Title: Unfulfilled Alternative Careers
Post by: Miss Demeanour on March 13, 2009, 12:03:44 PM
When I was at school I had no clue ' what I wanted to do when I grew up ' . Perhaps when I do finally grow up I may know the answer to this question.

I stumbled into some temp work when doing A levels, some survival work when doing my degree and even when finishing that still wasn't sure what I wanted to do. I envied those that were clearly goal driven and knew exactly what they wanted to do and be. Although I do appreciate that this has it's own pitfalls if unachieved. Still I forged a 'career' as such and have been doing this now for a considerable period of time.

Anyhoo - things as they are in the workplace it is time to think again about new and different jobs  Shrugs:

Do any of you still harbour secret alternative careers ???

Spent my entire working life, after the RAF service, working to be able to afford to go back to work the next day. Never had a career plan, just took the best money I could get. Always wanted to run a pub and did for a while but too little return for the effort involved. Discovered that I had organisational capabilities and an ability to sell and that's what I ended up doing. Too late now for ambitions.

I don't think I regret not having followed a predetermined path and am constantly preaching to my children that the future is all about (i) Being Happy (ii) Have multiple income streams so that if one ends it isn't devastating and (iii) Do not wish for a high income because if you achieve it some b@st@rd will only tax it.
When I think of all the people who saved all their working lives to ensure a decent pension and G Brown has robbed them blind cussing: I am pleased that my first wife's solicitor insisted on my cashing in all savings plans, pensions etc in order that my ex could have her 50%+ when we divorced. Too old to restart many of them and by then having heart problems such insurance as I could find was too expensive so I had nothing left for Gordon to take. razz:

Frankly life is too short for working all hours so if given my time again that would be the thing I would change. No more 14 hours days, no more taking work home at the weekends and no more working for one employer.

Until I was 12 I wanted nothing more than to be an airline pilot. Then suddenly I didn't.

The world is a safer place in consequence

I have never had a career plan. I have always done whatever seemed interesting at the time. That has taken me to University ( a lot and in penury), Mexico (Because it was there), Casablanca (very briefly  noooo:), lecturing, and then, by accident, into what I appear to do nowadays. I don't think I will change course again now. I will just sort of subside gently into the ground in a few years

Well no, not really. I'd like to be doing something. The question is what?

Today I'd like to have been at Cheltenham for the Gold Cup.

I've gone for Madison Du Berlais. Cannot see either Kauto Star or Denman performing well.

I wasn't sure whether to go for that or Exotic Dancer, I went (probably foolishly!) for the latter.
