Title: Horseradish
Post by: Pastis on September 23, 2008, 04:53:24 PM
rubschin:  What's it got to do with horses then, eh?

I've recently found that a generous dollop into the spud & parsnip mash adds an original piquancy, specially on pies such as Cottage or Shepherd  cloud9:

Other than that, what d'yer do with it?  Other than spicing up a slice of morbidly boring roast beef, obviously.

Goes well with salmon  whistle:

As for why is it called horseradish ~ have you ever seen it pulled from the ground?

If you like horseradish give wasabi a try  cloud9:

I have an enduring memory of wasabi on the quayside at Pusan, S.Korea, trying some sashimi from a fisherwoman stallholder...  thatsit:

To make matters worse, a local fisherman came to the rescue with his family recipe saké ...  eeek:  I have never felt closer to exploding.

Err.... no. Not the sort of thing we do around here, mostly. Is it a bit whiffy?

No. The root which when grated creates the stuff we make into horseradish sauce resembles a horse's dick.
However it was said in jest. There are many theories as to why it has the name. Wiki list several.

Thank you Snoops.

I will amend the wording on tonight's menu...

"Tomato chutney pork Bangers & Spud 'n' Pony Dick mash"

You know, you might have something there...  rubschin:

"Tomato chutney pork Bangers & Spud 'n' Pony Dick mash"

Wasn't "Pony Dick" Snoopys stage name in those 60's films?

On topic, a spec of horseradish on smoked salmon or any cooked tuna dish adds some zest as well.

The turnip is an old vegetable charge in heraldry. It was used by Leonhard von Keutschach, prince-archbishop of Salzburg. The turnip is still the heart shield in the arms of Keutschach am See.

Does it figure in the DS Coat of Arms?

Of course, the Emblem de Swede Rampant is on all local family crests.

It celebrates the rape of the area by King Olaf in 1012 AD.

We are even now training for the Olympic Turnip-putting field event on our 1000 year anniversary.
