Title: writing discs
Post by: Pastis on September 18, 2008, 02:27:55 PM
I have a customer who's cleverly sent me a CD-R that won't open on my Macs  ::)

My suspicion is that he's written it using the incorrect format on his PC... Live File as opposed to Mastered, possibly  rubschin:

What think the clientele of the The Off Topic? That is, if we can stay on topic for a post or two...

Um.... Possibly, but I'm not sure I could...

You sure it isn't a DVD or something...?

As an aside, I was taken to a preview of the first Apple Lisa (the daddy of the Mac). I think it has an 8MHz 68000 inside, a novel mouse thingy... and was shite.  noooo:

Not much changed there then. (stands back safe distance as Mac/PC debate is re-ignited)

You can certainly save stuff in differing modes and open them too but you would need to know the programme he used to save the data in before you could open it. When I get these, and various people send me stuff for the magazine that they have saved on their PCs or Macs, I used to use the "Let M/Soft identify the programme" option that came up on the screen but it never, ever, found a way to open anything so in the end I just decided to send such discs straight back with a note saying "Please save this in Word Format and resend it to me as I cannot open it". It saves me grief and is quicker, in the end, than struggling with the things.

There are too many non M/soft programmes available and people cannot reasonably expect you to have them all.

This may sound like a stupid question but did your client burn the data to the right side of the disk. I've known people who have had unlabelled disks put it in upside down to burn something and then panic when they cant read it later.

Other than that the only thing I can think of is that they've either managed to somehow corrupt it as it was written or save in the wrong format.

Well two sensible attempts to solve your problem but both come down to telling the client you can't open his disc.

Well, we'll find out tomorrow; there was a pronounced sense of  redface: at his end of the phone when I mentioned that he might have formatted it wrong.  whistle:

He's sent me CDs before and it's always worked fine but I think he's got new kit running Vista or something. I'd ask him to email the files but from previous experience it'll be about 200 - 300MBs of fashion shots in Photoshop .tif files and I don't want to be waiting for downloads 'til kingdom come.

I'd thought of the wrong way up thing as well but to give him his due, he's not that stupid  ;)

Nice clip btw BM... My Macs are a painfully expensive necessity being the industry standard for twenty years of so  cussing:
