Title: German town faces V-2 criticism
Post by: Barman on February 07, 2008, 07:29:26 AM
Quote from: BBc Web Shite
A town in Germany is facing criticism for its decision to name a local school after a pioneer of the V-2 rocket.

Klaus Riedel, who helped develop the World War II missile, lived in Bernstadt auf dem Eigen in the eastern region of Saxony.

The point is whether Klaus Riedel, or indeed Wernher von Braun and the other rocket specialists can really be considered guilty of causing the 20,000 deaths at the Mittelbau-Dora concentration camps (which supplied slave labour to the V2 factory) Did they know? Did every German know what was being done in thier name? And if they did what could or should thay have done?

Certainly von Braun was snapped up the Americans after the war and if Riedel hadn't died he would have worked for the Americans as well.

Riedel has a crater on the moon named after him for his pre-war rocket research so why not a school?
