Predictably pink!

I have just purchased one of these ~ so that I can "roam". Actually to use when I am doing family research ~ mobile internet connection etc.  whistle: Weighs less than 1kilo f'ing fast and bags of memory for what I want. 'Bout the size of a decent hardback book.

Linux Preloaded ..... No MSoft crap.

Courier delivery awaited as I type ~ I'll let you know when it arrives.

They did look pretty cool. If I didn't actually want it for pc related stuff I would so have gone for one of those.

Must be something in the air (so to speak) in the VP. I'm thinking of getting a new laptop too. IT bods at work have had a look at my present one, can't suss out what's going on. So, I'm going to try a re-install of windows, if that doesn't work, a new laptop beckons

It werks!  whistle:
Cool!

It takes a lot to impress me but I have to say I am impressed with this bit of kit. Linux is a doddle, the system simply started at the touch of a button and even I can find my way round the whole thing without recourse to the handbook. Dinky keyboard would not suit a "touch typist" but since I am a three finger (at best) operator no probs. Boys are tremedously impressed with the built in camera and the sound and picture recording which even an idiot like me can use. Internet wireless connection is simple and works. I have piggybacked on my neighbour's wireless wifi (should I tell him it is not as secure as he thinks) My own wireless set-up rejected me until I had put in the necessary passwords etc.. and then it worked.
I have to go out in a bit and may visit McDonalds later for a coffee ~ just to try out their Wifi Hotspot. whistle:

For those who like an assesment of these things on the "Cool Rating" this is deffo minus 45deg. Which is presumably why they have a little penguin as their logo.

Cooler that Jeremy Clarkson that's for sure, nearly as cool as Steve McQueen and there is nothing cooler than him.

If it runs Linux are files created on it compatible with a PC running Windows?

Yup.

I simple email them to myself or for larger docs I can commit them to a memory stick and transfer them over onto the PC.

Simple solution there Nick, just start fiddling with your current laptop and let the curse of Captain Calmaity take hold. Hey Presto, you need a new laptop to replace the one you've just knackered.

I think it runs OpenOffice which you can tell to create MS Office (Word Excel, etc.) compatible files...

Nah ~ been taking photos of the Scarecrows ~ for judging purposes. Driven bloody miles with SWMBO reminding me every five minutes that we have to get back by 5 so that the boys can go to their swimming lessons.
At 4.20 THW, who had stayed at home, phoned her mother's mobile to say that the swimming coach had called to cancel tonight's session as they don't have enough life guards or something. evil:

Yep ~ It's lovely

It takes a bit of setting up to work on your home wireless network cos of the Linux/MSoft conflict but that was soon sorted. Works well in local McD's WiFi hotspot (well from the carpark actually)
Dinky little keyboard but I lurve the built in WebCam  whistle:
Runs for about 3hours between charges.

It comes with a super charger unit that plugs into US/French style two pin sockets or UK style three pin. Built in adaptor thingy.

When I rebuilt my PC I finally dumped Microsoft Image Composer which I've been using for years and instead downloaded Photoscape for free...

Seems to work really well and does everything I need so far...  cloud9:

TBH I found Netgear a simple plug in and it worked exercise.

Slightly more effort when I came to add in the Linux using Assus but that only took a few minutes.

Best plan is to do nothing. Don't assume you need to do anything and the set-up (at least on Vi$ta ) is automatic. The only other person I know who has had problems with Netgear, read all the instructions, used the installation discs, kept referring to the "trouble shooting " guide and generally made a big deal out of it. When it didn't work came to me, as he knew I had Netgear, and asked for help. I simply pushed the reset button on the Netgear router and suggested we had a cup of tea whilst it reinstalled itself. End of problems.

Tried that. It's always my first go to!

Still it's been returned now and the bt guy gave me the router at 50% off so it is actually an awful lot cheaper than the netgear bollocks.

I confess that the laptops x3 which work off the netgear router all have plug in adaptors (also Netgear) and the PC is connecterd to the router by cable so the probs with the Asus seemed to have been because it came with built in wifi connectivity. That took a little while to manage to recognise the Netgear router. Reset button on the Router sorted the problem. The Asus is now able to pick up three neighbours signals too. I have cracked two passwords the third is causing pause for thought. Why do people use their house names and assume it will be secure?

It makes abig difference if all the wireless devices are of the same make. Although there are standards most manufacturers put their own stuff in and this can make them incompatible.

Because I can piggy-back on their wireless network it only means that I can connect to the internet via their system and not my own. It does not mean I can read what they have on their PCs nor can I see what they are looking at.  ::) They have been told to change their passwords to something more secure.
