Title: The great no weather mystery (solved)
Post by: Steve on March 10, 2020, 01:41:48 PM
This is a real Banghead
For a long time now we've had wireless weatheromenters of various forms. Started with a 1980s? Radio Shack thermometer but more recently have had 4 extra most measuring temperature, rain and wind
Well about a year ago the Radioshack one started losing its signal, changed batteries etc and eventually relocated it. Then the full weather station Mrs K got me for my 60th started to lose information. First wouldn't display rain, then no wind display and then no display of any wireless information even if I put base station and sensor transmitter next to each other. We took the base station to the tip, bye bye 60th birthday pressie
Then the Radio Shack original started going wrong again, then the two displays slaved of another set of sensors starting losing outside temperature, then wind. Finally the outside temperature one that projects temperature and time on the bedroom ceiling wouldn't find the external sensor or the radio time signal. Several days of changing sensor batteries etc no luck except in short bursts, the Radio Shack one even lost it's temperature display on the sensor
I found myself shouting it's like someone is jamming them all
So 3 O'Clock in the morning the penny dropped. Something was
The clues are all in the above. First person to spot it gets a virtual pint

Can't you just look out of the window like most people? rubschin:

New WiFi router or wireless devices...? rubschin:
Nope, it was ye olde Radio Shack transmitting sensor. Bastard thing, I prolly threw away a perfectly good base station (€120 + postage from Switzerland to replace)

You may want to put it through old Buckethead's Amazon link if it is still functional just to save his feelings like..
Ta looks good (esp for the price) but to be same as one we had it needs to be this one. And I want to avoid having to put another load of sensors out there
You may want to put it through old Buckethead's Amazon link if it is still functional just to save his feelings like..
Ordered
Seems there's a 50:50 chance it'll work with the old sensors
Friday 13th...? noooo:
In general I love Friday 13ths
(but ordered yesterday and arriving tomorrow)
You are either insane to tempt fate on his day or the Anti-Nick..... rubschin:
Nah, must have said this countless times: I was born on a Friday 13th (one of the few things I have in common with Old Trolborn) and I got engaged on a Friday 13th

It used to but since Nick stopped wearing the codpiece of calamity, tights of trauma and cape of cock ups because he thought it made him look daft there isn't much point now. whistle:

Well tempting as you make the role sound (it was well paid wasn't it) I have to confess that Nick and I have actually been in the same room and we didn't self extinguish each other's existence in a blinding flash of electro magnetic radiation

Need a Feyman diagram methinks. An anti Nick would be the same as a real Nick travelling backwards in time. So if true I'll be signing up here in 7 years time (7 years? I only popped in to see if you'd seen my Claws identity wind up at 'cough)

Ah but you are attributing actual scientific method to Nick's uncanny ability for chaos and cock ups. It's more likely that the Anti-Nick would be travelling in the same temporal direction but would have first appeared some time after Nick when the gubberation energies reached critical mass. rubschin:

Finally installed the sensors on the pole (what a bastard job that was trying to hold the ladder with one hand, manoeuvre the pole into the bracket with two more hands and tighten it all up with another hand rubschin:
Anyway all is working, thanks Meister for the suggestion
Gives us what we want: easy to read display of wind gust speeds so when we hear a real windy woo we can glance down an see what it was. Not that there's any at the moment
But can anyone spot the awkward design flaw? Clue: think electrical
And talking of windyometers anyone remember that one I broke and said the repair might last two days. No? Well anyway it's still working. You can just see the splint on the leg of the cup on the right

Build the weather station that has been in the back of the cupboard for years you say...? rubschin:
redface:
Did I ever say I didn't have cupboardware?
Actually I've got a working area in the garage half full of Scalextric and half full of things that are sort of broken a bit and I think I can fix (but of course never will)
if that Tracy Emin can get £thousands for an unmade bed I figure this should be worth a million

LL's BiL collects that older (pre Scalextric) stuff and restores them - is it Minix or something?
He has miles of it... Don't know how he finds the enthusiasm to stick with something like that for so long... Shrugs:

Had to google it: Scalex made by the Minimodels company
Scalextric was a huge part of my youth right up til went to Uni by which time I was building and racing the serious 1/24 slot cars using nitric acid as flux to solder stainless steel sheet for the chassis. Nearly 40 years later I got made redundant bought a load off eBay and promptly found another job. It went into 'storage'

Think that was clockwork cars but you couldn't race them. Scalextric and even more serious slot cars encompasses the healthy attitude to sport. It's not about the winning, it's not about the taking part it's all about beating people
This is the best pic I can find of the Eltham Models track where we raced. My girlfriend of the time didn't really understand - maybe that's why she chucked me cry:
You may want to put it through old Buckethead's Amazon link if it is still functional just to save his feelings like..
Ordered
Seems there's a 50:50 chance it'll work with the old sensors

Perhaps I got the wrong ones... They are 'lektrik and he rewinds the motors and everything! eeek:
But no, it isn't racing, there are cars in garages, a fire station, London buses, etc. There is even a little ferry... Can't remember how it was all controlled...
He also has a mahoosive teeny-tiny scale train layout and a big OO layout with 'Live Steam' models... Drool:
