We did some interviews last week for a temporary member of staff - was not for a member of my team but another in our section. The guy that did the best in the interview I did not like ...I can't put my finger on why ...just an instinct.
He started today , but his line manager is away so I had to do some of the induction stuff. I still remain convinced he is shifty and not trustworthy ...again cannot specify why but I just know he makes me uneasy.
I hope I am proved wrong but are how accurate do you reckon people's initial perceptions are ?

In my interviewing days, SWWTBO was the company personnel manager and interviewing was initially done by her junior and then by her and me (me from an operational point of view). We reckoned that we knew in the first 30 seconds if we were going to offer a job or not. Everything else was pure bullshit. The interview was always process of looking for reasons to say no rather than reasons to say yes.
So yes .... always trust the gut instinct.

Probaby have a photo of Delia on his desk within the week. ::)
Frankly had that come up at interview he would have been shown the door immediately in my day.

I'd go with the gut instinct ~ be on your guard. Much to my embarrassment I've been fooled by a couple of charlatan customers over the years, but then perhaps 2 over 22 years is not a bad record. Both were utterly believable but eventually left me with a cold evil:

Think part of my issue is that he won't look at you when you're talking to him. He is not a young bloke by any means and whether he has an issue with the position he has to take now compared to what he has done in the past is not my problem - needs must and all that

That's it. THAT is the very first thing I look for when I'm talking to someone. rubschin:
If they don't look me in the eye, and I don't give a flying herd of ducks what situation it is, then they are immidiately marked down by me as either devious, two faced, untrustworthy, liar, schemer, scamster, crook or just plain bloody pig thick bad mannered and totally ignorant, or a combination of all of those little gems of human delight. evil:
I've taught all of my nippers to LOOK at people in the eye when talking to anyone like I do.
