Predictable bollox from NuLabour.

When Old Labour (Harold Wilson) was in charge of our armed forces I found myself issued with a Lee Enfield Rifle with a manufactured date of 1945 on it. I was handed three rounds of ammunition (bullets to youse lot) and told to guard a section of the outer perimeter of an RAF base in what was then Aden.
Every hour, on the hour, the Orderly Officer came round to check that I was (i) still alive and (ii) that I still had 3 rounds. One in the rifle and one in each of the breast pockets of my shirt. The base was regularly attacked by Arab insurgents, often at night. I was very pleased to see the sun come up.

Airfield defence was obviously something we were all trained in and that training included regular sessions on the firing ranges. Wilson's Government cut backs meant that we were permitted to shoot 5 live rounds per year in training. We were literally reduced to shouting BANG!

Spike Milligan wrote something similar about when he joined the army at the start of the Secind World War.

Nothing changes.

I've always thought of Andrew Neil as a bit of a cunt as well.

I think this focus on the number of helicopters is missing the point a bit. Yes it would be handy to have more to ferry troops around but those troops still have to get out and fight. From what I've read many of the recent deaths were in situations where they wouldn't have been using helicopters anyway.

Spot on Uncle. Troops on the ground will always be susceptible to improvised explosive devices and by definition the infantry will spend a great deal of time on the ground. There are however occasions when helicopters could have been used (for instance to transport that Regimental Commander) that would have saved lives. More importantly helicopters can also be used to remove embattled soldiers from a firefight or to bring in reinforcements very quickly and of course to lift casualties quickly to hospital and that is where we are falling down. The weasel words from the Minister about % increases just do not stand up to scrutiny. It is numbers that count. Simply adding in another crew per aircraft would, in theory, increase your flying capability by 100% per helicopter and that is what the Government has done ~ increased the crews and claim to have increased the flying capacity.
The problem is that we do not have enough machines to fly round the clock. They have to be serviced, they have to be refuelled and above all they cannot be in two places at once. The figures are that the Yanks have the same number of men on the ground in Helmand as we do but they are supported by 120 helicopters. We have fewer than twenty operational machines.
I hear what they are saying about it being a joint operation and that one force will help another but I promise you when the shit starts flying you really do want to see your own cavalry coming up the gulch ~ not some death or glory yank who is as likely to shoot you as the enemy.

And of course the Russians were doing 'OK' in Afghanistan until the USA supplied Stinger missiles to the mujahideen. Who's going to supply SAMs to the Taliban I wonder?

They seem to be doing quite well with those they are getting from Iran. Chinese in origin I'm told.

But they haven't shot down a Chinook with 55 troops on board ~ imagine the outcry if that should happen.

Indeed but then the Taliban might think twice if we had a few more of these available

Also, the thing that disgusts me is the way they try and hide behind 'operational reasons' for not revealing how many choppers they have out there... cussing:

You can bet your fucking life that he'd be appearing on every news programme available if they'd ordered new ones and were about to send another thirty out there...

Lying bunch of hypocritical fucking cunts!

Well we know they have 8 Chinooks still sitting at Odiham whilst they try to sort out the computer software that the MOD failed to buy when it bought the bloody Chinooks and then, if anyone cares to pop into W H Smiths and buy Jane's Defence Weekly all the figures will be found therein.
Alternatively have a dig through here: http://www.janes.com/

You can bet your boots that Johnny Taliban subscribes.

Exactly...

And whatever they say, 8,000 troops into 20 Chinooks simply doesn't go... More importantly, the troops themselves are complaining about the lack of choppers..

It infuriates me that they can piss fifty billion plus up the wall to 'save the banking system' but don't have the money to get on the phone to Boeing and other suppliers to order drones, helicopters, armoured vehicles, bullet proof vests and decent fucking boots for the lads!  cussing:

And while the lying bastard tried to imply that we could access all the American helicopters...

Quote from: General Sir Richard Dannatt
Asked why he was flown around Afghanistan in an American helicopter he said it was because he did not have a British one.

"There is a pool and we share the assets, but we have got to put as much into the pool as we take out."

That'll be about twenty then?
