Title: Just who owns my laptop?
Post by: Uncle Mort on November 16, 2007, 10:10:50 AM
Just who owns my laptop, me or Bill Gates?

This morning Windows Vista chucks my daughter out of what she was working on and then proceeds to process updates. I couldn't see any option to stop the process as it was just displaying a 'please wait...' screen. Still doing it when we needed to set off and as not wishing to leave it running for the next 10 or so hours I had to pull the plug on it AND remove the battery.

Now I assume that I could have changed the update settings but this method must be the DEFAULT.

I downloaded itunes on to it for my daughter's ipod. That keeps wanting to keep updating and taking control of all audio as well.

Bloody Apple!

ITunes is a right bastard and no mistake. Avoid like the plague. I had to re-format my hard drive last time some bugger installed it AND re-download some tracks that were on the PC before the install that seemed to have decided they had become the personal property of Steve Jobs and his cronies. Arrogant bastard software companies.  Banghead

To be honest Mort if you have a copy of XP get vista off her laptop. With Microsofts track record it will be buggy as hell for a couple of years yet even without the aggravation of the update\security set up it has

Normally Mort, you can achieve a reset by pressing and holding the power key for several seconds. Then just put it away.

The only problem might be, if it was in the process of updating something critical, it might fail to boot next time.

I agree with you though, I'm avoiding Vista like the plague - from what I'm hearing it just about takes over the machine.

I did install a copy of vista onto my machine briefly once just to see if it was worth getting and as far as I could see its just a bimbo operating system. Looks good but does stupid things for no apparent reason and drains your resources like mad.

This is the first 'problem' I've had and I'm sure I can change the update settings to suit me, i.e. to ask before doing anything.

I too am avoiding Fista although I have a couple of customers that are happy with it.

I thought Mrs. Barman’s PC was going to need replacing the other day and buying Fista and a new copy of Office filled me with dread and horror – back to the linux project…

All OK, it reported a premature shut down of Windows but started up after that.

I've now told it not to automatically install updates.  happy088
