Title: Xbox
Post by: Barman on July 07, 2021, 02:24:35 PM
Thinking of buying an Xbox...?

Not the latest all-singing-all-dancing Xbox Series X but a second-hand Xbox 360...  rubschin:

They are available cheap (€50 - €80) on ebay with games and all the accessories...

Or would an older Playstation be better?

Looking for something to waste time on while I am chair bound....

What thinks you Grumpy...?

PS I used to have an original Xbox in 2003 but I'm guessing things have moved on a long way since then!  lol:

Well I'll bow to Grump's view but here's my thoughts: I know what you mean as I get tempted every now and then but then I thinks 'cupboardware'

I've got a Wii that gathers dust and all sorts of action games on the iPhone I never use so just play Toon Blast way too much but it's free and doesn't have to dominate the room I'm in.

I sold my Xbox and my Wii... Just think a '360 might be good value for a few weeks before it retires to the cupboard...  whistle:

I used to have a 360 and it was a good rig, easy to fix when something went wrong as well. Although depending on how good a computer you have you could always move it to where you were going to set up the console and just get a controller for it. I'm running a mid gen i5 with an RX570 graphics card plugged into a tv and so far that's been more then enough to run pretty much everything coming out that I've tried without issue.

Either way I would check out xbox gamepass and try the months trial as it is only £1 and should give you access to a decent library of stuff to play although I'm not sure how much there would be for the 360.

Game wise for the 360 I'd recommend these having played them. With Skyrim and the Fallout games legendary or GOTY editions will also give you all the DLC content as well:

Skyrim
Fallout 3
Fallout New Vegas
Dead space
Assassins Creed Black Flag (Blackbucket rides again  whistle: )
Xcom: Enemy Unknown/Within
Red Dead Redemption
Batman Arhkam Asylum

Aside from Xcom and dead space they are all open world games so you can always just explore rather then follow the story. In Black Flag I'd stay away from the corners of the map until your ship is fully upgraded unless you like getting sunk................a lot.

I dumped my PC years ago...

I just have a couple of i7 laptops - which are reasonably specced (16Gb, SSD, etc.) but the display is obviously limited...

With the Xbox, I could permanently connect it to the 50" tellybox in The Day Care Room and conceal all of the cables*...

Check and see if gamepass is available for the 360 once you get set up, there is usually a trial offer of £1 for the first month which may keep you occupied for a while.

Okay, R6 Vegas2 is a decent tactical shooter. Assassins Creed 2 is well worth playing, especially if that version has the extra content as well.

Ok I've widened the list I gave earlier as well as giving you an idea of what each game is about.

Skyrim (especially with all the DLC) - Open World Fantasy Role Playing Game
Fallout 3 (especially with all the DLC) - Post Apocalyptic Open World Role Playing Game
Fallout New Vegas (especially with all the DLC) - Post Apocalyptic Open World Role Playing Game
Dead space 1 & 2 - Science Fiction Survival Horror
Assassins Creed Black Flag - Assassins and pirates. Plunder the seas with your own ship along side legends like Blackbeard Thumbs:
Xcom: Enemy Unknown/Within - Turn based strategy against alien invaders. Cryssalids are utter bastards.
Red Dead Redemption - Open World Wild West Role Playing Game. The zombie DLC was amusing as well.
GTA V - Open World modern criminal Role Playing Game. The online map can be both irritating as hell and great fun at the same time.
Batman Arkham Asylum - You are playing Batman, what more needs to be said  lol:
Fable 1, 2 & 3 - Quirky Fantasy Role Playing Games
Deus Ex Human Revolution - One of the all time greats. Distopian future shock Role Playing Game
Forza Motorsport 4 - Tinker with and drive some of the most desirable Fast cars on the planet
Borderlands 2 - If your three favorite things on the entire planet are guns, toilet humor, and min/maxing RPG stats, then Borderlands 2 is a dream come true
Portal - A puzzle game that will drive you around the bend. Actually get the Orange box and you get Portal, Half Life 1 and 2 and as well as a bunch of other games.
Bioshock - Strange twisted survival horror shooter

Possibly Destiny as well, depending on what kind of offer you get for the extra content.

The 360 does have built in anti piracy soft/hardware so your usual supplier of dodgy discs is probably not going to be any good in this case. The protection can also block games with the wrong region code in some cases.

I forgot about the Crysis series, a pretty good trilogy of science fiction shooters. The first game is still infamous as being so graphically overpowered the top end PC hardware available when it was first released wasn't good enough to run it at full spec.  lol:

I'm in 2 minds whether to recommend Far Cry 3 to you. It's a good game but it's seriously twisted in parts.

If you enjoy Assassins Creed 2 then AC Brotherhood and AC Revelations complete Ezio's story.

I hate to tell you this but assuming that there are still 11 year olds playing on the 360 they would have sunk so many hours into the games that compared to you they will be Godlike and will obliterate you before you even know they are there. That being said Call of Duty or one of the Halo games (Reach might be your best bet plus it has a good single player story and is the prequel to Halo), either those or Destiny if the PVP is still available but you would need to level up your character first.  whistle:

Excellent!  Thumbs:

Also, I need a game that I can pretend I haven't played before but then thrash an eleven year old....  redface:

I hate to tell you this but assuming that there are still 11 year olds playing on the 360 they would have sunk so many hours into the games that compared to you they will be Godlike and will obliterate you before you even know they are there. That being said Call of Duty or one of the Halo games (Reach might be your best bet plus it has a good single player story and is the prequel to Halo), either those or Destiny if the PVP is still available but you would need to level up your character first.  whistle:

No, she hasn't got an Xbox or anything but she does have a mobile phone...  rubschin:

I still want a pin ball machine but god knows where I'd put it (no unkind suggestions please)

Bah!

I want a pinball machine too...

Had plenty of room I  the the house but never saw any for sale (See Also: Bar Billiards Tables).

Now I don't have room there is a guy here that refurbishes and sells them on BookFace almost every week!  cussing:
Bet they go for a fortune

We've extended this house 4 times and each time I've thought 'that'll make room for a Scalextric track/pinball/pool table/bar billiards and somehow it never has.  Probably on balance a good thing but  cry:

It has to be a Wurlitzer, anything else is just tat.

But apart from it being an elephant in the room, sourcing content is an issue otherwise it's just the same 100 tracks and then there's maintenance.  Seems there's one guy in the South of England who both knows what he's doing and doesn't charge an arm and a leg.

Amazon Music played through the Telebox will do for me and I bet there's an XBox Jukebox App

Check and see if gamepass is available for the 360 once you get set up, there is usually a trial offer of £1 for the first month which may keep you occupied for a while.

Excellent!  Thumbs:

Also, I need a game that I can pretend I haven't played before but then thrash an eleven year old....  redface:

I still want a pin ball machine but god knows where I'd put it (no unkind suggestions please)

We've extended this house 4 times and each time I've thought 'that'll make room for a Scalextric track/pinball/pool table/bar billiards and somehow it never has.  Probably on balance a good thing but  cry:

COD WW2 has a decent single player story and the zombies games are usually amusing. I haven't tried playing stock COD multiplayer since the the first black ops game back in 2010 where some little sod was able to get me with a single blind shot from a pistol through 2 walls, across the cul de sac then through another 2 walls before hitting me in the head.

I've got Watchdogs 2 but I haven't got around to trying it just yet. The first one was an interesting concept but it felt a little underdeveloped.

When I need WiFi to a box (like my 3 PVRs and TV) I just use one of those Netgear WiFi extenders as they have an ethernet output and ~10Mbps  Also a 6 way switch helps

I did use one of those Sky equivalents of that official XBox one but they are shite.

A Googlemesh or BT disc is better but pricey

So what's the verdict so far?

- back on eBay it goes
- back in the cupboard it goes
- it's good fun at times
- who needs a better model this is wonderful
- Got to get the latest model
- So good, haven't eaten or washed for a week
- Have become a mere biological accessory to X-Box supreme ruler of the planet

The technology is amazing, gaming at 4K is incredible...  Thumbs:

Haven't played it too much yet, keep getting killed in Assassin's Creed and got stuck in the early stages of Tomb Raider. I'm not really used to that jump/swish/block/run stuff yet...  redface:

Looking forward to Red Dead Redemption arriving (probably Monday now evil:) - the reviews on-line look incredible.

Again, from YouTube reviews I can't see any reason to upgrade to a much more expensive Xbox S or X - although no doubt in time they'll produce some exclusive 'killer game' that requires one.

Overall, very pleased with what I've got for what I've paid.  Thumbs:

If memory serves holding down block and then hitting parry just before someone hits you when you are fighting in AC2 makes taking out the low/mid level fighters a lot easier. Failing that once you get the smoke bomb use that and then hidden blade the everyone attacking you while they are blind (Ezio is an assassin so forget Queensbury rules  eveilgrin: )
