Title: New light bulbs
Post by: Nick on January 25, 2009, 11:36:46 AM
It has just dawned on me that it is virtually impossible to buy proper light bulbs as a result of some blasted EU directive. They are all these frightful 'energy saving' ones. Of which more in a moment.  evil:

As Growler has reported we have a coup-le of chandelier type light fittings here which take candle bulbs. Wehn these go pop we shall, I assume, have to replace them with those stupid things that look like this

 noooo:

Or we could get some of these (we would need 20 in all at any one time)

They are £7.99 EACH!!

And if they break?

Who can we hang?  evil:

What do you mean if?

In your hands it is a certainty.

I shall be on to my stockbroker first thing in the morning to buy Osram shares.

(Seriously, they last for ages compared to fillerment fillymant incondecent old fashioned ones and I have ended my initial crusade against them)

Then resart it DS with immediate effect. I have had to replace two of these "new" bulbs this weekend. One in the entrance hall and one on the landing. Both were installed at the same time less than a year ago when we took the decision to "go green" in an attempt to reduce our electricity bill. The "new" bulbs were, I admit a free gift from British Gas (see posts passim) but they do not get a great deal of use, positioned as described. Had I paid for them I would have been mighty miffed. Meanwhile we await the other 10 bulbs, replaced with freebies at the same time, to fail also. It is worthy of note that my electricity bill has not reduced by a single penny ~ rather it has gone up.
Meanwhile the replacements give better light, making the stairs much safer, are 60 watt old fashioned types purchased yesterday from the local Spar Shop for 49pence each.

Those new bulbs are completely shite (see posts passim)... at least in Cyprus you can buy them with > 20W input power... I understand even our masters ate the EU are reconsidering their decision to ban them now....  ::)

I can only go by my own experience.
It may be a result of our supply being a bit wonky, being at the end of a rather long overhead line, but the old ones used to flicker a lot and rarely lasted a year.
About 3 years ago I got a 'trade pack' of 24 of the new fangled ones very cheaply from a pal, and replaced the old ones as they failed.
So far none (0) of the new ones have gone.
No idea about the running costs though, it is difficult so separate the business and domestic consumption.  whistle:

"Incandescent light bulbs waste 95% of the energy they use as heat. Phasing these out and replacing them with efficient alternatives can help reduce emissions and energy bills.

Surely the heat is not wasted as it's adding to the temperature of the room it's lighting. Granted, only a small addition but the radiators don't have to be on quite so much thus saving on that part of the energy bill.

Or am I missing something?

No you're absolutely right...

In addition, the new bulbs will cost billions in replacement fittings for those which will not accommodate them...

And they can't be used in fridges or microwave ovens, etc.

The whole idea is complete utter shite!

In the hotel at the weekend (I think you know where I mean whistle: ) they had sort of mock mediaeval chandeliers and wall light fittings in the room.
All, yes all were sprouting these compact energy bulbs... no light shades, just bulbs  eeek:

I wish I'd remembered this thread

I wanted a couple of 100w bulbs. Tescos had none. Sainsburys had none, I asked them if they had any, "no". Same at Homebase and B & Q, same answer, "no". I went to Maplins, none on the shelves there, as I'm going out an assistant asks couldn't you find what you wanted". He then says I'll check for you, he went through the catalogue, keyed it in on the PC and said "we've not got any"  Banghead Banghead Banghead. Not one of them said they were being phased out. Meantime I'm clocking on the miles destroying the planet as I go from store to store in my search  cussing:

If I'd known sooner I could have brought some over for you...

They have all sorts here, up to 150W I think...

We also have huge 'low energy' bulbs up to 65W... I have one in my garage which is incredibly bright ~400W equivalent or something....  cloud9:

There's some tremendous offers on the energy efficiency ones at the mo, 99p each or 4 for £1.  The savings are brilliant as due to the lesser light they give out I now have the ceiling fitting and two lamps in the front room alone.

T'least I'm saving the planet...
