Title: New BlackBerry
Post by: The Moan Ranger on June 09, 2008, 06:34:18 PM
In view of my work situation and this august forum, I have a free upgrade.

I should get it on Wednesday and then will spend hours configuring it to suit.

User thoughts to follow.

Oh, and it is cheaper than the current phone.

Which model?

I recommend the Blackberry Curve to users at work, sometimes a broker will want the Pearl but I try to disuade them as the keypad is too small.

I am considering one of these. I have discovered that if I am away from my email etc for more than a couple of hours I get very antsy!  redface:

Is this a typo or another young-persons term with which we silver surfers need to be made familiar?

Antsy

Restless or impatient; fidgety: The long wait made the children antsy.
Nervous; apprehensive: “Camps got shot up all the time, but if there wasn't a shoot-up, they'd get antsy” (Harper's).

To have ants in one's pants "be nervous and fidgety" is from 1939; antsy "agitated, impatient" (1838) embodies the same notion.

"Pan-iced" is a cooking term related to covering a cake with melted chocolate and icing sugar.

The naming of techno gadgetry after soft fruits, indeed any fruits (I have in my possession various Apples  ::)) always called for a bit of a  ::) if not a  whacky115

When Hutchison Whampoa (sp?) sought to get into the mobile network in the UK they came up with ... Rabbit  eeek:.  I know; I was actually featured in one of the "on pack" pics. The whole thing came to nought but placed them well to obtain licence and market share for their big project...

Its not just the mobile networks though. If you look at some of the phone manufacturers such as HTC, the names they give their handsets are actually bizarre. According to O2 I own an XDA IIs, but f you look on the HTC site its a blue angel. I'm half convinced that they just have a sack filled with pirces of paper with random words written on them and as soon as they come up with a new product they reach in and pick one out at random.

Would that it was that simple. Corporate and product branding is big business and they spend a fortune on getting the "right" name for their products.

Wallabee, Himalaya, Blue Angel? I know corproate branding is worth a lot but they seem bizarre names for PDA's given that the people most likely to purchase them are techies and gadget nuts.
Title: Re: New BlackBerry
Post by: Snoopy on June 10, 2008, 05:38:42 PM
Problem is that so many names have already been registered that they have to keep finding more and more. They then run the various ideas through focus groups and all sorts of other trials to see which gets the desired response. Often they do not tell the people in the test groups what they are naming but rather ask which names/words make them feel "warm" or "comfortable" and which make them "shudder" or feel "cold", which they find "attractive" and which "repellant" and so on until they can go to the client and say "The best response is for Arsehole" and thus another product is named.

The life cycle of TMR's new Blackberry

Arrives at TMR's
TMR plugs in to charge
Looks at manual
Chucks manual away (I'm a bloke I dont do the manual thing)
Blackberry dies as a result of random button pressing bricking it
Blackberry sent back as still under guarrantee
New one arrives

Repeat until guarrantee runs out  whistle:

Then I need to put the new SIM in the old phone to copy across all my numbers. Then that, in theory, should get me up and running!

They weren't meant to - they are simple text messages and the point is, for the simpletons with their Simple Message Forum is that I can now post two messages simultaneously.

OK?!

How do you spell 'whoopy do'?  rubschin:

Still no joy - all aspects are now displayed in a more a "Winfile" style. Which is good for us oldies!

We'll have to wait for BM to pluck up courage and do the upgrade then.

Ok. Until then, I shall have to put up written emoticons and rely on the good nature of the mods to put them in place. (Smiley)

I am now all "BlackBerried" up and so far I have to say I am impressed (apart from the emoticons issue).

I had a few niggles getting my personal e-mail sorted and the Bluetoooth connectivity isn't as logical as it could be, but other than that - pretty damn good.

Wenchy, you have to get yourself one of these!

And the camera - a "mere" 2.0 megapixels is very good too - although doubtless the crystal clear screen helps.

Battery life wise - I charged it on Friday morning and by this morning it was down to 40%. Not bad considering I've been fiddling with it (the BlackBerry...) most of the weekend. I have also altered a few settings (like "Screen Brilliance") which should reduce power requirements.

I agree - but it's handy to have for those spontaneous moments where you may not have your "proper" camera to hand.

I was mucking about with the BB yesterday and connected to the realpub's Wi-Fi. All well and good.

Thought no more of it and toddled off home - to be awoken at midnight by the BB issuing its "battery low" warning. So, from fully charged to flat in ten hours...

I have learnt a lesson.

Yes Grumpmeister - I mistakenly thought that once out of range it will simply revert to standard, but no - it keeps on trying to connect to any signal it can find.

Still, isn't it good to run the battery right down now and then? Or summat like that?

Whenever I have had a battery go duff on me that is the story they trot out. "Batteries have a memory and you need to fully discharge them every so often"
Utter bollox. It's a fvcking lithium cell ~ it cannot think, it cannot reason and it certainly cannot remember.
Basically battery technology lags a long way behind the applications we wish to put them to.
