This is a long shot but are there any members here who are ex navy? I remember someone making this coffee a while back and it tasted incredible but I lost the recipie.
Before anyone makes a comment its so names as the boiler workers on the old naval ships who brewed and drank this stuff were blackened from the smoke and oil in the boiler room.

Sorry ~ can't help. Don't know any stokers these days whistle:

My old fella was a Navy man and he used to drink his coffee black with salt in it, he used to call it Black Gang Coffee
no shit !!
took me back..happy memories of my old man

I forgot to mention he was a stoker, served on HMS Chequers, escort the ships repatriating the Jews at the end of the war

That would have been the stuff Berek. As far as I can remember was a blend of a mild coffee and a ridiculous strength dark one with a little salt added to the ground coffee as its mixed.
If memory serves its 6 measures of each ground coffee and 1/3 measure of salt but I'm not sure if I've got the right amount of salt.
In case anyone is now thinking that Bereks old man and I are barking the salt enhances the flavour without bringing out the bitterness.

"Black Gang coffee is a mixture of Dark Coffee and a Light to Medium Coffee with a twinge of salt. I use Folders Gourmet Supreme blend, and Folgers Breakfast Blend. Mix 6 cups of each, in to a 3rd container (I suggest a empty coffee can, heh) then add 1/3rd cup of salt.
Now some folks ask, "Why the Salt?"
Couple of reasons for it.
First off salt is a natural water softner. The result, provided you don't add so much that your coffee tastest like the Atlantic (my ex-wife once tried to make this coffee for me. My first sip from my cup and I thought I was trying to drink the Great Salt Lakes of Utah. After that she left the cofee making to me), is your coffee is less bitter. So you can have a stronger coffee, without the bitterness.
The other reason is to get a little salt in your system. If you drink a lot of coffee, its not really a bad thing, because since coffee has caffiene, although made with water, it can and will dehydrate you. Ever heard about Salt and water retention? Thats the reason for both of the above.
Of course they didnt know any of that back in 1800-and-gawd-knows-when. They just knew they needed salt to sweat"
