Title: Saint Th?r?se of Lisieux
Post by: Miss Demeanour on October 14, 2009, 08:10:20 AM
I walked past Westminster Cathedral yesterday and saw hundreds of people queueing to get into there....this was most unusual ...what was going on I thought .

Then I see it is about this ....never heard of her  Shrugs:

Th?r?se, a French nun who died of tuberculosis in 1897, aged 24......"She represents love and charity,"....."she shows you how to do the little things with love; how to do things quietly, without anybody noticing."

Th?r?se is traditionally associated with roses ? on sale for ?1 each at the cathedral's entrance ( whatever happened to the charity bit  rubschin: ) These relics have already been seen by 150,000 people during their month-long tour of England and Wales, with 76,000 pilgrims paying homage in six days in the north-west. Westminster Cathedral expects at least that number during their three days here, and has laid on 100,000 candles  and 50,000 pink roses for the saint Catholics know as "the little flower of Jesus".

My manager at Oxfam is a serious god-botherer.

Belief may not do her any harm but the church she is in seems to fcuk her up big style.

I have volunteered to do till duty on Saturday afternoon. But what with me werking like a trojan and the footie being on the radio I may change my mind and stay at home and get pissed whilst making pickled onions. This may mean they have to shut the shop as the safety elf sayeth they must have 2 people in place or the world will end.

God moves in mysterious ways the selfish bastard..

Ah! Charity shop nutters!

They are a breed apart.

They certainly add entertainment to a day in customer facing charity shop hi jinx let me tell you!   cloud9:

Eee! I could start a thread.

But I wont, cos it's a dammed serious business is nuttiness. Unless it's happening to someone else in which case it can be entertaining in a guilty sort of way.

Not for me though obviously. I weep at the plight of maniacs, especially the 'Do you sell mens studs?' bloke who comes in twice a day and scares the shite out of the ladies.

Indeed. Act of god innit.

Just as an aside. Dan Brown has got more money than god.

Fascinatingly enough, Dan is in fact the most donated author to Oxfam shops and I think the second or third most purchased.

Now there is a fact you can wheel out on a social occasion and leave your audience breathless.

It is in fact ear studs the drunken, stinking, boring, ugly, annoying (did I say stinking?) git is after?

About ?1.50 from Oxfam. If we have them in stock like. eyes:

Braces. mens braces. We are asked for these several times a week but none are ever donated.

Is there a worldwide braces shortage that I have missed?

If you have braces (save the teeth jokes) wot you no no longer require send them to me and I can sell them for good money for a good cause.

I'm serious!

Anywhoo ~ Gents Braces, trouser supporting for the use of, are not easy to find these days. John Lewis and a few decent gents outfitters seem to stock them but their popularity has diminished over the years. I always use them to ensure a decent "hang" to a suit. I have 5 pairs in different colours to blend with ties/suit combo but I confess I seldom wear a suit and never a tie these days.
I suspect the reason you get asked for them is that the are damned expensive items but by the same token that would be the reason you don't get many pairs handed in. Those who wear them tend to hang onto them until they're are truly knackered.

I bought a pair a year or so ago from some shop locally ~ ok, they were cheap and Made in China (as is mostly everything now) so I thought if they don't do the job it's only a couple of quid. The traditional style IIRC was leather button holes but these of course have the pressure snap clip onto the material. Of course, being Made in China I've had to extend them to nearly the full length  ::), but they do work. The first time I tried them one of the clips was less than secure and being on almost full stretch I was smartly hit in the jaw as it ascended at great speed from my trousers!  redface:

Ouch  - poor you

Still it would appear you are all bang on trend at the moment as suspenders are back in fashion apparently

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1220073/Return-big-suspenders-Sexy-lingerie-sales-rise-celebrities-join-fashion-revival.html (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1220073/Return-big-suspenders-Sexy-lingerie-sales-rise-celebrities-join-fashion-revival.html)

Stockings and suspenders are back in fashion thanks to stars such as Katy Perry and Dita Von Teese, retailers have reported.

Sales of the sexy lingerie soared by up to a third in recent weeks after both celebrities were seen wearing a pair.

Online underwear store Figleaves is reporting a 35 per cent leap in year-on-year sales of stockings since August.

noooo: Only Americans call them suspenders but then they call suspenders "Garter Belts"  ::)

To a British Gentleman they are and will remain Braces.

Pastis ~ I have had similar problems with the clip on variety. Fortunately I have two suits with the correct buttons so have invested in braces with leather fasteners.

What else is there to say about the Blessed Sister? We have established that you were unaware of the presence of her relics in the UK, that Uncle Mort and others don't "believe" and that no-one who has posted has anything to add in defence of the touring relics or those who queue to see them.

'spose we could just let the thread die and become a relic.

I've always viewed men's braces as an under garment and consequently seldom to be seen. Sock suspenders on the other hand might well appear when crossing one's legs  rubschin:

If I'm going out somewhere that calls for a certain dress code, Sunday Lunch for example, I try to make sure that the braces are discreetly placed so as not to be visible.  ;)
