are confronted by an irate/pissed/aggressive boater/passer by and threatened with physical violence the instruction is to say:
The Canal and River Trust does not expect its staff to tolerate violence or abuse. As you are being violent/abusive* I am now removing myself from this situation and intend to report you to my line manager."
*delete as appropriate
I must try that the next time I am on the wrong end of a fist/boathook/boot ::)

Effin ridiculous
What would it cost them to install a camera and a sign you could point to saying 'you are on camera, we prosecute all intimidation of our staff' ?
-
facepalm: Actually one guy, ex armed copper scared2: has "adopted" one lock and has installed a fake TV camera and just such a sign  Mind you, he is trained to kill scared2:

It's not a health and safety issue, it's a cheap approach to liability issue. Say that someone either hits Nick or pushes him into the canal causing an injury, any attempt at a compensation claim could be shot down by saying they have comprehensive training on how to remove themselves from any situation with an aggressive member of the public and that clearly this wasn't followed.
I've seen stuff like this for years as a way of dealing with the hyperactive litigation for any reason crap that spread here from America.

Trueish but a smart claimant would ask in court 'and your evidence this policy was fit for purpose was just what?' And 'when your staff expressed concern over the impracticality of this policy what did you do?'
-
I did say it was "duty of care" arse covering ::)

The problem is that they're actually doing nothing for your safety. Don't they realise that if you and your volunteer colleagues went out on strike it's not like you'd lose any wages?
-
AS usual the top echelon is out of touch
