Pure economics.
Bricks were cheaper to make than stone was to quarry, dress and transport.
Simples!

What I noticed was that many (I'd say 80%) of the old mine chimneys have a bit stuck on the top... like they were finished and extended later...
I could understand one or two perhaps finding that they'd built it too small but not on such a wide scale...
I wondered if it could be a change of fuel (peat to coal?) that would require a large flue across the entire region...? Shrugs:

Perhaps you should have stopped at one of the many mining museums that abound in Cornwall and asked them.
You would have also been able to buy a little pencil with Cornwall printed on the side and a notebook to fill with answers to this and other trivia thus making yourself an invaluable asset to any social gathering.

Indeed...
But then I wouldn't have needed to post here and entertain you with the question would I...?

It was an economic decision BM, the base of the tower and engine house had to be made of granite because of the strength needed but it was too expensive and time consuming to use the stone for the entire chimney stack. When you take into account how easy it was to make bricks back then compared to shaping granite into a usable form for construction the choice was an easy one for the mine owners to make.
