Thank god for the volcano erupting (http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/UK-News/Iceland-Volcano-Grounds-UK-Flights-Volcanic-Ash-Sweeps-Into-British-Airspace-Closing-Airports/Article/201004315602425?lpos=UK_News_Carousel_Region_0&lid=ARTICLE_15602425_Iceland_Volcano_Grounds_UK_Flights%3A_Volcanic_Ash_Sweeps_Into_British_Airspace_Closing_Airports) , it's put a stop to the wall to wall coverage of the election
Most of the UK airports have already closed as the dust heads north to south. Guess who's heading up North to Shropshire in a few minutes cry:

Since it was over Manchester, at a height of between 6 and 11 k, at 0800 this morning and was moving south I should think it has long since gone from here. The sun has not stopped shining.

Total shutdown since noon.
Icelandic woman on Beeb news said that the last time this thing erupted, it lasted for 18 months.

And so it begins ::)
People with lung conditions like emphysema and asthma should stay indoors if volcanic ash starts to settle, a spokesman for the World Health Organisation said.
The ash from Iceland's volcano has potential health consequences because some particles may reach deep into the lungs, he said.
"From what we know at the moment, the majority of cloud ash is seven to 10km high up in the atmosphere," said spokesman Dan Epstein.
"Air quality monitoring networks have not yet reported particulate on the ground but, if it does reach the ground, it may have health effects.
"People with existing respiratory conditions such as asthma, emphysema and bronchitis should avoid breathing in these particles. They should have their inhalers and other medication with them."
How many if, buts and maybes can be contained within one statement ? rubschin:
-
Apparently last time this volcano went off it erupted for 18 months eeek: That would fook things up big time, innit?
And the BBC keeps talking about the wind direction being part of the problem. OK, reverse the wind direction and see what that gets you - USA and Canada cut off!

The question is posed in today's Mail on Sunday "Why not simply fly beneath it?" and then they answer the question by saying flying low increases fuel consumption and thus costs. So is it more cost effective to use more fuel and pos carry less passengers (weight ratios and all that) or stay on the deck, buy no fuel but earn nowt?

Anyhoo, my car is covered in a mysterious fine abrasive dust rubschin:
So would that be FEWER fuel then Mr Pedant?
Passengers in this case being a matter of payload. I could just as easily have said freight.
The difference is in the weight of payload v weight of fuel ratios. So less is acceptable I feel.

We normally get quite a bit of fine, wind blow, salt and sand deposit on our cars .... and on the windows of the house TBH but I have just been out back and checked the cars. HMS Albion, which was on its way to Spain to pick up troops, "may be able to be of help", said Mr Brown.
So the RN are using a ship that they happened to have in the area to bring home some 200 soldiers who got stranded in Spain on their way back from Afghanistan.
Meanwhile Gordon has put it about that HE is sending HMS Ark Royal to pick up tourists. Well only if the MOD can spare her, only if her replacement is already in the Med and only if the Spaniards agree to let her dock. It makes some sense when you remember that aircraft carriers are equipped to evacuate troops and thus have loads of spare room and supplies.
Good move on Gordon's part ~ would he have said/done this if there wasn't an election on? ..... Somehow I doubt it.

I heard the rumble of one going over at a quarter to 10 ... reckon it was the first one from Vancouver; very strange after 6 days of peace and quiet.
Have you changed your clocks?
Or are you now in a different time zone?
Nope ;D Deffo 9:45pm 8) 15 mins from here to Heathrow ... by plane, obviously.
I heard it overhead and thought WTF was that! eeek: Then the 10pm news announced the all clear.

Seriously ~ all those years in the bloody RAF and I can't tell one Boeing from another.
Sad innit? .... But I never had any interest in aircraft recognition and it was not something we ever needed to learn.

I'll take your word for it. SWWLTBO is good at aircraft recognition .... or so she claims. I am in no position to judge whether she really knows which is which or if it is just wild guesswork.

Michael Parkinson, a well know "professional" northerner if ever there was one, once said, within my hearing as it happens, that the biggest difference between those from the North and those from the South existed purely in the minds of the Northerners. Having been married for 21 years to a girl from Yorkshire (and thus wed also to her extended Northern family) I have to say that he was right.
There is nothing "soft" about people who were born in the South, nothing easier about living in the South and "Southerners" do not get paid more, do not have more privileges, are not better educated and do not have better lives. NOR, until people from the frozen wastes that exist beyond the Watford Gap, start on with their bloody whining about 'ow 'ard life is oop t'north do we ever even give them a fvcking thought far less bother to stereotype them.
So stick that in thee roll-oop and strike a match! evil:

Quite so.
All these rumours about them being feckless, under-age breeding, benefit-scrounging, thieving, pie-munching, drunken, beligerent degenerates are probably made up as well.

No doubt DS will come on and suggest that the scousers have nicked all the radios, wheels and hub caps off them while they've been parked up for the last week. ::)
