Title: Tactless doctors
Post by: Nick on September 21, 2022, 01:32:42 PM
When I was first diagnosed with cancer in 2017 the doctor I saw said, "Not to worry, we will just take you bladder out".

Just?

At Nod's meeting yesterday the doctor was discussing treatment options and said that surgery carried a 10% risk of dying on the operating table, adding "But that is the least bad option as you won't know anything about it".

Worse still, there was a medical student in the room, there to learn how to talk to terminally ill patients!

Of course you can also get doctors so tactful that you're not sure if you've received bad news or not.

It happened to me, luckily my then wife, being a nurse, put me straight. It was something to worry about and take seriously.

Yes, we saw a nurse afterwards. She closed her door and kind of agreed with us.

My nurses have been fantastic and honest

Agree with both, I guess it is a difficult balance and nobody likes giving bad news...

Nurses have to deal with the consequences at the end of the day.
