Helen Mirren and Jeremy Irons in 210 minutes of stunning acting, dialogue and cinematic excellence!
Helen Mirren plays Elizabeth I in the two-part Channel 4 drama, written by Bafta award-winning screenwriter and acclaimed novelist Nigel Williams (The Wimbledon Poisoner, Bertie and Elizabeth, Uncle Adolf). The drama portrays ?The Virgin Queen? in her later years, exposing the conflict between her sense of duty and the instincts of her heart, her doomed affair with the Earl of Essex and the struggles of a powerful and independent woman battling to survive in a male dominated world.
I think this was probably on the telly (it is a Channel 4 thing) but I bought the DVD and watched it the other evening. Over three-and-a-half hours long but I could have watched another couple of hours of it ? wonderful. Well worthy of the 9 Emmy and 3 Golden Globe awards that it apparently won.
Even if you don?t enjoy historical movies (I don?t normally) you can?t fail to be entranced by the brilliant acting and fast paced storyline. The only tiny criticism I could level against it was some of the CGI background images were a little weak by modern movie standards.

The Mirren woman does have the distinction of having played both Elizabeth's I and II ... oh dear, I feel a Trivia Corner might be imminent redface:

Ok, let's go for The Queen as movie of the month... May that is...
Far too razzled tonight to give an opinion of any substance (blame Olga and her ilk) but if memory serves correctly standing her ground to the Bliar was worth watching. Contrarilily mind, I enjoyed watching Bliar set to with Campbell in the final days of the episode. Ok, a docudrama at best but gripping whilst it lasted.
