9.5 billion to spend, London Olympics is the cry, they even have a special London Logo (which is shite) and the first venue is finished and opened in .............................

The first sporting venue for the London 2012 Olympics has been completed with the end of construction at the Weymouth & Portland Sailing Academy.

What's funny? Not all the events of the last Olympics were held in Beijing.
We should be applauding not sneering.
The £15m complex, which will also host the Paralympics events, was brought in under budget and ahead of schedule.
Well done I say.

Quite so.
We can still lead the world in removing weeds and shopping trolleys from ponds when we put our mind to it.
The wireless referred to it as the "Wild Jurassic Coast of Dorset".
Is the Olympics going to be an 'Its a Knockout' themed event with inflatable dinosaurs chasing cavemen in boats?
I shall certainly watch it if that is the case.

Who is sneering?
It is funny because the Yokels from Dorset have done the job, under budget and well ahead of time whilst in London they are paying out fortunes to get nowhere because they can't stop arguing about whether they should have put the bid in or not.
See recent interviews on TV and Radio by Tessa Jowell http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2008/nov/13/olympic-2012-jowell
I certainly am not sneering and am proud that my fellow West Country Bumpkins have beaten the "capital" yet again.
But it is still funny.
One up for us bumpkins I'd say!

I forgot to mention...
I flew in from the East when I arrived and right over the top of the London 2012 site.
There is loads of activity on the site and the stadium is really taking shape. However, the whole thing is tiny! I imagined that the site covered vast swathes of the East of London but it is actually packed into a very small already developed area...

I am forming a cunning plan rubschin:
Loads of peeps want to stay in Londinium for the Olympiad ... I might let my place out and go on holiday razz:
They get megabucks in Wimbledon for that sort of thing; wonder how much I could market it for? rubschin:
-
Take the year of your birth. Treble it, put a £sign in front and that is the weekly rental (or part thereof)
-
I think the "part thereof" bit may be applicable ... but a bit of shrewd marketing and careful vetting (notwithstanding a mahooosive deposit) and I might be onto a winner eyes:
-
For Wimbledon I gather that the "Top" Players pay thousands for a house with parking.
This would not apply to the Olympics as for security and drug testing reasons the particpants are obliged to pretend to be amateurs and all stay in the accommodation provided so you need to find tenants with impeccable references. Employ a reliable maid/housekeeper to look after both them and the property and advertise for rich Yanks or similar. Best to avoid Arabs as they tend to trash the accommodation.

Yep. With you all the way on that. I'm thinking rich Yanks (English imperative to understand the contract) who want to spend a few weeks in London and "enjoy" the experience. Off road secure parking if they want to hire a car; public transport if they don't. Housekeeper / cleaner available to keep a check on the state of the place spider:
I've actually done a quick web search and there are peeps up and running with this already rubschin:
Might have to build a quick website for marketing ...

The ballot for London 2012 tickets has been branded a farce after more than 250,000 people missed out completely, while others were landed with far too many leaving them struggling to meet the cost.
One man has been left with a giant bill of £11,000 and had to ask for extra credit because he had not expected to win so many seats at next summer's Games.
At the time those applying for tickets were encouraged by Olympic organisers to enter the ballot for as many events as possible to maximise their chances.
To add to the debacle, millions across Britain who have got tickets have had cash debited from their bank accounts - but will have to wait for three weeks to find out what events they will be going to.
Boris Johnson is among the thousands of disappointed people who have missed out completely on London 2012 tickets - even though he is helping to organise the Games.
The Mayor of London said that he was just as 'cheesed off' as the 250,000 other people who look likely to watch next summer's games from their living rooms.
Mr Johnson confirmed today he had got nothing despite bidding for 'quite a few' tickets.
He said: 'I am personally disappointed not to have got any tickets but I shall try again.
Which translates as I'm going to give someone a bollocking and tomorrow there will be tickets arriving for the events I want to attend whistle:

There is immense amounts of work going into planning the Olmpics and the impact it will have on all businesses and services in London.
We have been sent a directive today. Apparently all staff have to put aside some time on a certain date in the next couple of weeks and this is to be Olmpics test day .
The day before and on the test day itself ‘mock’ communications will be issued to provide information about what’s happening in the city, any incidents that arise and transport updates.
They are asking you to use the ' travel tools' available to find out how your usual journey will be affected on 7th August ( the day they are asking you to believe it is ) . Things you should think about:
• Working from a different office so you can carry out site visits without being hindered by the need to cross the Olympic Route Network (ORN).
• If your route into work will be severely affected you might want to try out a different route or mode of transport to avoid the worst of the delays.
• Can you work from home?
• Can you work different hours than usual; for instance, start at 7am and leave at 3pm?
I think I can answer that now don't you Banghead Banghead Banghead

London - The 2012 Olympic Games may be weeks away, but they are already feeling the effects of the European debt crisis.
A long list of austerity measures is being implemented to help the international competition survive in an atmosphere of economic chaos.
Among the biggest changes:
The Olympic torch has been replaced by the Olympic scented candle. "It's much more energy efficient, and it solves the pollution problem caused by sweaty relay runners," an Olympic spokesman said.
Instead of accepting euros or British pounds as payment for tickets and concession items, the event will have its own unit of currency, the Desperanto. "The Olympic Committee believes that when it comes to cash, we should all be speaking the same language."
The opening ceremony's "doves of peace" will be recaptured and added to the Value Meal Menu of the Olympic Village McDonald's. "International cooperation goes down a lot easier when it has a crispy batter fried crust," the spokesman said.
The traditional bronze, silver and gold medals will be replaced by $100, $50, and $25 gift cards, redeemable at any Dick's Sporting Goods outlet. "Give a man a medal, and he's happy for one day. Give a man a gift card, and he could buy some cool fishing tackle," said the spokesman.
Closing ceremonies have been canceled to make room for a new international competition that will extend beyond the games. Called "Synchronized Bankruptcy," the game will use the strength of the world's top weightlifters to prop up the weakest of Europe's economies for as long as possible.
"Competition aside, few things in this world are more compelling than the sight of a 450 pound man in a singlit, with the weight of the world on his shoulders," the spokesman said.
lol:

Forecast is good, so thought I'd take a little stroll up Snowdon next Tuesday to see this torch that's apparently making an appearance at the summit....via the bloody train ffs! eeek:

Sorted now anyway, but thanks so much for all the helpful info.
Apparently the useless flame IS going up on the train next Tuesday at 10:00am, but WILL NOT BE VIEWABLE TO THE PUBLIC.
Don't actually know if I should roll on the floor with laughter or scream at the actual real stupidity and ridiculousnous of the situation.
I really do not believe that someone could have actually made this up. eeek:
The only logical reason I can therefore come to the conclusion of for its non viewable appearance at the summit, is to set that monstocity of a visitor center on fire.
-
The "Flame" being carried by runners to the site of the games (i.e "The Torch Relay") was invented by the Nazis for the 1936 Berlin Games.
I can see no reason why anyone in the UK would want to perpetuate that particular "tradition".

Just coz something was invented/started by the Nazis doesn't automatically mean it's a bad idea. rubschin:

The routes for each day, together with the names of the Torch Bearers, times, accessibility to public view and those times when it would be carried by other means and thus all that would be viewable would be the police escort and accompanying vehicles were all detailed on the official site days ago. A few keystokes would have shown you all you needed to know.
That is not sarcasm but fact ... That you should choose to believe information gained from somebody on a forum rather than check out the official information for yourself is frankly a demonstration of naivety on your part.
You asked why anyone would tell you an untruth about the torch on Snowdon... I merely gave a mildly amusing (to me) possible answer. I could have told you that the information was wrong but why should I? From past experience I know you would not have believed me.
Whether you choose to see what I post as smug sarcasm is a matter for you .... just keep in mind that I was the one that warned you that Classic Car Gate was a wind up long before you set out.
I don't go in for wind-ups, nor do I post gratuitously offensive comments and silly, empty threats. I attempt to moderate with a gentle touch and things that you post which would and have got you thrown out of other forums are generally ignored. Your comings and goings, threats to leave the site or do someone bodily harm are frankly becoming boring.
To be honest chum I don't give a flying fvck whether you post here or not but when you do you'll be treated just the same as everyone else. All I ask is that you stop the silly accusations that I and certain others have some kind of vendetta against you.......TBH you just aren't that important in the scheme of things.
AND That is all I have to say on the matter.

Anyway ~ to get back on topic Woodstock received an "all points bulletin" asking staff to tell students which roads would be closed around the college to allow for the "Relay" to take place. Some of the poor buggers had exams that day and had to plan arrivals and departures around the road closures. A few ended up being stuck in college for over 8 hours to sit a 3 hour examination. No rhyme nor reason to close off the roads for 5 hours for a one hour procession noooo:

Heard about this on the news earlier. Perhaps I'm being daft here but surely when you are putting a team together for the Olympics you use the best athletes available so why ignore the world ranked no1 for someone 50 places below him? rubschin:

Dear Mr P,
I am writing to let you know that the leadership of UNITE union has called for industrial action by bus drivers and engineers. If this goes ahead, it is likely to cause some disruption across the bus network on Friday 22 June and early Saturday 23 June. Night bus services are expected to run as normal tonight (Thursday night / early Friday morning).

Lots of worried businesses etc at the moment though. Turnout so far just not as high as they had hoped ( in fact 30% down on the same time last year ! ) and much as they have been encouraging people not to come into London it looks like they will be trying to reverse that.
Come into town, no traffic, and tickets now available that were previously VIP allocated to all events noooo:

Watched some of the "Eventing" yesterday ~ Got me thinking ~ What an excellent venue that is with superb views over the City from the Cross Country course. Come to that what iconic venues we have supplied for many of the sports. Rowing on the Thames, Beach Volley Ball on Horseguards' Parade, Yachting at Weymouth, Footy at some of the world's best known arenas, Tennis at Wimbledon, Archery at Lords.
No country could possible match them. We have much to be proud of when all's said and done.

BTW ~ Friend of mine who spends most of his nights working on-line to the States tells me that a great many over there are now convinced that James Bond MUST be real 'cos he was with the Queen. Some even think HM ackchooly did the helicopter jump with him! ::)
One comment he passed on was "Why did the Brits ALLOW the Queen to do that? .... The Secret Service would never have let Obama do such a thing"

What a day for GB. I saw a couple of medals being won in the rowing this morning, listened to another being won while driving to the rugby, listened to a 20 minute interview with Bradley Wiggins on the way back, then watched Jessica Ennis win the heptathlon, Greg Rutherford win the long jump, and Mo Farah win the 10,000m
And I see we also won a gold in the velodrome too. Nice to see how they all paid tribute to all those that helped them over the years too. All great stuff

It's a most unfortunate name for a hurdler.
And Bulgarian athlete Vania Stambolova has lived up to her surname at the London Olympics, stumbling over during the heats of the 400-metre hurdles and failing to finish the race.
In a nightmare start to the event, the 28-year-old tripped on the first jump and tumbled onto the track, dashing her hopes of a semi-final berth.

Shame on him for practising his sport from the age of seven
Shame on him for competing internationally from the age of nine
Shame on him for participating in the final of the diving in Beijing 2008 at the age of 14
Shame on him for being the world number one in 2009 at the age of 15 (I suppose that means his career is now in a downward spiral according to some)
Shame on him for his two Commonwealth golds in 2010
And shame on him for getting the bronze last night finishing 12 points behind the gold medal winner where he scored an excellent 90.?? points but the American scored an even better 102.??; a dive that brought a big smile to Tom Daley's face and brought him to his feet too.
What a shameful example of youth and everybody today

Not sure what the internet tv stuff is a reference to whacky115
For me - he is a young lad that appears to have coped admirably with a hell of a lot . He somehow seems to be an easy target for any kind of digs about his sexuality, weight , family etc yet deals with this with dignity and focus.
I was impressed last night by what seemed his genuine delight to have won a bronze medal. In his interview afterwards he was still beaming. That bought a smile to my face and I hope he continues upwards and onwards. But if he decides to chuck it all in tomorrow I wouldn't blame him for that either. Not sure I could cope with having my character dissected daily when I am doing nothing but trying to represent my country in a sport I love.
The rest of the aquatic team don't seem to have come in for such harsh publicity but maybe they are not quite so vulnerable.

This is prolly why I don't venture into the Sports Bar.... redface:
But Tessa Jowell said the whole thing would cost £2.3 Billion way back when the bid was won....
Current estimates of the costs are in the order of £10B to £25B and it could be a great deal more once the costs of security for the abandoned stadia are factored in for years...
Hardly under budget....
Even if it is only £10B, you could have given every man, woman and child in the UK £160 - you could have got a Sky Sports subscription for that or spent is as you wished. A much better feel-good factor IMHO...
And of course, the £10B - £25B that has been spent wasn't sitting in the bank gathering dust - the country has borrowed that lot to pay for it... we'll be paying it back waaaaayy after the whole circus has moved on to Brazil and prolly several more after that....

Touchy subject and don't want to say the wrong things.
Generally speaking, I'm all a bit confuslicated about it.
Half of me is in full admiration, the other half is feeling slightly uncomfy, and I REALLY don't know why, even though I have spent some considerable time pondering and wondering what's making me feel this way.
I just need a bit of help and discussion to help me make me mind up and understand what it is that I AM actually feeling tbqh. confused:
-
Tbh I think it is perfectly natural for some of it to make uncomfortable viewing .
The PC brigade would have you not notice the differences , not find anything amusing or shocking etc .
The reality is much of the hype is about inclusivity , about 'enabling' these individuals to lead relatively normal lives but to anyone watching it is clearly evident that the obstacles that these people have overcome are just massive and always will be. Whatever ailments we have we by and large hope to recover and we do take so much for granted.
Watching these individuals live with and overcome their particular issues and compete with pride and honour is humbling. It was tragic to look at potentially so many 'disfigured' athletes last night that sustained their injuries through war or were born with certain conditions and yet were embracing the life they had .
We moan , we grumble, we whinge but for me it adds a perspective . Makes me aware of my own selfishness albeit for however limited a time that might be redface: and that I am lucky even though most of the time that is the last thing I would claim to be redface: redface: redface:
I watched Clare Balding interview Martine Wright - the lady that lost her legs in the 7/7 bombings just before she was about to enter the stadium last night and she talked of this being her 'destiny' - she then said " Fate is what happened to you - destiny is what you do with it " . Many will scoff at the inevitable cliches that will be uttered but some of this will strike home as that did with me.
-
Alternately, I watched an interview with a British table tennis player. She has 'intellectual disability' or, as she put it, trouble learning at school. OK, I understand that she meets the criteria to allow her in but to be honest I cannot see that being a bit slow in the brain department has any effect on playing table tennis.
After the Spanish basketball team were caught cheating at the Sydney Paralympics, 'Intellectually Disabled' was left out until now. I still think that this disablity is open to abuse.

I determined not to watch any of it as it makes me uncomfortable ..... Frankly I just can't take the sight of other people's unfortunate lack of limbs, whether caused by accident, war or at birth. It just makes me queasy. There were, of course, plenty of limbless ex-servicemen about when I was a lad and I was raised on the "Don't stare at the man" method so perhaps that's why I feel uneasy watching them now. I dunno.
As for the "Educationally Challenged" ping-pong player ..... Like Uncle I can't help feeling that an inability to sit in a class and learn is hardly "disablement" ..... in my day she would have been thrashed and told to pay attention. There is nothing physically wrong with her and if she is that good at ping-pong she should have entered the real Olympics.
I do admire the courage of those who have overcome, albeit to a limited degree, their disability but watching them is a bit too voyeuristic for me. My biggest dread whilst waiting for the birth of each of my five children was "What if there is something wrong with it? How will I cope?".... They tell me it is different if the disabled child is your own but I was never sure I would manage and thankfully I have never had to put it to the test.
Dunno if this is the sort of comment you wanted or even if it will help you sort out your own feelings about it but that's the way I feel about it and there is nothing I can do to change the way I feel .... although I have been very careful not to spread my feelings about it all to my kids and they have been quite happy watching the TV coverage, tho' I must admit the boys do make some pretty sick jokes about it at times E.G. They have renamed the legless swimming events "The bobbing about like corks race".
I suppose when it comes down to it we all fight to hang onto life and if you get your leg blown off you either fight back or go under. Fighting back is certainly better than just feeling sorry for yourself and the disabled Olympians do make me feel more than a bit ashamed when I see what they can do and still I moan about my own minor (by comparison) health problems.
Basically I guess I'm really saying "There but for the Grace of God" etc
-
Mobility scooter racing you say? rubschin:
I'd pay to watch that
-
I did like the comment by Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson on TV last evening when she said "We are either Olympians or Scroungers .... perhaps these games will help change opinions"
-
You could have chicanes and pedestrians to
maim avoid
-
My feelings run thus; the fine doctor who started this at Stoke Mandeville seemed driven to help those injured come to terms with their new circumstances, to make the best of their situation and, through exercise and competitive sport return to as much health and fitness as was possible. The games were and are for them; it really isn't much of a spectator sport unless you're in the friends or family category and it certainly isn't for me.
Unless you have some personal involvement I think it's quite normal to feel that degree of discomfort watching someone with a disability trying to achieve anything... even getting on or off a bus.
Quite by chance I'd booked tickets to a completely different event last night so missed the whole thing on TV.

In serious mode now, I thank you for your comments, as they've been most helpful in coming to terms with the confused state I've felt in over these games.
Half of me has wanted to laugh at them and the seemingly...and I stress SEEMINGLY... idiocy and sick hilarity of it all, thus making me feel so uncomfortable wretched and extremelly guilty, and the other half is one of feeling so humble, astonished and proud of them for getting to grips with their disabilties and getting on with life.
Almost feel like weeping with all the confused feelings I've got about this tbh. Most odd.

As a kid, due to chronic asthma I went to an “open air” school where looking back, a lot of the focus was on helping people combat there specific illnesses and disabilities. I suppose you could say I was on of the lucky ones, I had trouble breathing, but at least I wasn’t missing limbs, wasn’t blind, wasn’t deaf, or like one little girl who was blind, deaf and in a wheelchair due to her having no use of her legs, but she was always smiling. It was rare to see any of these kids moan, feel sorry for themselves, they got on with life, they did the best they could, they were determined to beat their disability as best they could and would often refuse help from those of us who were more able-bodied
I’m sure many of the paralympians will have the same approach to their own lives and their disability, be it something they had from birth, or from an accident or in some conflict or other. Initially they want to prove that they can beat the disability but once that is achieved, they find they enjoy it, they find they are good at something, and so it becomes a bigger challenge, and they want to go further and further
So, I will be watching as much of it as time allows but as I don’t know any of the “big name” paralympians I won’t be going out of my way to watch some of the events like i did with the Olympics

I see there is much furore around the fact that the adverts are interrupting coverage on Channel 4 and 'spoiling' the viewing for some.
In all honesty what did people expect .....this is not a replica of the 'main' Olympics that was broadcast on the beeb and had red buttons galore to cover your every sporting need. This is one of the difficulties in that people expect the same . Apparently the beeb wanted to cover the Paralympics as well but LOCOGG made the decision to offer it to Channel 4.
I do think perhaps that there is an opportunity to appease some people by timing the adverts differently on Channel 4 and E4 / More 4 etc so if someone wanted to continue to watch all they had to do is flick channels. As it stands at the moment they all coincide. But this sheer inconvenience I would imagine would still deter many and it just makes me laugh that they can be up in arms about this ( intentional pun sorry redface: ) when considering the subject material !!!

That's one problem I have with 'disability'. A sense that you can't make a legitimate complaint because it's a sensitive subject. If the adverts are spoiling your viewing then why shouldn't you complain?

What a bad loser Oscar Pistorius was, he reckons he lost because the Brazilian guy had longer legs/blades. If Pistorius had of run as fast as he did in his heat where he broke the world record he'd have won noooo:
-
Pistorius was convinced that the running blades Oliveira was using were too long, and called for the International Paralympic Committee to investigate. This from a man who has had to fight long and hard to overturn doubts about whether or not he himself has an unfair advantage when he is competing against non-disabled runners.
The twist in the story is that it is the very fact Pistorius wants to run in the Olympics and other able-bodied competitions that cost him here.
To do crossover like that, he can only run on blades that have been cleared for use by the IAAF, the sport's governing body. Longer blades, of the kind Oliveira used, are only legal in Paralympic events.
If Pistorius switched, he would not be able to run in non-disabled competitions. Besides which, he would undermine his own argument that his success is about the body above the knee, rather than the technology below it. In a sense, he is a victim of his own ambition.
Sets up an interesting scenario for the 100 and 400 m races yet to be run whistle:

Ellie Simmonds did it again. A second gold, and another world record... and the other GB lass got bronze, missing out on Silver by 1/100th of a second

In the equestrian events, shouldn't it be the horse that's disabled? rubschin:

One of them was definitely lame today, I made the same remark to meself like
(From somebody who's seen a few three legged donkeys in his time. Shame I didn't realise they were until I saw them racing) ;)

That's 31 gold, 38 silver and 38 bronze now, a total of 107 medals. We won 103 medals in Beijing, 42 of those were gold, but the target was to beat the total of 102 medals, so mission accomplished, and still two days to go
