The theory is that if you buy them with the stalk still attached (only half an inch or so) they will keep for some considerable time thus I would ensure that the stalk is fully removed and place the avocados with some bananas which are know to cause fruit to ripen quickly because of the gas they give off.
Once upon a time Mrs S#2 told me of a method of ripening hard avocados in the microwave but I have just asked her and she cannot now remember the setting or the time involved. (I have a feeling it was on defrost for a minute and then leave overnight but I'm probably wrong)
I guess it depends on when you want to eat them. We have given up buying them as they are always too hard these days, stay that way for weeks whether kept in or out of the fridge and then go straight from rock hard to black mush seemingly overnight. I dunno where one can buy decent avocados any more.

There is a theory that if you put them in a brown paper bag they ripen more quickly; seems strangely arcane and mysterious... I like the banana vapour idea though rubschin:

Stamp on them shrugs:

Prolly do the job ~ I 'spect it is the darkness rather than the brownness inside the bag and a nana or tommytoe should help but make sure you have pulled the stalk out ~ Got that tip from AWT.

noooo: noooo: noooo:
Batter it with a baseball bat in the dark with a bag over it's head....

Stand somewhere dark such as an alleyway or park at night.
When the magistrate releases you, the avocado should be ripe."

This site reckons the microwave does not ripen the avocado but will soften it by cooking it

I will have you know that the Guacamole Freedom Fighters is a very well run and highly organised elite unit. We have a specialist undercover immigration division that is deployed in the act of returning all Avocado's to where they rightfully belong.

All ripened now. 1 took about 2 days, the other 3 took about 5.
I've been polishing up the art of the clean split, removal of the pit and a clean single scoop with a dessert spoon cloud9:
Warm ciabatta with bacon, avocado ... yum, and today with chicken, avocado and bit of mayo ... very tasty!
Thanks for all the tips happy088
Strangely, the ones I bought were technically past their sell by date but in fact just unripe. I think it was about a pound for the four.

My avocados are unripe. And I have run out of bananas redface:
Advice please

Place them in a brown bag with a tomato. It may take a few days.
-
Keep the bag on show; that way you won't forget to check them and it will provide an interesting conversation point should friends drop in. whistle:

Research so far has only extended to a size 6 padded Jiffy bag - which works fine. Why don't you experiment?
-
¬Experiment!! happy088 doh:
I may be some time! eveilgrin:
-
Don't use white bags or plastic ones. The former let light through and the latter will make the avocados "sweat".
A large manila envelope will do the job.
