Welcome to an all new VP super contest. Like previous VP super quizzes and contests it's possibly in poor taste but when has that stopped us?
The contention is that according to various economic pundits several High Street names, businesses, franchises whatever, will go to the wall by the end of January...
... and this is where you all can pitch in!
1. Each player can submit 6 companies that they think will call in the Administrators by the end of January
2. The announcement of liquidation, administrators being called must appear in the UK press prior to midnight on the 31st January.
3. Players can hold like companies as other players but the companies must have a UK presence.
4. The winner will be the player that holds the most Co. collapses. In the event of a tie, numbers of employees put out of work will count; the higher the winner.
Play will start at midnight on December 31st and last for one month... get cracking!
-
And the prize is...? rubschin:
-
Yes, of course there'll be a prize... or several even eeek:
One of which will be the opportunity to host the February competition cloud9:

Wyevale Garden Centres

Also you could perm any three from five Estate Agents chains (The local independants will prolly survive)
I would like to say Harrods but I expect the Banks who virtually own it anyway will be reluctant to pull the plug just yet.
It would not surprise me to see Ryan Air slip below the waves either.
-
Yes, builders as a UK business count, so keep Crest Nicholson.
I wouldn't be surprised if Estate Agents prune heavily first; I don't see how they benefit from economies of scale like retailers. Retailer Morgan's gone; they got rid of all their UK stores back in March apparently so wouldn't have counted anyway.
I didn't realise Outfit were part of Arcadia; other parts of it may go as well eeek:

2 threads?
-
Why not? We have two threads for the departed ~ one for those whose ages appear on the bingo cards and another for "friends" lost. No-one had selected WW as a likely candidate for bankruptcy so it's legitimate to post them in the Commons as going under ~ after all those who own any pieces of their wares might well find it to be an appreciating asset now.

It is also closing its Thomas Burberry line in Spain, with the loss of about 250 jobs there.

Actually it is quiet poignant for me. My dad left school in 1938 (aged 14) and was apprenticed to Barratts as a trainee shoe salesman. Yes a real apprenticeship in retail for three years. In 1939 he was still with them and a member of the Home Guard until his call up, at the end of his apprenticeship, in 1941. He then returned to Barratts as a shop manager in 1961 until the last ten years of his life when he worked for the John Lewis Partnership.
Mrs S#2 was a manager of a Barratts shop in Oxford Street after moving back to London following her divorce.

JJB Sports firms shed 438 staff
JJB has been in protracted negotiations with its creditor banks
The administrators of two fashion and footwear firms owned by JJB Sports - the OSC and Qube chains - are cutting 438 jobs.
The redundancies are a result of the closure of 37 of the 64 OSC stores and eight of the 13 Qube stores.
JJB applied to put the subsidiaries into administration last week after failing to find buyers for them.
It is also considering the sale of its gym business, JJB Fitness Clubs, which operates more than 50 sites.
There won't be much left of JJB before long; being pruned back to nuffink!

He did indeed; what irony... but of course the Yanks don't do irony. I think you're right re over-rated and in fact over-sold. Whilst exercise is vital the rush for binge-fitness is quite misguided and some of the instructors haven't a fecking clue. I know this first hand, sadly.
I suspect the number of health club memberships in the square mile will be dropping like a stone too.

Oh no poor Mrs Nick - very worrying times noooo:
As you know we are in the same process- there has been a very supportive message sent to managers this morning asking them to speak to their teams and convey the following message:-
Over the next couple of years the council needs to save around £30million to adjust to the new economic climate....as part of this we need to be honest and say that up to 400 colleagues will be leaving the council. There will be compulsory redundancies. The majority of these will be where there are comparitively low levels of performance or our priorities have changed. Some very tough choices will need to be made and prolonging the status quo just isn't an option

Southampton City Council administer a population of 231200 according to latest available figures (2007)
Denbighshire County Council administer a population of 97000 according to latest available figures (2007)
Southampton City Council say they employ some 20,000 staff across all departments (I expect there may be some areas that devolve to Hampshire county Council for administration)
Denbighshire County Council tells me that they employ 23,000 staff (this does not include anyone employed by town councils within the county)
I obtained these figures a few months ago for a planned article in the local magazine about value for money/council tax etc but having got the numbers my theory that Southampton and Denbighshire had roughly similar populations and responsibilities was not accurate enough to use them so I went about the article from a different direction.
The reason for quoting them here is to show the size of council staffing by comparison with population and to put into perspective the number of redundancies mentioned by Miss D. Frankly 400 from a local authority payroll is a very small number of people and not something that would concern me overmuch if I were employed by that particular council.
It is, of course, indicative of opportunistic pruning that can be blamed on "external pressures" rather than admitting that they have allowed some dead wood to be carried by local tax payers for too long.

Bradford & Bingley – mortgage book worth £50 billion
Royal Bank of Scotland – 75% of voting shares
Lloyds Banking Group (including HBOS)– up to 77% of voting shares
HSBC, Barclays, Abbey National and Nationwide are the main high street institutions still in private hands
My Notes: Don't forget that HSBC used to be the Midland Bank that includes First Direct and is now part of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation ~ they have serious bad debt troubles of their own that can only get worse as the Chinese economy, based mainly on exports to the US and Europe which are drying up faster than the Sahara, sinks toward bankruptcy. Abbey National is own wholly by Bank Santander, a Spanish bank that also owns GE Money another large sub-prime mortgage company with major problems in the UK. Bank Santander have been agressively aquisitive in recent years but the Spanish economy is a basket case as property values drop through the floor and people rush to get out. The writer seems to have conveniently forgotten the Co-operative Bank to which organisation the Labour Party owes many millions in overdraft facilities. I am not sure why the writer in the Times failed to mention the facts I have added in red, nor am I sure quite what the writer means by "In Private Hands" ~ there is no such thing in banking as what we as taxpayers don't now own we surely do own as shareholders via our pension plans etc.
How yesterday's Lloyds deal hands us the keys to British business
Both Lloyds and HBOS have been very acquisitive in private equity investment over the past decade, entering into partnerships which mean they part-own – or rather, we do – a string of household names.
They include: House of Fraser, department stores McCarthy & Stone, housebuilder HSS Hire, tool hire chain Vue, cinema chain Crest Nicholson, housebuilder Alternative Hotel Group MacDonald Hotels David Lloyd Leisure, fitness clubs American Golf, sports goods St Tropez, beauty products Robinia, specialist care homes Leasedrive Velo, car fleet hire Kidsunlimited, day nurseries British Salt, salt products producer Snell & Wilcox, broadcasting technology GVA Grimley, property consultant
And let us not forget that the Royal Bank of Scotland includes Nat West Bank that among other things also owns DP Dance's favourite bank Coutts

Yesterday, they were reporting that Setanta are believed to be in trouble. They are refusing to accept new customers. It is reported that they owe Scottish football clubs £3 million, and they are due to pay the English FA £20 million next week. I think FA is coming the FA's way

Most of these companies are based on debt and capital investment owners who were looking for a quick profit. They got caught and are now paying the price - unfortunately the employees come off worse.
My old company went into under in December and have been totally abandoned by their German owners (also in admin). Provisions (24M) made in Germany (6000 employees) for payouts/compensation but nothing for the UK.
Allianz to blame for this - again looking to make a fast buck and have instead got totally burned.

I believe that German industrial law on redundancy/lay-off is very strong and forces employers to keep a pot with enough to pay them off.

Der!! The reason the high street is f**ked is because of the supermarket and the out of town retail parks. People stopped using the high street because it was easier to shop under one roof, and now the only shops that are able to take high street locations are the subsidised charity shops, takeaways and gastro pubs. Gone are the greengrocers, butchers etc. who not only gave good service but supplied locally scourced goods. Now people don't want good service and they will buy any old crap from anywhere in the world as long as it is cheap. The supermarkets and big chains supply that. A good example is the furniture shop that sells crap furniture, imported from China and give you four years to pay for it. You are buying a finance deal, not good quality furniture. Banghead Banghead Banghead Banghead Banghead Banghead Banghead

Nobody forced people to use out-of-town retail parks - if they were shite nobody would.
I'd suggest the reason 'out-of-town' shopping is so popular is that 'in town' shopping became shite. You couldn't park or if you could park it was expensive... Dirty, smelly chav-filled places with charidee collectors sticking their tins under your nose every few feet....
-
Also , if the High Street shops were truly independant and different then more would be utilised. Although supermarkets are massive conglomerates most shops on the High Street these days are just smaller versions.

They are now because they are dead, but years ago, before the out of towners, they used to be bustling places, the heart of the town. Yes, the councils f**ked up by charging stupidly for parking and it gave the out of towners the foothold they needed.
You tell me which out of town/supermarket you can go for good advice, quality and service. They are all staffed by sullen teenagers, who know nothing and are paid peanuts to keep costs down, due to the fact that these huge places cost so much to run that the owners have a choice-stock or quality staff. 20,000 square foot units take a lot of stocking and if you have 100+ of them it tells you why now the big boys are struggling. Now is the time to re-launch the high streets, the big boys have got too big and are having to sub-let to other retailers to cut costs.

As I said, people had a choice and they've voted...
Blame the council for the car park charges, blame the landlords for charging too much rent... blame whoever you like...
Given the choice people (me included) prefer to drive there, park for free, buy their stuff, wheel the trolley back to the car and drive off...

Life is too short for shopping ~ I get it delivered. OK it costs £3 or so per delivery but I save that in fuel.
Do the sums ~ My home to nearest ASDA is 5 miles each way. 2 x litres of diesel costs £2.80.
It's a no brainer as far as I am concerned.
Yes I would use local shops in the High Street if any still existed but for what? I cannot buy a suit locally. I'd need to go to Manchester or Liverpool so I get mine from a tailor in Hong Kong (he has my measurements and I simply order the cloth I want). Two weeks and I have a made to measure suit for around £250. Shirts come from Jermyn Street by post. Jeans come from Peter Christian by courier, Books from Amazon by post, stationery comes from wholesalers in Dorset by free courier (I fell out with Viking Direct) Wine and beer are also delivered to the door. Haven't bought any shoes in years and probably won't ever need to again. Local cobbler does repairs as necessary but that is hardly shopping.
I have no need nor desire to fight my way round shops.
Farmers and Local Markets we do use when abroad or on holiday in Dorset but they do not exist in North Wales ... Nearest is a 40 mile round trip and involves park & ride to reach it.
And if we are harking back to days of yore ~ well the butchers, bakers, fishmongers etc used to deliver when I wuz a nipper so really I am only doing what me Mum did except she used to telephone her order in and a boy would appear on a bike with it. I use the www and a van arrives with the groceries. Shrugs:
If the wimmin want to trudge round shops trying on clothes and hats let 'em if it makes them happy ~ just don't ask me to go.

On reflection I'm surprised with all that is going on in Greece that their army haven't stepped in and taken over.
It could still happen ..... again.
As for Merkel ~ surely she must see that Germany's attempts to rule Europe have failed twice before and trying to do it via finance instead of arms is also going to fail. Have to hand it to the Krauts tho' ~ they never give up on an ambition!
The only good thing Gordon Brown ever did was to keep us out of the Euro ~ even if his only motive was to oppose Tony Blair.

Yes, we stopped shopping there when the local Papas opened... so we don't have any Bonus card points in the scheme either (we cashed-up when they changed schemes and didn't get the new card)...
They turned the local pool shop here into a Chillys (opens this weekend) but there is no parking and Papas is just down the road so I don't hold out much hope for them - unless they are really cheap...
As for Pafos Mall - I was told that was 'definitely' going to be Tesco when they were building it - I was quite disappointed when it wasn't... I can't see them opening one store here tho - they'd have to come big style like Lidl or not....

I can't see streaming being able to make up the shortfall especially as they completely bollixed up the service roll out which meant that a large portion of the expected number who would sign up to watch the Mandalorian have ended up getting 'less than legitimate' access instead.

It's looking even more dire for Disney. They are losing an estimated $30 million a day, have furloughed 42,000 staff at Disneyworld alone and increased their borrowing by at least another $5 billion. Even if they are able to get the parks back open this year assuming that an extended period with no usage and minimal maintenance isn't going to cause technical issues with the rides I can't see them getting anywhere near the same amount of income from visitors. noooo:

$48 billion in debt before Corona, their stock price dropping almost 40% in a month and now Disney has just had to raise $6 billion by way of a debt offering. The House of Mouse may soon be totally buggered... noooo:

They don't seem to have had much difficulty raising that cash though and their share price has held up better than other hospitality companies
I'm not saying invest in Disney but with their strong streaming capabilities don't bet on their downfall
Even if they are able to get the parks back open this year assuming that an extended period with no usage and minimal maintenance isn't going to cause technical issues with the rides I can't see them getting anywhere near the same amount of income from visitors. noooo:
Nah
Their share price is holding up better than many https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/DIS?p=DIS&.tsrc=fin-srch and capitalised to nearly $200B they will ride this out (pun?)
The big company to look for maybe going belly up is Boeing. Down 2/3 in a year https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/BA?p=BA&.tsrc=fin-srch noooo:

The page also shows that their shares are overvalued with a potential 15% loss. They look good in the short term but most of the capitalisation they have managed to arrange has to be paid off in a couple of years so mid to long is another matter. Their primary income is from the theme parks and cruises, how many people have cancelled holidays and park visits so that they can use the money to live on instead?

I'm expecting that to be the first of many. The new social distancing measures are going to massively impact pubs, restaurants, theatres and cinemas noooo:

It's sad and hopefully a substantial % survive but there were already too many restaurants here and those two chains were still offering the same proposition with formulaic layouts they'd been offering 20 years before. It was good grub but we can get good grub at home or from the chippy

And that's what's going to happen, prices will rise, trade will slow and we are looking full square at a deep recession across all the developed countries. It's a mess.

It's all a bit sad but Wilko has no real identity other than being a 21st century Woolworths and look what happened to them. They're lost between the Pound Shops, Interweb sellers and the more focussed shops. They were (well for a few hours are) the only bricks and mortar shop that still sells decent 3 ply Kleenex:.

It used to be the one place you could get shampoo without that MIT poison in it, other than that it all looked and smelt silly

True but given the current cost of everything you'd think somewhere that was undercutting prices would be doing well. Going to have to drop into the one in town and stock up on the tea I get from there as the only other place I can get it is Amazon and they charge almost double.

Nah, £2.50 for the tea in Poundland and £5-£5.50 on Amazon.
