Title: What would you have done?
Post by: Uncle Mort on January 16, 2009, 03:26:34 PM
An ATM starts giving out double the amount keyed in.

Would you be honest and report it or pocket the extra? Reportedly some came back for more.

ATM's 'double your money' error  (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/manchester/7833145.stm)

Of course the bank would have records of who made withdrawals during the period in question.  whistle:

I would have looked for the hidden camera - cctv etc, thinking it was a joke / set up

If the bank was open I would probably go in and inform there was a problem. The bank will find out anyway and have a record of all withdrawals made.

If the bank wasn't open I would max out my card and keep the extra money for a certain period of time (at home of course - it earns more interest there lol:). If it wasn't asked for after 6 months I would spend it.

Indeed but strangely their records would only show the amount I had asked to withdraw NOT what the machine actually paid out. Malfunction? ~ Sorry mate it didn't give me extra ~ wish it had etc.  whistle:

But if they had put in £20 notes instead of £10 they would surely have enough  evidence to suggest you had received more than you should have  confused2:

I see in the article it states that legally you're not entitled to benefit from the error, which is much as I thought  cry:

Round here you'd probably get mugged for being a grass, that is if someone overheard you telling the bank  eeek:

This actually happened when I was a student. The five pound note option was giving out tenners. I joined the queue several times  redface: and we were never asked to give it back.

6 hours this machine was churning out the incorrect amount of dosh apparently.
Nationwide are apparently dissapointed no one reported the fault sooner, and are currently trawling through all the transactions made to trace the 'lucky' prospectors.
No one has a legal right to the overpaid amounts they say.

Knowing Nationwide's legal approach and systems (as I do), I would be very surprised if they would try to recover the lost monies. They will simply recover any losses from the agency that last re-filled the ATM. It would be up to that agency to try and recover that loss -  a futile exercise.
