Title: The sound of your own voice
Post by: Miss Demeanour on May 31, 2010, 08:33:06 AM
Do you ever do that thing where you listen to the sound of your own recorded voice ( on a ansa phone or some such thing ) and think it sounds absolutely nothing like what you think you hear when you speak?

Why the great disparity ?

When you pick up the phone to your friends and stuff you recognise them straight away and they sound the same as when you talk to them face to face... rubschin:

It's got something to do with the way your own voice resonates inside your head bones. I think.

I sound exactly like my brother and my late father on the phone. Mother could never tell us apart so in answer to your question ~ No I don't sound any different to the way I think I sound. To me I sound just like me. angel1

When you speak, the vocal folds in your throat vibrate, which causes your skin, skull and oral cavities to also vibrate, and we perceive this as sound. The vibrations mix with the sound waves traveling from your mouth to your eardrum. This tends to gives your voice a deeper, more dignified sound that only you can hear.

Through a loudspeaker or recording device, you pick up sound only through air conduction. The sound we're used to hearing has a lower frequency from the bone vibrations. Many people cringe at the playback sound because our brain struggles to accept that this foreign voice is our own.

Also, you can only speak at the speed that you hear your own voice.

There used to be devices where you spoke into a telephone and your voice could be speeded up or slowed down as you spoke - you would then automatically respond and speak at the same speed (within physical limits) - very amusing.

I dont think we can go that far in your case, but I am sure Grumpy has given a good explanation as to why I sound like Brian Blessed inside my head, and Joe Pasquale outside.
