So the hot news from the High Street is that "Traders" say it's not such a bad Christmas after all as people are "flocking to snap up bargains in the Sales where prices are reduced by as much as 70%".
I dunno 'bout you lot but to me this demonstrates the rank profiteering that took place in the weeks and days leading up to Christmas.
And the Wii shortage? There are, I am told, "hundreds on ebay at up to three times the retail price". My search revealed 1082 items offered under the heading Nintendo Wii consoles
I know New Year sales are a traditional way of clearing out surplus stock (AKA Misscalculations by the buying department) but with each passing year I feel more and more that someone is taking the p*ss ~ or am I just getting cynical in my old age? evil:
Wenchy, Miss D, Pussy Galore and LL ~ being female ~ are excused from this thread as we all know that they will happily spend £500 in a sale and justify it as "A bargain, that SAVED me £150" when, in fact, it was something that they would never normally have bought and certainly do not need. We, the men here, accept that this is a genetic malfunction that they cannot help. surrender:

I’ve always thought that about ‘sales’ – it really does show just how much profit they are making on all that shite. Mind you, given that most of the designer clothes and other such crap are made by Chinese slave workers on 2p every six months they still make a vast amount…
The MD of John Lewis was on the wireless this morning – he says they had a good crimble and sold (among other things of course) seven ipods every minute (was that right? rubschin: ). The electronics, games, technology market is truly a staggering thing… noooo:

Hear, hear! Mrs TMR fervently tried to persuade me to go Next with her as "we will save a fortune". I reminded her that we don't need any more clothes - in fact we have just given loads to the local charity shops - there was a bit of mumbling with the words "miserable sod" thrown in a few times and then she agreed that we would be better offf spending the vouchers on things that we actually need...http://www.iwantoneofthose.com/paintball-panzer/index.html

Sorry Snoops - my connectivity still is extremely slow at work and, being a bit lazy, only open an internet session for the Saloon, Snug and Computer Room. Unreserved apologies.

Nuffink. It's still Christmas here for about another 10 days.

I don't need to be excused from this thread. angry041: I don't do SALES, at all ever. I don't do spending large amounts of money on rubbish I do not need. I guess I may be a tad unusual, but I don't enjoy any kind of shopping at all.

Such devotion to duty is admirable ~ specially as you say they are about to make you redundant. eeek:

The office is at about one third capacity - so only 100 fu*kwit users to look after. It is a haven of peace and I can do all the little jobs that I have been putting off for ages. Plus, "hours as required"...hence about 30 minutes to go...

Salaried or Enhanced rates for "holiday" working?

Salaried or Enhanced rates for "holiday" working?
Salaried, but enhanced rates due to me being allowed to choose the hours I do eyes: Which amount to about four, for the day.

SALES? Code word for lies! Why cue up at Next for a 5am opening, the same 'sale' shite arrives daily from the warehouse. In the old days, when i wasn't born, sales were just that - surplus stock that needed shifting. Now it's just shite that was over-priced in the first instance that they are lucky to sell at -70%. Actually JJB is 90% off!
As we're all friends here, i work for the largest catalogue company in the UK, and i know a thing or two about sales. We have had our best December in 15 years, why, because people are running out of credit everywhere else. As for the sale, you know the xmas surplus, the brochures were printed mid-october.
Ipods selling like hotcakes i can easily believe. How much of this shite can people really need?

You just don't get it eh !!!!
It really isn't about needing anything but it's about having something 'new'. Do you not get bored with wearing the same old things all the time??? A girl always needs options - and that is not the chocolate drink. But choice is vital 8)

Talking of bargains, A magazine is now offering a build your own steam engine. This is a weekly, piece-by-piece, build-your-own model of the 1928 Flying Scotsman.
The first issue with the first parts is only 50 pence! What a bloody bargain!
But buyer beware. Because after that first issue, you’ll be charged £2.99 for the second one, and then – hold your breath - £4.99 for the subsequent 123 parts. Yes, 123 parts. Now even I can have a dabble on the calculator and work our that that adds up to £617.26, not to mention 2.4 years of your life. That’s almost enough to buy a first class return to London.
How fast does it go? Err … it doesn’t. If you want an electric motor to make it go, then the piratical publishers will sell you one at a later date at a “special price”.
Now I’ve had a look on this interweb thingy and it seems that Hornby, a damn fine British company that deserves our support, will sell you a Flying Scotsman train set with passenger coaches and track for just £120. The engine on its own costs just £49.99.
Memsahib GOS says I can have one for Christmas.. I can hardly wait...

But that is made in China, not by honest British labour on your kitchen table. ::)

If we relied on original thought this would be a damned thin board.
I say Thanks GOS for bring it to our attention and Thanks TMR who clearly devours Barry's every word for letting us in on his "little secret"
Frankly I don't give a toss where the information comes from ~ my lad is very happy with his Hornby set and sometimes even allows me play with it.

TBH a similar moan appeared on GOM a couple of years ago. "Part Works" are a known rip-off and complaints about them abound.

It's a damned thin board anyway.
Nothing wrong with using other people's words as long as they are acknowledged.

Plagiarism is the use of an unattributed source
Research is the unattributed use of many sources
Let's be charitable shall we.

Fair points all round. Some of the diatribes I pen are hugely influenced by things I have read elesewhere, I just change them to suit the circumstances I am detailing. In fact, I think myself and Mr Beelzebub share some sort of telepathy as I wrote a rant at work and sent it to a few (select) users - not long after, the great Barry wrote words in a similar vein. Perhaps we all just get the same bile, over the same subject, at the same time.
But, I suppose, this is what happens when you actually take time to look at the news, analyse it and spell it out to people in words and with humour that keep their attention.
-
It's a damned thin board anyway.
I often find it quite thick.

I certainly seem to have put the cat amongst the pigeons with that post. To be absolutely honest it was my intention to introduce it as being from another site, but for some reason that did not happen. It was not my intention to mislead anyone on here. therefore I apologise unreservedly.
