I woke up at three this morning unable to think of anything else. Why? I had forgotten about this for nearly half a century  eeek:

So why did they make them in colour? Did they somehow foresee the arrival of YouTube?

Colour TV may not have been invented at the time but colour film had, I'd say that was why it was in colour. At a guess I'd say it was originally intended to be one of those mini cartoons you used to get on a saturday morning matinee.

They were/are being shown regularly on the Nickelodeon Cartoon Channel, under the banner "Nick Classics", after 8pm nightly along with a number of other old favourites.
Perhaps the rays are coming out of the box calling to you Nick  whistle:
