Title: And as Nick sets off to the West Country
Post by: Snoopy on August 12, 2008, 07:45:17 AM
heading into what is probably the worst weather seen so far this summer we wish him Bon Voyage and plan our responses to his inevitable tales of woe  point:

Actually I 'spect he is still trying to round up his family and will be here shortly to complain of "faffing".

Poor Nick and family. Not the best of weather to say the least.

Still, should get some good stories out of it.  ;)

And check in is from 3pm onwards I assume. Journey time has to be 4 hours plus.
You hope to visit the Lions at Longleat on route. That tour takes about two hours at least, if you miss out the house, riverboat trip etc.

Have you booked an overnight anywhere en route?  whistle:

Oh well ~ just a five hour drive to Winchester then ~ give my love to King Alfred as you pass him.

I used to cycle out there from Southampton regularly as a boy, just to gaze at his statue, visit the Cathedral and pedal home again. I hate what they have done in the name of progress to the surrounding area.

Mrs Nick is now "looking for things" (and is still in her pyjamas)  ::)

I intend to take them to Avebury en route from Winchester to Longleat

M40/A34

I am utterly relaxed about our departure time as the later we get to my sister's the better as far as I am concerned.(She enjoys talking about illness)

I am going to hear all about her hysterectomy  noooo:

M40/A34 is no better.
In fact A34 through Newbury is the stuff of nightmares for me as I used to commute Southampton - Basingstoke. Then it became Enfield - Southampton every weekend. After that it was Ipswich - Gillingham (Dorset ~ close to Longleat) every other weekend for two and a half years. Trust me when I say I know those roads as well as JOM.

At the present rate of progress we shall be leaving at midnight, so I care not. She wants me to mow the lawn now

Newbury is a doddle since the bypass opened (and Newbury itself is a great place to go since it opened too)

rubschin: Oh yes ~ the infamous Newbury Bypass with Swampy and Co. Ruined miles of good countryside just to try to prove a point.
Sorry JOM but as a "local" I am still feel entitled to say that Newbury is a sh*thole. Always was, always will be.

I am not in favour of the M3 extention and the ruination of the downs around Winchester either, all to get yet more container traffic into Southampton and wreck the city completely.

Newbury is a sh*thole. Always was, always will be.

All the more reason to have a bypass then.

Not at the cost of some very lovely and historic woodlands that can never be replaced and all to knock five minutes off a car journey.

"Are you near yet?"

I had to explain that we hadn't left yet  ::)
Title: Re: And as Nick sets off to the West Country

I take it she was not impressed. You really do need to explain to Mrs Nick that the rest of the country operates to British Summer Time, not, as she seems to think, British Sometime.

Even if you left right now you would not be in Winchester much before 9pm by whichever route you travel.

In your shoes I think I might well have told my sister that we would now be arriving tomorrow then sit back and wait for Mrs Nick to announce her readiness to depart before telling her that the car, with you and the Boy, will be leaving after breakfast in the morning whether she is in it or not.

Have a good hols, Nick.... oops, too late.

I forgot to mention not going in the plunge pool after a sauna; it's freezing. Oh, and the sky walks have dodgy steps ~ very slippery when wet.

Well ~ if he has finally got away he has 275 miles plus to travel, including the M6 and M40. No way will they get to Winchester before 11pm and they were going for tea  eeek:
Mind you ~ I've noticed he does have a fairly "creative" view of speed and distance  whistle:

Slight delay then, A34 closed for resurfacing etc 2200 to 0600 South end of Newbury bypass to Highclere Castle, it's a straightforward diversion

It doesn't go though Newbury any more, there is a bypass.

Not a bad road in fact, unless you get stuck behind a slow vehicle . . whistle:

My dislike of Newbury is longstanding, born originally of many journeys along the old A34. The "new" bypass struck me at the time as an abortion that ruined many acres (or must we now call them hectares?) of fine, traditional woodland and historic countryside. I was and am convinced that, as with the Winchester bypass "improvements", local feelings and a duty of care for a large area of our heritage were overridden by "political considerations" and that someone, somewhere made a shed load of money out of choosing those routes against the alternatives that most people in both areas would have preferred. An astonishing number of "honours" that might have been seen to be connected seemed to be handed out in the years after the events.
My personal interest in both areas stems from ancestral connections and I will admit that I would have much preferred it if things had been left alone.

I can't say I "like" any town particularly, but as Newbury is the nearest large one for us I must confess that shopping there is much easier since the bypass was finished.

The land which was consumed by the bypass construction was of little value other than to ramblers or aesthetes in my opinion.
