Oh Gawd! Two solid weeks of the unremitting "Running, Jumping, Throwing Show". Every channel, every news broadcast, every newspaper, will be full of it. I could do without it frankly. angry041:

Yup!

Might be different if only the Brits could win something but we seem to be pleased with ourselves as worthy failures.
Even when we do get in the top three at anything you can bet your bottom dollar that our representative will be "borrowed" from the West Indies or somewhere similar and then turn out to be a drug cheat.

So, that'll be just be me and Uncle watching the prowess of the beach volleyball teams then  eyes:

I look forward to the opening ceremony which will probably be a spectacle of Imperial proportions, and the architecture of the place looks fantastic. The 'China Design Now' exhibition at the V&A was an appetising foretaste.

Oh, and there's some sporty stuff too

Quote
Skeet was invented by Charles Davies, an avid grouse hunter, in 1915 as a sport called Clock Shooting. The original course was a circle with a radius of 25 yards with its circumference marked off like the face of a clock and a trap set at the 12 o’clock position. The practice of shooting from all directions had to cease, however, when a chicken farm started next door.

I see the government doesn't believe in "it's the taking part that counts" either:

BBC Link (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/olympics/team_gb/7534962.stm)

Sports minister Gerry Sutcliffe has told the BBC "it is vital" that Team GB reaches the target of 41 medals from the Beijing Olympics.
"That is a serious target," said Sutcliffe. "We want it to be achieved."

What is it about this government and 'targets'?

One attempted murder ~ committed to Broadmoor for life for the attempted murder of his mother and sister with a hammer. Many many cases of a race between the Vicar and the Midwife of course, the odd embezzlement, a Titanic Survivor, a Boer War "Scout" and a sailor who drowned when drunk by falling off the gangplank as he returned to his ship in Dover. All good fun to research but I still get upset about the infant deaths that were such a way of life in Victorian days.

Wow. Well, just IMHO obviously... absolutely, stunningly, breathtakingly amazing. What a show! Too many highlights really but really stunned by the interpretation of the invention of movable type ~ a few hundred years before Guttenburg, all the Confucian stuff, 2,008 bods in a choreographed demo of tai chi, flying bodies and the final lighting of the torch! Nothing less from the director of Hero and House of the Flying Daggers  8)

That many countries filing in became tedious but some amusing anecdotes and trivia; if there's any country that can do fireworks it's the Chinese!  eeek:

How do we follow that? We don't; we can't; it'll be a different world in four years time and hopefully we'll produce something credible, applaudable and appropriate  shrugs:

Meanwhile, out with the starting gun  happy088

I fear that our attempt will involve some of our "world famous" architects (Rogers & Co), designers (Conran & co) and will end up being done by an imported specialist who will make the whole thing look as though it was built by Lawrence Llewellyn Bowen and Tracy Emin out of MDF and old knickers. I am willing to lay money on it involving some sort of representation of a "London" bus, Beefeaters and old ruins. Mind you the Chinese managed an old ruin or two among their dignitaries.
It will end in tears before bedtime ~ you mark my words.

I see that after two days of competition Team GB have yet to trouble the judges  ::)

Quote
Beijing 2008 Medal Table

1    CHN    3    1    0    4
2    USA    2    2    4    8
3    KOR    2    1    0    3
4    AUS    1    0    1    2
4    NED    1    0    1    2
6    ROU    1    0    0    1
6    ESP    1    0    0    1
6    CZE    1    0    0    1
9    RUS    0    2    0    2
10    ITA    0    1    0    1

BUT the really good news is that:
Quote
Britain's eventing team are poised to strike for Olympic medals after Mary King and Call Again Cavalier, the last to go for them, produced a dressage test that left the team lying a close fourth and themselves individually ninth going in to the cross-country.

Until, that is, you read on to discover that there are still two rounds of show-jumping and the cross country to go. In other words out of the three day eventing they have only had day one. Talk about putting the best gloss on a dismal showing so far.  evil:

Yes... amazing how the commentary changed from 'medal hope' to 'flop' over a few hours...  noooo:

Source = http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/display.var.2423108.0.diver_blake_hits_back_at_teen_partner_tom_daley.php

SOUTHAMPTON diver Blake Aldridge hit back at teenage Olympic partner Tom Daley after the pair had a row moments before their final dive in the 10m synchronised final.
Following the dive, which saw the pair come last out of the eight finalists, Aldridge, 12 years older than 14-year-old Daley, blamed the teenager's nerves for their poor showing.
He revealed that Daley had taken offence to Aldridge speaking to his mother on the telephone before their last dive.
He said: "'There was a little incident but it is an Olympic Games, you are in a different world and people are going to do things differently.
"He had a pop at me before the last dive.
"I saw my mum in the audience and I asked her to give me a call and Tom went to me 'Why are you on the phone? We're still in the competition and we've got another dive to do'.
"That's just Thomas - he's over-nervous.
"Thomas should not be worrying about what I'm doing but he was worrying about everyone and everything and that to me is really the sole reason why he didn't perform.
"We were out of character, Tom was nervous and that's what happens.
"Certainly not so much for me, I'm a little bit older than Tom so I can take things on the chin a bit easier."
Daley, Britain's youngest Olympian for nearly 50 years, said competing in the Olympics had been a good experience but that he was disappointed with his performance.
China took gold in the event, with Germany finishing with silver and Russia bronze.

OK, the young lad should have been more focussed and shouldn't have had the phone with him, but if his idea of "taking it on the chin" is to go running to the media shouting "it's all his fault" he has a few things to learn

We seem to have gained a couple more medals in the Horse Riding events and a silver for cycling. Am I being churlish but should the equestrian medals not be awarded to the horse rather than the passenger?

This is interesting: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121858438123734937.html?mod=googlenews_wsj

It seems that the Chinese obsession with secrecy is having an effect on the numbers of visitors to sponsored stands and that some sponsors may well decide enough is enough and reduce their spend in London for the 2012 Games. The knock on will, of course, mean that we, the British Tax Payers, will be expected to pick up any shortfall in projected income.  ...... But then I think we were rather expecting that anyway. Just an attempt at a bit of blackmail to the current organisers I'd say:

Even so, frustrated sponsors have been pushing Olympics officials to remedy the situation, warning that it could result in sponsors being reluctant to pony up money again for the London Games.

True but the rider would look pretty fvcking stupid trying to do it without the horse. Anyway consider this. Princess Anne's daughter had to withdraw from the team because her horse was injured, proof I say that the horse is more important than the rider. After all, if it WERE all down to the rider she could have gone on any old nag. whistle:

It is a team no doubt about it. But most of the riders acknowledge that which is precisely why Zara withdrew when her horse was injured. I could be wrong but I think you have to declare your horse and aren't allowed to change after that.  rubschin:

He (Peter) seems to have married someone called "Autumn" which may well go some way toward explaining the lack of available info on him. http://www.hellomagazine.com/royalty/2008/08/02/peter-autumn-horses/

Wiki as ever has a bit more ~ seems that Master Phillips shuns the limelight. Good for him.

"Peter Mark Andrew Phillips (born 15 November 1977) is the only son of The Princess Anne, The Princess Royal and her first husband, Captain Mark Phillips. He is the eldest grandson and first grandchild of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

Born in 1977, Peter Phillips holds no royal title or style and is currently eleventh in the line of succession to the British Throne. After graduating from university in 2000, he worked for Jaguar followed by WilliamsF1. While working for WilliamsF1 in Canada in 2003, he met Autumn Kelly, whom he married in St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle in 2008. Phillips keeps a low public profile, carrying out no royal duties, and currently works for the Royal Bank of Scotland in Edinburgh."

Now SIXTEEN GOLDS

Quote
Christine Ohuruogu's stunning 400m victory brought Team GB's gold medal haul to 16 as Britain sealed their best Olympic performance for a century.

AND another Silver

Quote
Ohuruogu's win followed a silver medal for high jumper Germaine Mason.

WITH 2 guaranteed Bronzes in the boxing to come ~ they may convert to silver or even gold.

Celebrate the moment London becomes the official Olympic City, and join in with a huge party taking place across the capital.

Southwark is warming up for the 2012 Olympics and will be marking the Olympics handover on Sunday August 24 from 1pm to 5pm. Two large screens will show the official closing ceremony in Beijing, and local residents - and their families and friends – are invited to celebrate the moment London becomes the official Olympic City.

Opening speeches from the Mayor of Southwark and Councillor Robinson will officially welcome the Olympics and Paralympics to Southwark, and pay tribute to Southwark's cultural and sporting diversity as we raise the Olympic flag and begin the countdown to the 2012 Olympics. The Mayor will also unveil Southwark's new portable running track.

 eeek: eeek:

Other events on the day include:

a gymnastic fanfare opening the track

Southwark Community Games athletes representing each community council area
music from local musicians, including African drumming band Kakatsitsi  scared2:

Participants will also have the opportunity to enter prize giveaways on the day, which include £500 of sport vouchers. If you're looking for a fun-filled family day on this bank holiday, come and join us – and get fit and active.

New embossing
Mondo’s new surface embossing is the result of a careful analysis of a number of patterns, including biomimicry (patterns occurring in nature), geometric and technological. The new MondoTrack texture and tessellation pattern (no overlapping shapes or gaps) is the best solution for functionality, performance and comfort.

Optimal traction and greater area of contact
The irregular size and shape of the tessellation pattern has been designed to provide the best traction between the track and shoes spikes and for a greater area of contact than other track systems. This improves athletes’ grip and performance.

Easy to clean
The irregular tessellation design makes the track surface easy to clean.

Efficient water flow in rainy conditions eliminates water pools
The irregular tessellation design, with its highly efficient water drainage channels, eliminates water pools, ensuring optimal traction in all weather conditions for excellent athletic performance and maximum safety.

Harmonious aesthetic design
The irregular tessellation design provides more harmonious aesthetics than recurring or systematic patterns, which can have dissonant or jarring effects.

Curious etymology  rubschin:

Quote
steeple
O.E. stepel (Mercian), stiepel (W.Saxon) "high tower" (related to steap "high, lofty"), from P.Gmc. *staupilaz (see steep (adj.)). Steeplechase first recorded 1793 (earlier steeplehunt, 1772), originally a race with a visible church steeple as a goal. Steeplejack "one who climbs steeples, chimneys, etc. to make repairs" is attested from 1881.

So ~ having just about reached the end the Scots are now saying that they want a Scotland team in future because they have done so well and dislike the rest of the UK sharing in the glory of their medal winners. They seem to have forgotten that GB funded these medal winners for the past several years. Meanwhile the French and Belgians want a Team Euro in future so that Europe can compete against the "Super Sized Nations" like the USA, China and Russia and the Aussies are bitching that some of "Team GB" may have been born elsewhere in the world or that their parents may have come from the Commonwealth.
