Title: Motto for the UK
Post by: Uncle Mort on September 21, 2007, 09:00:31 PM
Quote
It's just three months since Mr Brown revealed that his own personal motto, borrowed from his old school, is "Usque conabor" which translates loosely as "I will try my utmost". And now he is said to want to want something similar for the UK, which could be for this country what "In God We Trust" is for the US, and "Libert?, ?galit?, fraternit?" is for France.

We already have one:

Dieu et mon droit ~ God and my right.

So why does he feel the need for a new one? I believe in neither God or the divine right of kings but as far as I'm concerned it's a good, traditional motto. leave it alone.

Given the state the government has driven this country into how about

"Abandon hope all ye who belong here"

The reason for it is quite simple Uncle?

Make an announcement like this and every single news service in the country will be out in the high streets sticking a microphone in the populaces collective face (ensuring a balanced ethnic mix of course) and asking what they think it should be?

While they are out there they can?t be asking the government embarrassing questions about the economy or the general state of the nation.

The whole Government is tilted toward Scotland anyway ~ why don't we change the National Anthem whilst we're at it. "Flower of Scotland" perhaps ..... or ..... "I Belong Tae Glasgae", "Donald Where's Yer Trousers?" ~ the list is endless. B@st@rds!  evil:

A fronte praecipitium a tergo lupi    Would be appropriate for the UK now,  if this is easier for you?

Canada nicked this one first, shame. A mari usque ad mare.

Uti, non abuti. Very apt.

Quid quid latine dictum sit, altum videtur. (snigger)

I thought Mr. Happy came out with the best one...

"Home to the McCanns"

It somehow manages to sum the place up.

Wife is Latin tutor ~ not me. She also speaks some French ~ but again not me.
If it ain't in English than leave me out ~ I can't be arsed to go to BabelFish which doesn't do Latin or Welsh anyway.
I can order beer in most languages as all barmen understand two fingers held under their noses and a nod towards the beer pump ~ I need no more..

Let me help:

A fronte praecipitium a tergo lupi "When it's raining at the front, it's muddy round the back."

A mari usque ad mare. "A husband who plays street music gets the horse"

Uti, non abuti "My nose is OK but not my bum"

Quid quid latine dictum sit, altum videtur. "For ?2 the Hispanic dancer will sit on your lap, for a bit extra you get a video"

In this giving, compassionate, caring society we live in i suggest our national motto should be:

"FUCK YOU FUCKFACE"

Easy to remember if nothing else.

I think I prefer yours to what I actually meant.

A fronte praecipitium a tergo lupi - A precipice in front, wolves behind (between a rock and a hard place)

A mari usque ad mare - From sea to sea (Motto of Canada)

Uti, non abuti - To use, not abuse   ( I was thinking of the government )

Quid quid latine dictum sit, altum videtur - Anything said in Latin sounds profound   ( redface: Sorry could not resist)

As for the other two. They were simply.

Twll d?n pob Sais! Down with the English! (literally ?an arsehole every Englishman?)   redface: Present company excepted.

Y Ddraig Goch ddyry gychwyn. The Red Dragon will show the way (slogan often accompanying the Red Dragon, symbol of Wales)

That was quite a long time ago. Have they? noooo:

The phrase proposed contained all that is best about British politics.

"Never do or say anything that can end up splattered all over your face."

After twenty two days in committee it was agreed that it was good - but too long.
So they eventually settled on the briefer, punchier version.

"Never do anything."
