Title: Pissed Off Puppy
Post by: Snoopy on November 16, 2007, 12:18:04 PM
Sorry to arrive so late in the day. I have spent most of last evening and all of the morning since 6am trying to resolve my internet connectivity "issues". I have now un-installed the wireless net from the entire house (much moaning from the family) and have reinstalled on this PC only a dial up broadband connection. (https://www.virtual-pub.com/SMF/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.freesmileys.org%2Femo%2Fviolent002.gif&hash=2c2fae8ef0ee1e69f2e15ed9aa3398eb6d7d7ef8)

So why pissed off? 1) because a man was here yesterday to resolve these and other problems and everything worked fine until an hour after he left when it all just failed. 2) because having located all the necessary discs etc to un-install one and re-install t'other I could not make it work because I HAD LOST THE PIECE OF PAPER WITH THE FVCKING USER NAME AND PASSWORD ON IT! evil: evil: evil:

I have been searching desks, filing cabinets and shelves for this vital information whilst the PC has sat and smirked at me with a message saying "Access denied ... Wrong password or user name" (https://www.virtual-pub.com/SMF/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.freesmileys.org%2Femo%2Fviolent056.gif&hash=33bf0d1b1f2a203836de5ee028586e9c979c4494)

Eventually I swallowed my pride and begged my Internet provider to disclose the vital information to me ... which they did without a single security check on who I was  noooo: But at least it enabled me to best this bloody machine (https://www.virtual-pub.com/SMF/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.freesmileys.org%2Femo%2Fviolent057.gif&hash=78672d02b96650009f3c382e30b6cfe4df8f4ff9) I shall take up the issue of their lack of security later.

I hate computers in all their incarnations and even more I will kill the next youthful geek who tells me he knows how to solve my problems. He does not! He only thinks he does!!! (https://www.virtual-pub.com/SMF/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.freesmileys.org%2Femo%2Fviolent006.gif&hash=4292e0cdb5be85418bf28ef26522d17c9f84323c)

My geek is spending the weekend in Gloucester ~ which is why he is not hanging from his thumbs in my office right now. Should you happen across him forget the brakes and go straight for the accelerator.
He was supposed to be mending something else altogether and he spotted that my little internal network could be "piggy backed" by someone from outside ~ if they had the right equipment ~ as my "security measures" were, he claimed, insufficient. Just how many geeks are driving round North Wales with that equipment hoping to find an insecure net I don't know. Banghead
Anyway he said "I can fix that for you as well.... no cost" and tapped away at the keyboard for five minutes before sitting back looking satisfied ... almost post orgasmic, as they do. "There you go" he said "No-one will get into it now" ~ He was right ... even I could not get into it.

Someone get me a large ashtray full of Bishops Finger if you will ... in fact make it two.  evil:

2 that I know of not that long ago... redface: both laptops equipped to pick up any stray unprotected wi-fi signals. Proven time and time again by sitting outside different friends houses and using their connections.

So ~ is this an admission of what the courts have degreed is theft eh?  rubschin:

It is not theft if the resource is used with the owner's consent.

As to other 'unknown' networks the reason is usually to make the network owners aware of what is happening, in other instances the computer has automatically logged onto an unsecured network without bothering to mention it.

The commission of a crime requires 'Mens Rea' or motive or intent or at least knowledge of the illegal event.

Most people that have unsecured wireless networks are completely unaware of the possibility that they are being broadcast openly to the world at large.

If you doubt what I say, look up 'warchalking'

It has been argued that people that willfully deploy unsecured networks are in breach of the confidentiality clauses of their operating systems and other software used to support the network and the contents of various sites on the internet that have confidential access clauses in place.  It also displays willful neglect in allowing free access to unregistered users access to the internet and allied resources that are able to freely invoke and distribute malicious or destructive code onto the internet AND unaccountable access for terrorist or other nefarious uses.

If in doubt, consult the small print of your Internet providers confidentiality clauses that you agree to to access the internet.

Sums it up nicely ~ It is an offence.

As to my internet provider's agreement ~ well in the first place I have never signed one but I suppose that by using their service there is a implication of acceptance on my part ~ but as long as I take "reasonable precautions" then that should be sufficient. It is impossible to protect oneself against every gizmo dreamed up by geeks determined to infiltrate your security, be that on your PC or indeed your home. These people, who really love their toys and make any excuse to justify their use, are really sad ~ often spending more money to prove they can "do it" than any profit they can gain from their illegal activities.

Do re-read the OP and those that followed. I did have security measures in place, as recommended by all and sundry. These had been tested by the simple expedient of having a friend sit outside and inside my house with his lap-top trying to piggyback onto my system and he couldn't. The problem now encountered was caused by yet another geek who cannot do what he is employed to do but flies off on a "I know best" mission of his own which resulted in the complete refusal of the system to recognise and permit access to the various Lap-tops spread around the house.

Re-reading your post is not necessary.  I was addressing my comments to the automatic assumption that logging on to someone else's network is always an offence.

It is not quite so.  A degree of intent to wilfully appropriate the resource presented is required to be present and provable in order to justify a conviction.

I was referring to that point and not commenting on whether or not you had properly secured your network.

it does however, present the notion that, if it is unlawful to make use of an unsecured wireless network, then sitting on a wall reading a book with the light provided from a private dwelling after their failure to draw the curtains also be unlawful.  In both cases is is making use of a resource supplied and paid for by someone else - but discarded.

Enforcement of this accumulating minutiae could be one of the base reasons why the net of the police state is relentlessly drawing ever tighter. And also one of the base reasons for failing to address the reasoning of the mass of sometimes mindless legislation that is drowning us.

Three lap-tops all suddenly got locked out by the wireless router ~ for no apparent reason. Additionally another Geek, under the guise of "I know what I'm doing and this will be much better for you", had loaded some sh*t into my PC that I could not get rid of. Yes, Yes, I know ~ but the registry is somewhere I don't feel qualified to play. Anyway it sat there for 18 months, never used, using valuable memory and slowing me down.
Situation finally resolved by Geek#2 going into the registry and deleting the undeletable, in the process getting rid of Geek#1's "pirate-ware" that was stopping M/Soft allowing me upgrades. So now all is well. All lap-tops are recognised, though the reason for rejection is still unknown, all unwanted sh*t has been deleted, additional memory is being installed on Monday and instead of taking half an hour to open a programme I now have almost instant access again.
Hope that is technical enough for you .... the cost of Geek #1 was a lot of agro but no beer tokens changed hands. Cost of Geek#2 is a couple of free ads in the magazine.

I love trading  cloud9: Soo much better than money and NO tax.

Now I have mucho work to do so forgive me if I only pop in and out over the next couple of days.

Thanks Snoopy.

And Wenchy ~  it was funny.

Oh ~ I forgot to mention ~ one major source of irritation has been that My PC and the three lap tops were all using various forms of word processing, making life difficult at times .... like when "correcting" daughters homework handed to me on a disk. All are now operating on XP Home Edition and using Office Suite 2003 whereas before one was on Office Suite 2003, one was only using the installed sh*t known as Works and had no other (Word/Excel or Powerpoint) one had a pirated copy of Office Suite which M/soft spotted and would not upgrade and one was using Word 97 which I had put in as it too only had Works as a WP package and there was a lot of "I can't open your ..... " etc. So now the whole of Snoopy Towers sings to the same hymn sheet .... except the two ancient PCs in the boys rooms and they are running on Windows 97 and Windows 2000 .... but have no internet access 'cos the boys are too young we feel to have such without supervision and they only want to play games and use their, now ancient, Dorling Kindersly (sp?) reading/writing/maths CDRs, Lego build a virtual railway game etc.
