Another week, another disaster... noooo:
Psychiatrists say a decision to close a unit which offers unique help to people with complex mental health problems will harm vulnerable patients.
The NHS trust which has ordered the closure says it made the decision "with great sadness".

Great sadness my arse! cussing:
How long before a mental kills someone because of this closure? Banghead

The Henderson is fairly near to me and the local papers are having a field day with this. There used to be other institutions nearby but these were knocked and prisons built. Wonder what the odds are that this land will also be sold.
Places like Cane Hill and Netherne have been sold off for development - none of that money has been used to build new facilities.

The lady in charge of the place gave a good interview on R4 this morning – she said they did spend millions on new facilities… and then shut them down. Unfortunately thay are shutting the psychiatric ward/unit (can't remember its name) at Sutton General (almost next door to the Henderson) - there will be no local facilities left at this rate.

I used to live near there as well, a bit further north towards Sutton, by Ventor Road.
Always remember the strange hospitals/institutions over the other side of Banstead Downs as well.

Rampton?
Never knew their names. Sometimes when we were on the Downs the police would come along and tell us to go home - someone had escaped.
Long gone now, prisons in thier place.
-
There used to be one round the back of Epsom years ago too. An escaped loon ended up in my Mum's garden when she was little.

Your Dad?

point:
I'll have to tell my Mum that one!

It would explain a lot. rubschin:

They were known generally as "Banstead Loony Bin". I was it very often - my mum used to work there in the admissions department.
Most of the patients were of the "pleasantly confused" variety with only a handful ever of the more violent type.

Ten years under the patio and anybody would go off.

Having been in love with Mrs S#1 I have to admit that I still am. I don't think that one can ever stop being in love BUT many who think they are in love and then profess loathing etc when it all goes wrong were probably infatuated or simply in love with the idea of being in love ~ neither of which is a good basis for marriage. We are, however, capable of loving more than once in a lifetime ...... fortunately.
What I have also discovered is that one can live equally well without love as with it.
I shall leave you to consider the Snoopy philosophy of relationships.

Returing to topic I see today that the Women's Institute is putting its not inconsiderable lobbying weight behind a campaign to bring back "Asylums" for the mentally illl. They say "Don't build new prisons, build new secure asylums and transfer the mentally ill from prison to where they may get help" I have to say they are right. Look at the figures ~ Prison is now the default option for those with uncontrolled mental problems and that is wrong. The WI solution would, of course, solve the prison over-crowding issue as well.

Yes, "Wormwood Scrubs home for the bewildered" sounds much nicer.
