Which is the best buy, what's the difference, and why is an ipod so expensive?
Asda has MP3's from about a tenner, but those ipod things seem to be from about 50 quid. confused:
Can i record my vinyl and cd's onto them, or has it all got to be done from this crock of crap? rubschin:
-
You do normally need a PC to load music onto an ipod or MP3 but there are now products on the market that claim you can play Vinyl, cassettes and CDs on them and download from them to an MP3 or ipod.
Both Mrs and Miss Snoopy have MP3s and are very happy with them. Why ipod should cost so much more I really don't know. But then they are Apple are they not and all Apple Mac stuff costs more than anything else that does essentially the same job.
Some people, of course, swear that Mac and ipod are far superior but then they said that about Betamax didn't they?
Whichever you go for is a matter of preference, depth of pocket and desire to willy wave I suspect.
-
I would've thought an MP3 player's quite adequate. I would have got one but my problem's compatibility as I've been using Macs since the late 80's (?) - being the industry standard. So it was an iPod Shuffle for me; small, dicreet and loads of space for my requirements.
On the vinyl / CD issue... CD's no problem but obviously via your PC, but vinyl would have to be digitised from analogue and you'd need extra software or kit for that. I've two programmes, Wire Tap Pro and Audacity that allow me to record from various sources.

Tell me about it ::) And what they cost back then amounted to a serious investment. That said the ones I've had have all been extremely robust, virus free and a joy to use smile:

One of my step-offspring installed the Itunes software on this PC for use with their Ipods. I ended up reformatting the PC. Further, I banned the installation of Itunes on any PC both here and at work.
A good quality MP3 player is fine and doesn't need invasive, expensive software to run it.

£290 ! eeek:
I am supposed to buy Mrs TG an MP3 player for Xmas. I hope she doesn't see that one!
-
All very informative, thanks, but what do you do to fill this MP 3 thing up with me favourite sounds? What's this 'software' that you talk about?
Can't I just bung a cd in the hole in the front of this heap of crap, and let it transfer the music, or is it soley for up/down/whatever loading stuff off the internet, and where do I get that from, and does it cost?
I'm confused.
Nowt new there then.

£290 surprised me as well. I paid £165 new from Amazon last November. The 'W' version looks good as does the 8MB version and they're cheaper.
Growler, the software is loaded on your PC and will organise and transfer files to your player when you connect it to the PC.
The MP3 players can't take CDs so you have to copy (rip) them onto your PC first. Then transfer then to the player. It's not a problem and a CD can be copied and transferred in minutes.
<part 2> no it doesn't do household chores but it can play videos, store your photos, voice record and it has a radio which I often listen to during my commute.

How do i 'rip' my cd's onto this thing then? Never done that before. confused:
Christ almighty, I've just shoved a CD belonging to Miss Growler into this thing, and pressed the 'rip' button, and it's copied into something/somewhere. Had to stop it p.d.q. as I dont know what it's doing.
Where's it 'ripped to, and have I deleted the track from her cd now? scared2:
If it has, I'm going to be in VERY deep shit with her. sad32:

Doesn't the price dictate how many 'tracks' it can hold? .25 minibites = 10 tracks, 1 monsterbite = your entire collection of CD's or summat?
I'm learning, I'm learning. ::)
Currently listening to this mcfly crap i'v shoved on here as an experiment. It needs deleting. Banghead
That's better, Growlers 'Coldplay' happy088

Absolutely correct the price does indeed indicate how many tracks you can get on it ..... but how many does one person need in their pocket FFS? 'Specially kids ~ the band they would die for today will have died by next week and they'll have moved on. Buy expensive and I guarantee they'll have it nicked.

No. It's for me for me holingdays next week.
This ancient portable tape player is a bugger to haul around, especially with 50 tapes of the 'sounds from the 60's'.
Eats the batteries too.
Don't like thse farting little ear plugs that come with these mp3 things though. noooo:
Wonder if my brilliant comfy crystal clear monster home hi fi headphones will plug into one? rubschin:

Yes but I only borrowed it to try out the headphones thingy ~ wouldn't be fair to stop her from making herself deaf if she wants to now would it. eveilgrin:

I bought this one for Mr Wench last Christmas. He is a techno numpty. This one allows you to put stuff on it without using a pc. You use cables to plug it into your music player of choice and it does it from there. Don't ask me how, I have no idea. I prefer to use the pc. It also has a radio which was essential for listening to sport. ::) Think he said it holds about 10 average sized albums.

Miss Snoopy's MP3 is a very basic one, given her by her Uncle, but it holds 150 tracks she tells me.
Mrs Snoopy's, which I bought at Argos for about £30 includes a radio and also a dictaphone (No jokes about why not use her finger like everyone else 'cos I just made it OK) .... Holds up to 300 tracks and can also take "podcasts from the radio" (whatever that means) and about an hour of dictation, without loss of any tracks recorded on it.

If you want it for your hols I recommend a set of noise cancelling headphones… they basically remove all the background noise on the ‘plane – engines, screaming kids wife, etc. and allow you to enjoy the music in silence.
Pick them up at Dixons in the airport or buy on-line if you have time…

I've seen this mentioned by someone on here in the past IIRC. rubschin:
Aren't they horrendously expensive...a 3 figure sum? eeek:

Even I own to one of these Growler my lad, and have mastered the 'CD ripping' business, so it must be easy.
I have a really cheap (£25 IIRC) Dixons 2 giggle bite one which hold all my favourites, with space to spare.
Like all personal audio things, earphones can detach one from the world around, and I suspect the noise-blocking ones even more so.
You may have guessed that I am not easily embarassed, but the sudden realisation that a group of people are staring hard at you can seriously spoil a 'private' sing-along with Gilbert and Sullivan. redface:
-
Apparently my new phone also houses an MP3 player, but I am a mere babe. It needs a special cabley thingy to join it to a computer or something like that, but I daren't go into a shop full of spotty youths and ask them for one in case they laugh redface:
-
Well I've just started 'ripping' some cd's, but trying to select certain tracks only.
The bloody thing WON'T stop though. It just carries on rippin' every useless track that i don't want.
What am i doin' wrong then? ::)

Let it carry on and then delete the ones you don't want.
I might mention that after ripping a CD you then need to convert the HUGE CD track into a very much smaller MP3 file.
Bottom line you can store tens of CD tracks against hundreds or even thousands of MP3.
Avoid iPods like the plague. also avoid white earphones. People think you have an iPod and will follow you home to nick it.
I agree with Uncle and place the Creative Zen at the head of the list. That said, my PDA cost £250 and does all that and computer stuff and sat-nav as well, with a few SD add-on cards of several gigabytes you can take ALL your music if you want. They usually have a docking station to charge them and exchange data with the computer and you can rig them to main self-powered speakers or bluetooth to your car stereo. good from my POV because with external SD cards you can mix-n-match and don't lose everything if it breaks or walks.
A domestic quality hi-fi uses .25" jacks Common Hi-Fi 3.5mm and PDA/Players usually 3.5mm or sometimes 2.5mm which is a pain. as you'd need two adaptors three inches long. eeek:
More technical stuff if required...
Certain Mobile phones do that too but are short on battery life.

toys gadgets that will be out of date inside of 6 months or you can buy something that will enable you to listen to some music. Your Call Big Fella!

Got one from Asda. £24. 2 monster bites.

Same as any other digital device ..... Save or delete options are available on all MP3s.

Which explains how The Boy lost all our pics of Canada whilst fiddling! evil:

Another reason why Mrs S and I tend to stick with our trusty old fashioned 35mm. I do have a digital camera (Minolta Dimage Z1 for the technically minded and the nosey) but the Praktica (Mrs S) and the Pentax (Mine) suit us very nicely thanks. The digital really only gets used for the magazine so that I can transfer pics to the printed page without the fag of scanning them.
