Title: Re-tuning mullarkey
Post by: Pastis on September 28, 2009, 03:49:57 PM
Well?  The Freeview thingy?

Has anyone done it yet?  Should we wait until Wednesday when confronted with a blank screen?  I have a couple of elderly relatives one of whom will probably go apopleptic when she finds she can't get her daytime tv  noooo:

You have to wait until Wednesday.

Freeview TVs and boxes will need to be re-tuned on or after Wednesday 30 September

I gather it's just a matter of pressing the button and the little boxes will retune themselves. Fingers crossed.

Fortunately I have Free Sat in one room and Freeview in the other so the children can be kept at bay like.  whip:

Please also note:

Viewers with a Freeview TV or box need to re-tune from lunchtime onwards

Now, what time does one have lunch?  rubschin:

And if you live "Op North" and don't have lunch which is for "t'Southern Softies as don't 'ave a proper dinner like" ~ What will they do?

This calls for a mass exodus from the workplace clearly. A need to go home and re-tune ~ an HMG order  eveilgrin:

I shall have the telly on while I'm working and wait for it to go haywire or whatever then inform you all  lol:

We have Sky. I assume that is OK?

I am still waiting for the picture on the little black and white TV in the kitchen to come back....

Sky just marches on as before as it is already a digital signal.

You could be waiting some time I fear, DS. Why not print out a picture of the test card and sellotape it to the screen? You could even print it out in colour!  razz:

I have Sky also.  Currently cloudy.

You could put the B&W in the kitchen to good use by wiring it to a CCTV camera trained on the front gate.
Sure to see the b@st@rds coming for you that way. whistle:

On Wednesday 30 September improvements are being made to the Freeview service to pave the way for the digital TV switchover

Not really explaining anything though.

Yes I expect it will be ~ I pity anyone with elderly Aunts and the like who will need to be sorted out ..................... Oh  redface:

Meanwhile it only effects some channels ~ not all will be lost if you don't update immediately.
Basically just go into the menu on the set-top box (even if it sits on a nearby shelf like mine and is not therefore technically a "set-top" anything) and select "Install". Push the OK button, the box will search for new channels, new locations for existing channels and reset itself. Before you know it Robert will become a brother to one of your parents.

The move mainly aims to give more viewers access to Channel Five.

However, those who have Channel Five at the moment will be unable to watch it until they have retuned

The leaflet we have received says
"There are TWO stages to the switchover. The Current signal for BBC two is being switched off after the first switchover to continue to watch BBC Two you will need to retune your set-top box on or after 9th September 2009"

The advice leaflet then goes on to say:
"You will need to retune BBC One, ITV, Channel Four and Five at stage two of the digital switchover on or after 30th September 2009"

Not everyone lives in London sweety whistle:

Well surprise surprise. 12 hours to go before 'rescan time' and a mux frequency has vanished so a load of channels have stopped working. Given the total cock up we saw down here with the digital switchover I'm starting to wonder if the technicians are on secondment from Sky and Virgin

I never knew what channels I got anyway confused:

I have this afternoon retuned sets for two elderly ladies who live in bungalows to the rear of our house and telephone-talked another elderly lady friend of the wife's through retuning her digibox.
