For those of us lucky enough to be employed, how do you see your future? Safe or dodgy?
I THINK my Swamp experience is looking quite healthy, as more people are seemingly looking for days out more than holidays abroad. Sales up by over 600% this crimbo so far. eeek:
Even my full time job appears to be doing ok too, with folk opting for 2nd hand motors instead of new.
Think it's been simply a case of me being lucky to be in the right sectors at this time though tbh, and for that I'm very grateful.
-
I think next year will get even more shiter than this... There'll be millions on the dole by this time next year...
-
Strangely Mrs S#2 is finding she has more work being offered than she wants and more people are approaching me to do things for them too. It seem the "Cash economy" and "Leisure activities" are not suffering the economic down-turn so beloved of the press.
Like you Mr G we are finding multi income streams are the best way through the country's woes. ~ But then I have been preaching that mantra for some time now, although many will not listen.

Seriously ~ will that bother you in Cyprus? I appreciate that your pension is taking a hit at the moment but by the time you qualify for that things will have turned the corner and you'll be OK again.
-
My mate (yes, I do have one so there), him with the new Maserati is broadly in the antiques business and is rushed off his feet at the moment.
I don't think things will affect us too much In cyprus... We'll keep our heads down for a few years before selling up the house and downsizing... live off the proceeds like... hopefully like...
-
More or less my plan ~ assuming I'm spared that is. My small pension is index linked, the property is too large and one we have shed a child or two we will downsize. Meanwhile there are plenty of cash jobs to be done and, unless the country runs out of children Mrs S #2 will be employed to teach them. We don't actually foresee too many problems for ourselves. How the children will fare in later life is another problem but then I've managed through various recessions etc over the last 61 years so I expect they will too,

What a topic! Nail / Head Mr G.
It's going to be tougher than tough this next year. I'm adjusting two of my three current income streams at the moment because the commercial climate is changing. Those who have money will continue to spend it and get better value (you're in my sights, my friends eyes:). Cash will remain King and those who trade in that side of the economy will perhaps weather the impending storm. Certain friends have cashed in their ISA savings and opted for Blue Chip investments which appear to offer more interest at this time.
Over twenty years of being outside the salary-man circuit have taught me many things ~ first and foremost, be prepared to change, be prepared for change too! I fear it's going to become uglier out there evil:
-
Unlike you guys I have no business and maybe that's a good thing, maybe that's a bad thing. My one source of income is my salary. Fortunately, my line of business is maintaining, not constructing
On the flip-side, we see MFI closing, The Pier closing, Woolies closing and Christ knows how many others closing. I really do feel for these people. We were shopping in town earlier today and Mrs JOM said "let's nip in Woolies and see if we can get any Quality Street, they'll be cheaper". I did feel a bit mercenary, but not too much redface:, and we were served by a young lass who was the model of politeness and all smiles, not your usual shop assistant as Barman has noticed. I really felt for the poor love, I hope she and all others of a similar ilk get what they deserve in the future. I really do count my blessings
-
The problem that myself and Tel have is that we are classed as "over-qualified" for the sort of jobs that would probably pay the money we were used to.
i.e. the employers know that they can either:-
a) pay us less
b) don't like the fact that we would probably show them up, thus discount us for self-preservation reasons, or
c) ignore us entirely
d) all of the above.
My money is on d)
Ah well, self employment looms large cloud9:
-
Mr Wench and I are pretty safe. As Snoops pointed out there will always be children who need teaching and I work for a man who views his small company as family so I don't forsee any problems there either.
-
Shipping rates have plummeted in the past few months. For the same bit of business we now earn less than 10% of what it was mid year. Not good noooo:

The industry always has boom and bust cycles, this one is a bit deeper. The good thing for me is that the brokers are the first to be laid off and we haven't got to that stage yet.
-
I think this will be the worst in our lifetimes... for the UK anyway.... Banghead
-
I'm going on a day by day basis these days. I'm currently working full time hours in a 4 day week so I'm already planning on getting a second job both for extra cash and in case I do end up being made redundant.
-
I leechof the public sector and have contracts through to 2012 (though not a huge amount pa). As things get tighter the education sector will get squeezed. We have property as investments. Shite at present, but what else is there?

Can't even fall back on doing a bit of bar work now as pubs are apparently closing at an alarming rate.
I can only think of a few relatively safe industries to be in tbh. Service and maintenance, food and funeral parlours.
Growler jnr 's ambitions to join the motor trade have all but dissappeared now, cloud9: and am currently pursuading him to join one of the big supermarket chains, Aldi/Lidl being the favourite presently.
Yes, the current plummeting of the economic market has had one positive note be grateful for then I suppose.

We sell printer software for bill printing. I think we will be fine too.

Going into mega boost turbocharged overdrive very shortly in fact! lol:

What a way for some to enter into Christmas. Both Officers Club and Zavvi have been added to the list of High Street stores that have called in the administrators this morning
-
Zavvi suprises me. They only opened their local branch recently!
-
Surprised me too. Apparently, it's fall-out from Woolies. One arm of Wollies was the main supplier to Zavvi, when Woolies went bust, Zavvi had to source from elsewhere but the price was obviously higher, the rest as they say, is history
-
Ahhhh, that makes sense then I suppose. Was only a matter of time in that case. I went into Woolies yesterday. My god what a depressing experience that was.
-

I went into mine as I was passing this morning; the place had been almost stripped bare but still with quite a few people in. They'ed moved all the tills to a line by the window and people were queueing like the post office. eeek:

They did that post office queuy thing in Marks and Sparks this morning... speaking as somebody that always chooses the wrong queue it prolly saved me hours... cloud9:

Joining the thread late, I am hopeful that eating will remain fashionable.
Bio-fuel plans are postponed for now.

I'm doing my bit Darwin. Finally found the Rennies cry:
-
It is important as a business to keep your borrowings in check.
Keep to your launch budget and look to grow the business steadily. There are many good business ideas that fail not because their idea is poor but because they have hefty overheads, high borrowings and real cash flow issues.
Source aol money news
I'm currently in this sort of predicament.
Stay as I am with no extra costs, or spend a bit to try and expand. Everything is so damned risky at the moment, I really don't know what to do for the best. confused:
Fortunately, my overheads are really low. No ongoing rent or premises with all the usual 'add ons' that go with that to worry about, so for that I am exceedingly grateful, PLUS Swamp 2 is more of a hobby than a real job tbh. cloud9:
-
I'm in the process of adding an income stream as one of my two current sources of income is bound to be hit soon. Keep the overheads and borrowings low.

rubschin: "Administrators called in"
And just who are these admimistrators? ~ Why they are the accountants who let the fvcking businesses go down the pan in the first place. Banghead

We could of course have a new pub game here. rubschin:
Name the top ten stores that'll go to the wall by the end of January?

For many it could hardly be any worse but for others I fear it will get much worse before it gets any better.
